Answering the call Despite the various services and activities I had to work on this past weekend I made time to take a few Sabbath hours here and there and watch some movies I have been longing to see. Usually when it comes to movies I go for the super heroes or action films. Brian and I always love the summer months because it means the big blockbuster, action-packed, larger than life heroes are coming to the screen and I get to live in an alternate universe for a little while. But this last weekend was different. Friday and Saturday I found myself engaged with some real and fictional heroes but they were heroes just the same. On Friday I watched a fictional movie called, Mary and Martha on HBO. They are both women from the “Western” world, America and England. They both lose their sons to malaria. Their loss inspires them to move beyond their grief and fight for justice that the children of Africa might be spared the same fate. The problem was not “fixed” but Mary and Martha did all they could to save as many lives as they could. On Saturday, Brian and I took a trip to the movie theater. We have been anxious to see “42”. Of course, it is the incredible story of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, the General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. These two men stood together to break down the race barrier in baseball. They too are heroes as they paved the way for many other athletes to enter the sports arena and help many move beyond the color of a person’s skin. Finally, Saturday evening we went further back into history and watched Steven Spielberg's biopic movie about Abraham Lincoln as he was working to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. Lincoln is a great portrayal of this president’s dedication to ensuring America really was the “land of the free”. Again, he was an inspiring hero of his time. These films remind me that whether a person is the President of the United States, an athlete, or “just a mom”, we all have a responsibility to do what we can to change the world and bring God’s kingdom to God’s people. God’s love cannot be shared with people if we do not take it to them. Scripture is full of ordinary people doing extraordinary, heroic acts because they felt so strongly about God’s call on their lives. I pray you will find some way, no matter how small, to be a hero for God’s kingdom. Be a prayer warrior for a friend in need, call your representatives to let them know you care about malaria or another issue, serve at the Welcome Table, volunteer for Recovery at Maryville, teach a Sunday school class or VBS. THE CHURCH BELL Page 3

Thanks from the mission field The people of Pukuka United Methodist Church send their greetings and heartfelt love and appreciation for the generous support from our congregation.

Consecration Sunday was truly exciting. Anticipating a larger crowd than the church could accommodate, they built a pole and tarp shelter for the worship service. Churches from nearby villages came. Several singing groups performed. Bishop Taylor of the Holston Conference preached. Then we all walked over to the church where Bishop Taylor cut the ribbon. People stood shoulder to shoulder and more than filled the room while our bishop conducted the consecration service. Lunch followed, having been cooked over fires in the make shift kitchen under a shade tree. Because we eat with our hands, the hosts always provide hand washing before meals. This is done by pouring water from a pitcher over a bowl containing a bar of soap. Even though a bore hole is not far away, they still have to carry the water. This is an humbling experience. After lunch there was more singing and drama. The people sat on the church pews that were set up in the tent plus saplings on forked sticks. We visitors sat in plastic chairs. It was an all day event. I presented a plaque from FUMC showing pictures of both churches. Charles Brinkley had also made a picture book showing people and activities in both churches. The people of Pukuka loved it! In addition to supplying the funds for the new church building, 1st UMC-Maryville supports 32 students by paying their school fees, supplies, and uniforms. We also pay teacher and pastor salaries. We are in covenant with them for two more years. I wish every member of our church could experience the joy of being among the people of Pukuka. They are wonderful people who have so many needs, yet they are radiant with the love of Christ.

Mother’s Day gifts We want to remind you that you can give a gift in honor or memory of ,an important woman in your life for Mother’s Day and help save lives at the same time! If you would like to give a gift to INM for this special day please contact Asa. For your gift you will get a card to send to the person or family you are honoring.

Last week you may have seen District Superintendent Charles Maynard walking beside 411 or watched a group of people biking with “Imagine No Malaria” signs on their backs.

“The Next Mile” garnered attention across the Maryville District and across the country. At small churches and big churches alike people came out to greet the folks walking and bicycling. At the same time hundreds of people kept up with these journeys on Facebook, Twitter and at www.thenextmile.weebly.com.

Wednesday night about 30 people came out to mark the halfway point of the journey and take time to reflect on what the event was all about, giving the people in Africa a chance to go “the next mile.” When all was said and done, Charles had walked 100 miles and Randy Pasqua (Conference Camp Ministries Director) and Don Washburn (Director of Camp Lookout) had bicycled 130 miles. The week ended with a District Wide celebration that ended up moving to 1st UMC because of the rain. Some 80 people came out to swap stories, pray about the INM campaign, and have a few cookies! “The Next Mile” was not about raising money. Instead it put the spotlight on the INM campaign and how a simple gift can save a life. Won’t you consider giving at least $10 for each person in your family? It really can make a difference. So far 1st UMC has raised $22,400 for INM and the Conference has raised $505,780.

One journey ends so the next mile can begin

Home run Spring and Smokies baseball go hand in hand and we want YOU to join us for a trip to see Tennessee take on Birmingham. On Friday, May 10th, we will be leaving the church at 5:30 to head over to Sevierville for the game. Ticket prices will be determined by the number of people going. If you are interested in this fun outing, please let Asa know as soon as possible.

Summer nights The Young Adults hope you can join them for a weekend on Tellico Lake in June. Whether you pitch a tent or stay in the cabin there will be plenty of time for relaxing by the

campfire as well as enjoying the fellowship of others. The camping weekend is set for June 21st and 22nd. Contact Asa if you plan on going or register online at www.fumc-maryville.org (under event registration).
