T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 www.sjegoshen.org - (845) 294-5328 - [email protected]TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 I apologize for whatever confusion there was last weekend regarding the collection for Fr. Hashendra’s religious community, the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. I was under the mistaken belief that there was an enve- lope in the packets; it was only during the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday that I discovered there wasn’t. Therefore, as we announced at the other Masses, the second collection today is for the Missionary Cooperative Appeal. If you put something in last week for that collection, please let me know the amount, and I will make sure it’s credited to that cause. (The money that was placed in the basket after last Saturday’s Mass is for the missionary appeal; money placed in the poor boxes is for the support of those affected by the hurricanes.) As previously announced, our summer seminarian, Willie Snow, is back with us this weekend, in part to ask for our support in the seminary collection, which is next weekend, September 29/30. + + + Two years ago, Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange and Sullivan revived the annual Goshen Christ- mas House Tour. In that short time, it’s grown in popularity, and has become a very important fund-raiser: every dollar goes to the relief of those in need right in our community. This year’s tour is on Saturday, December 2. While we’ll have plenty of visitors, we do need a few more homeowners in and near the village who might be will- ing to decorate their homes and open them to visitors. The reward is literally out of this world – with the added benefit of getting your decorating done early! If you’d like to learn more, or would consider participating, please contact Sheila Toohey at CCCSOS (294-5124, ext. 308; [email protected]). + + + The annual blessing of the animals will take place on Sunday, October 15 at 2:00pm in the front yard of the parish house. All creatures great and small are welcome. + + + We would like to invite all teens in the parish, as well as parents, to join us for a hike on Columbus Day, Monday, October 9. Our plan is to travel a very picturesque stretch of the Milford Ridge Trail in Milford, PA, between the village of Milford and Raymondskill Falls. If interested, please see me for more information. + + + Last year, Pastor Sam Sutter and the good people of the Goshen Christian Reformed Church hosted us for an evening of dodgeball in their gym. They have extended an invitation for a repeat performance, to take place on Thursday, November 2 in the evening. The price of admission is one item for the Goshen Ecumenical Food Pan- try. I would love to have a great showing, especially of teens and young people (though we can use a few “ringers”). If you’d like to participate, please call or email me. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

Junior Choir All children in Grades 3 through 8 are invited to join
the St. John’s Children’s Choir. Singing in a children’s choir is a great way for them to learn about and
actively participate in the Church’s liturgy. The Choir sings at the Noon Mass on the First Sunday of the
month. Two rehearsals are scheduled for each week: Tuesdays, from 2:45 to 3:30, and Thursdays, from
6:00 to 6:45. Choir members choose which rehearsal they prefer to attend. Participation in only one
rehearsal each week is required. Anyone wishing to join the choir should contact Dr. Hubbard at 845-932-5093
or after Mass.
Senior Choir We’ve all heard the old adage “Those who sing pray
twice.” At St. John’s we continue the Church’s tradition of having a choir help us pray through singing. The choir rehearses on Thursdays from
7:00 to 8:30 and is open to all adults at St. John’s, including high school students. The ability to read music is NOT a requirement. If you are interested,
come along to a rehearsal and give it a try. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Hubbard
at 845-932-5093 or any member of the choir.
