HALAKHIC CORNER
Q. Are we permitted to participate or watch magic shows? A. The
Torah forbids one to engage in any form of black magic,
divination, astrology, or other similar activity (Vayikra
19:26); rather we are required to have faith in God and allow His
natural order of events to take its course without trying to
intervene in any way. In light of this, the permissibility of
performing modern day magic and optical illusions is subject to
much Halakhic debate. Some suggest that optical illusions which try
to deceive people may indeed fall under the Biblical prohibition
against performing magic (Rambam Sefer Hamitzvot 32) or possibly
Geneivat Da’at/deception (Bach, YD 179). Other authorities,
however, permit one to perform optical illusions and sleight of
hand tricks, as long as there is no intention to mislead people
into believing that one has supernatural powers (Teshuvot Haradvaz
# 1695).
Nevertheless, a number of contemporary Halakhic authorities
permit modern-day magic as an educational and professional pursuit
or as entertainment. Based on the fact that it is known that there
is no true magic today, many authorities dismiss most of the
concerns of the earlier Poskim and permit one to attend a magic
show (Igrot Moshe YD 4:13). It is clear, however, that one must
distance himself from a magician or illusionist who claims to have
supernatural powers. Furthermore, a magician is encouraged to
inform his audience at the start of any presentation that nothing
supernatural will occur during the show.

DAVENING AT HOME Minhagim and Halakhot for Shabbat Parashat
Shemot
January 8 - 15, 2021
By Rabbi Elazar Muskin
During the Covid-19 crisis, please use the following guide
if you are davening without a Minyan.
Friday January 8th
• Recite regular Shacharit with Tachanun.
• At Mincha do not say Tachanun.
• Candles should be lit by 4:43 PM and Mincha by 4:50 PM.
• Shkiah is at 5:01 PM.
• After the Maariv Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and
Elokeinu V’Elokei Avoteinu.
They are only said when davening with a permanent Minyan. It is
customary to recite Vayechulu
together with either another male or female.
Shabbat January 9th – Parashat Shemot
• Shacharit is a regular Shabbat Shacharit.
• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is only recited when davening
with a Minyan.

are only said when davening with

• On Monday recite the longer version of Tachanun just like we
do if we had a Minyan and were
reading the Torah.
• Rabbi Soloveitchik Z”L was of the opinion that when saying
Tachanun even when a Sefer Torah
isn’t present, one should still fall on one’s arm and recite the
opening chapter just like the way we do
when davening inside a Shul.
• On Wednesday afternoon at Mincha, omit Tachanun because Rosh
Chodesh starts on Wednesday at
Maariv.
• On Wednesday, at Maariv remember to insert Ya’aleh V’yavo for
