Wall Street Journal & Forbes reported:
Oracle executive vice-president John Fowler makes the case for why
speed—and price—matter today more than ever before:
“Against IBM’s best published results, using independently
confirmed industry-standard public benchmarks, Oracle
delivered 5x, 7x, even 12x better cost performance,”
Fowler said. “Oracle’s Sparc T5 performance and cost
performance advantages are so huge that subtle changes
in IBM configuration specifics don’t make up that gap. IBM
customers are being wildly over-charged for the
performance they’re getting.”

Oracle to IBM Customers …
BusinessInsider.com, in an article headlined Oracle To IBM: Your
‘Customers Are Being Wildly Overcharged’, quoted Larry Ellison as
framing the new gap between Oracle and IBM this way:
“ You can go faster, but only if you are willing to pay
80% less than what IBM charges.”

Financial Services Needed More Capacity for Peak Times
SITUATION
• Leading Financial Services firm
headquartered in the UK, with additional
offices and operations in Europe, North
America and Australia and Asia
• Providing many foreign exchange
services to more than 2,500 corporate
clients in over 100 different industry
sectors
CHALLENGES
• Increasing business and new on-line
client services demanded more capacity
• Necessary upgrades would be
prohibitively expensive with traditional
architecture
• Current architecture lacked “any-to-any”
connectivity and could not add extra
capacity on demand for peak workloads

Financial Services Added Capacity On Demand With Consolidation
RESULTS SOLUTIONS
• A dynamic data center with Oracle Virtual
Networking and VMware ESX
• Oracle Virtual Networking:
- Any-to-any connectivity provides
connections from any server to any
storage and network type
- Open architecture helps protect
investment in existing SAN, FC and
Ethernet networks
• Server consolidation of 10 to 1
• IT infrastructure consolidation
- Reduction in the number of Ethernet
and Fibre Channel ports
- Reduction of rack space requirements
at the primary and DR sites
• Extra server capacity on demand
- DR site reconfigured quickly to absorb
peak traffic workloads
• Predictable performance with Quality of
Service controls

Bluelock Needed Adaptable and Faster Infrastructure
SITUATION CHALLENGES
• Enterprise cloud hosting provider, one of
only a handful of companies certified to
offer “VMware vCloud® Datacenter
Services”
• Clients can fluidly migrate their VMware-
based applications to Virtual Datacenters
hosted in the public cloud
• Clients can get started with projects
quickly and enjoy the freedom to change
their minds as IT needs evolve
• Increasing infrastructure complexity:
- Every server needed 10 physical I/O
connections
- 50 network devices required to deploy
every 500 virtual machines
• Evacuation of all the VMs takes hours,
limiting the number of VMs that could
reside on a single server
• Modifications to add new capability or
new resources were time consuming

Bluelock Achieved 40X more Usable Bandwidth per Server with Virtualization
RESULTS SOLUTIONS
• Oracle Virtual Networking significantly
simplified infrastructure
• High throughput server-to-server
communications enable faster vMotion
event
• Configuration changes can be made
entirely in software, allowing resources to
be re-assigned in minutes
• Wire-once environment streamlines
disaster recovery services
• 40X more usable bandwidth per server
• 17X more VMs per hardware device
• 8X greater virtual machine capacity
• 97.5% fewer network devices
• 66% less I/O cabling
• Lower power consumption and
improved uptime

To understand the level of potential savings, a 5-year TCO analysis was done replacing an IBM configuration with ten (10) IBM Power P570s,
Power 6+ processors and legacy SAN storage with the Oracle Optimized Solution for Oracle Database using two (2) Oracle SPARC T5-4
servers and storage. For this analysis, it was assumed that this was a replacement of an existing deployment, therefore Oracle Database
Enterprise Edition and Oracle Real Application Cluster licensing was transferred. The analysis results showed the significant benefits of the
Oracle Optimized Solution for Oracle Database over the legacy IBM system. Five-year Total Cost of Ownership savings of $4.8 million, 5 to 1
server consolidation, 3.5x lower power and cooling costs.
