PSU consumes vast amounts of plastic bottles Approximately 86% of plastic bottles aren’t recycled in USA
PSU recycles over 7.6 million water bottles every year
- How many DON’T get recycled? 46.7 million?
This creates huge environmental damage: It takes 700 years before plastic bottles start to decompose
- 2,500,000 tons of a carbon dioxide waste per year
151 billion litres of oil to produce per year
272 billion litres of water a year to make empty bottles
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
INTRODUCING: THE TERRA BOTTLE
OUR MISSION:“To reduce waste on campus by providing students and faculty with cost effective, high quality aluminum bottles that lead to easier hydration, program incentives and, ultimately, a greener world.”
Why Aluminum?
Requires only 5 percent as much energy to recycle vs create new
Recycled repeatedly with little loss in quality.
Unlike aluminum , plastic…. Chemical structure alterations during the recycling process
cause many plastics become different types of products Not 100% recyclable
