12/09/2018 Dear Parents/Carers I am writing to you because of increasing concerns regarding the misuse of social networking sites among some of our students, most recently on sites such as Snapchat and Musical.ly. Snapchat allows people to send photos, messages and videos to other users which then disappear after 1-10 seconds, whilst Musical.ly allows users to post and share short videos. Such sites are increasingly being used as a means to communicate abusive and bullying content. Sites that allow anonymity or content that appears to disappear reduce inhibitions.
As a school, we encourage and expect that our students interact with each other appropriately and with respect, both inside and outside of school hours. We take all reports of internet misuse seriously and investigate them. We will take action if our students are found to have used social media sites inappropriately. Our school aims to prevent misuse of technology. All students have been educated on the correct internet use in assemblies, classrooms and during Anti-Bullying Week. It is in this spirit that I am writing to ask for your help, as parents, in tackling this issue. Cyberbullying is just as harmful as face-to-face bullying, and online actions can have real life consequences. The best way to tackle bullying and cyberbullying is for schools, students and parents to work together. All social media sites have an age limit and most do not allow anyone under the age of 13 to create an account or use their services. I encourage you to continually monitor your child’s technology use and to be conscious of their interactions and the information they share online. The school will be conducting a parent information session shortly. This will be communicated in coming weeks. Kind regards Ms M. Cidem R/Principal
