We are asking attendees to bring a snack to share with the group. Why do we allow kids to eat donuts all over the campus? It seems our church runs best, or at least happiest, when we provide plenty of caffeine and sugar on Sunday morning. The funny thing about kids and donuts is this: the kids aren’t the people bringing donuts. They are the cleanup crew to consume whatever is left after morning Bible study or choir rehearsal. We have had some challenges with kids entering rooms before adult classes are over to get the sugary treats and they usually consume them on the spot or as soon as possible in a convenient place. Perhaps we ought to purchase fewer donuts, deny access to the room until we are ready to dismiss and restrict the number of donuts that are available to any particular child. None of those ideas are likely to prevail in practice. Some of our departments in West Tower send excess treats to the receptionist desk and Kathy Lynn dispenses them with caution to keep kids from becoming too sugared up. I appreciate the generosity and kindness extended to kids in every way, particularly at church. But, one last thought…respond to the children as you would your own. It is my guess that you would not provide too much sugar to your own child, that you would provide a napkin and that you would expect the napkin to be used. You may even require your child to sit down to eat. We are reinforcing the role of relationships in the church and I would hope that everyone will see the church as a warm and welcoming place and that includes the brief relationship between the donut givers and donut consumers. Learn the names of the children. Speak to them when you seen them around campus. God has given us these children to raise spiritually. Lets do a good job with that in every way, including the dispensing of warm, tasty, fat-laden, doughy, melt-in-your- mouth, donuts. After that description, you want one too, right? GRACE OF GIVING What is the “grace of giving” (2 Cor. 8:7)? Pastor and author Gene Getz points out how the Macedonians exhibited the grace of giving in a way that was spontaneous, eager and sacrificial. Nowhere in Scripture are Chrisans commanded to give away what is absolutely necessary for their own existence. But the believers in Macedonia gave anyway. There was no coercion. They were eager to help meet other Chrisan’s material needs. But a more significant reason than human need prompted this sacrificial generosity. They gave “themselves first to the Lord” - which is the larger context in which Chrisans are to use their material possessions. It involves, first of all, presenng our bodies as “living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God” (Rom. 12:1). church offices closed monday, may 29 HOST PHONE ZIP EMAIL Perry & Karen Harell 713-973-9543 77024 [email protected] Carl & Jerri Pfiffner 281-558-2607 77077 jpfi[email protected] Max & Dana Grigsby 281-556-9415 77079 [email protected] Judy Taylor 281-844-0668 77095 [email protected] David & Kim Conway 832-717-6797 77429 [email protected] Ron & Marcia Bales 281-246-4152 77429 [email protected] David & Debbie Gaudin 281-728-3224 77450 [email protected]
