1ST QUARTER 2015-16

It’s hard to believe how quickly time flies

when you’re having fun. The holidays are

soon approaching and we are very close to

successfully finishing first semester. I wanted

to take this opportunity to wish all my

students, parents and guardians a very happy

holiday and a happy new year.

I also want to take this time to inform you

that I will be resigning as Principal of

Boushall Middle School effective January 8,

2016. I have been afforded the opportunity

to work with Virginia Department of

Education and I have decided to accept it. As

you can imagine, it was a very difficult

decision to make. For the last five years as

principal, I have become attached to the

students, the families and the community.

Boushall is truly very special to me.

Being the principal of Boushall Middle School

has been the most rewarding experience in

my educational career. In my time as princi-

pal, our students, who are respectful, respon-

sible and ready to learn, have steadily shown

marked increases in the Standards of Learn-

ing which in turn has given our school the

distinct honor of conditional accreditation.

We have made huge academic gains thanks

to our dedicated and committed staff and will

continue along that path.

Please know the transition of leadership will

be a seamless one. Mrs. Cynthia Heckstall

will be named interim principal and she will

have the support of Mrs. Jennifer Smith, as-

sistant principal. These two strong leaders

will ensure the best academic environment

possible for your children.

I will cherish all the wonderful memories and

most of all the special relationships built

along the way with staff, parents and stu-

dents. I want to thank you for all your support

and entrusting me with your children.

Es difícil creer lo rápido que pasa el tiempo cuando uno se divierte. Pronto llegarán las vacaciones de invierno y poco después el final de un primer semes-tre lleno de éxitos. Quiero tomar esta oportunidad para desear a todos mis estudiantes, padres y tutores unas felices vacaciones de invierno y próspero año nuevo. Deseo tomar la oportunidad para informarles que estaré renunciando mi puesto como directora de la escuela Boushall comensando el día 8 de enero del 2016. Se me presentó la oportunidad de trabajar con el Departamento de Educación del estado de Virgin-ia y decidí aceptar el puesto. Como ustedes se imagi-narán no fue una decisión fácil de hacer. Durante los últimos cinco años, como directora de Boushall, llegué a conocer y encariñarme con mis estudiantes, sus familias y la comunidad. Boushall siempre tendrá un lugar especial en mi corazon. Mis años como directora de Boushall han sido las más gratificantes de mi carrera. Durante mi tiempo como directora, nuestros alumnos, respetables, responsables y listos para aprender, han demonstra-dos aumentos significantes en los Estandares de Aprendisaje (SOL), las cuales han dado a nuestra escuela el honor de obtener la acreditación condi-cional. Con la dedicación y las altas expectativas de nuestros maestros y empleados escolares, los alumnos de Boushall continuarán en este camino. Para que sea una transición fluida, la Sra. Cynthia Heckstall será nombrada la directora interina y tendrá el apoyo de la Sra. Jennifer Smith como subdirectora. Estas dos lideres efectivas asegurarán que nuestra escuela mantenga el mejor abiente académico posible para sus hijos. Guardaré con cariño todos los recuerdos y las relaciones especiales que se fomentaron durante mis años con los maestros, empleados, estudiantes y fa-miliares. The eighth grade students have

been working hard during these

nine week in preparation for

their benchmarks. In December

they will be having a practice

writing test to get them ready

for their March writing SOL

Seventh and eighth graders par-

ticipated in the district-wide

creative writing festival.

now available for 8th graders.

The sixth graders are currently

working on fractions, decimals,

and percentages in math, DNA and

Punnett Squares in science, main

idea and vocabulary in English,

and the colonies in history. Stu-

dents who pass two of their bench-

marks, and are not behavior

problems will be rewarded with a

field trip to the movies. We will be

going to see the “Peanuts” movie.

Los muchachos de sexto grado, en la

clase de matemáticas están estudian-

do fracciones,decimales y porcentaj-

es. En ciencia, están aprendiendo so-

bre el DNA y los cuadrados Punnett.

En la clase de inglés, están

aprendiendo sobre la idea central y

quienes pasaron dos de sus exámenes

“benchmark” y no tienen problemas

de comportamiento, serán recompen-

sados con un viaje escolar al cine

given out to the students by

their core teachers.

Girls Innovate is a program that combines

girls’ passions with technology. St. Cathe-

rine’s students have partnered with our

Boushall participants to engage in team build-

ing exercises and hands-on activities.

staff showed their support for Breast Cancer

Awareness by “Pinking Out”.

Teachers at Boushall are caring, committed and creative


During September and October our

students at Boushall Middle School

celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month,

to acknowledge the contributions that

Hispanic Americans have made to our

American culture. Students of Hispanic

decent were able to show their pride by

signing under the Hispanic country that

they identify with. Art students created

flags of Spanish speaking countries.

Students were also given the opportuni-

ty to showed off their Hispanic colors.

Durante el mes de septiembre los alum-

nos de la escuela intermedia Boushall

celebraron el mes de la cultura hispana

para reconocer las contribuciónes de

los hispanos dentro de la cultura amer-

icana. Los alumnos hispanos tuvieron

la opportunidad de firmar su nombre

banderas de los diferentes países de

habla hispana. También demostraron

sus colores patrioticas.

NextUp Boushall is definitely in the

building!!! We are shaking things up in

the afternoon. With options like cook-

ing, dancing, and piano, the students are

having fun and learning some skills at

the same time. NextUp Boushall meets

Monday through Thursdays and offers

students a safe and nurturing environ-

ment that provides them with experi-

ences that are not always readily availa-

ble. We are wrapping up Session 1 and

gearing up for an exciting Session 2.

Día de la Comunidad y comienso de los SOL

The community came out and celebrated fall with us during our Boushall Community day. The

Alpha Phi Alpha joined us in educating our youth about their mission and programs.

The Health Department offered free health screenings and gave vital health information. Many

booths gave away free sample and prizes. There was also face painting and an obstacle course.

La comunidad celebró con nuestra escuela en su día de la comunidad. Hubo organizaciones

que dieron muestras gratuitas y premios. Hubo una pista de obstáculos y pintura de cara.

our Anti-Bullying Kick Off Night. In addition
