This family of chassis showcases an optimal design that addresses EMC, cooling, and ease of manufacturing in a highly attractive, cost effective package. Based on a flexible design concept, the type 39 ET is available in rackmount or desktop versions. These chassis are fully compliant to IEEE 1101.10/.1 1 specifications with horizontal mounting for 6 U x 160 mm cards from the front and 6 U x 80 mm I/0 cards from the rear. The standard front is powder-coated dark black, but if required, a wider range of color options is available.

The side to side airflow is thermally engineered for superior cooling. Standard 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 slot backplanes in various configurations can be mounted. 200 to 250 W power supplies are standard. The design of the type 39 ET family offers advanced EMC shielding compliance and also meets the strict requirements of CE and FCC.

Type 12 ET System Platforms

Elma’s type 12 ET system family of enclosures provides a high-quality, modular platform for packaging rackmount VITA and PICMG system platform applications. Designed to Eurocard and IEEE Standards, system 12 ET enclosures give advanced EMC shielding protection and are available with a wide range of options. Based on a modular packaging approach, the system platform can be configured by selecting the backplane, PSU, device modules and the number of slots. Engineered for superior cooling, the system platform 12 ET is available with either front-to-rear or bottom to top airflow. Standard heights are 3 U to 11 U with custom sizes possible. The type 12 ET family accepts 3 U or 6 U cards mounted vertically or horizontally. The system platforms can be configured with or without rear I/0 card cage.

The AdvancedTCA architecture is designed for e.g. wired and wireless networks and scalable computerized telecommunications systems. Rugged VPX Backplanes

For many rugged applications, the data transmission rate and vibration resistance of the conventional VME64x technology are no longer sufficient. Consequently, solutions based on VITA 46/VPX are targeted especially at aviation and defense technology applications thanks to their inherent shock and vibration resistance.

Added to this, different cooling concepts (air flow, conduction cooled or liquid cooling) and interchangeability in the field through the use of special plug connectors offering a high level of protection, opens up a whole range of other fields of application. Another special feature of VPX is the option of using a rear transition module with a form factor as low as 3 U. Air cooling

Elma’s direct forced-air cooled ATR enclosures have been developed to enable the safe, reliable and cost-effective deployment of electronic hard-ware in moisture-free air conditions. These enclosures were developed specifically for deployment in very harsh environments and have been used in many land, sea and air applications.

Direct forced-air cooling Ideally suited for the thermal management in an environment where the air is not laden with unfriendly or harmful contaminants such as moisture and salt fog. High altitude fan options are available for operation at greater than 10 000 feet.

Indirect forced-air cooling The ambient air is isolated from the air circulating inside the enclosure. The heat dissipated within the enclosure is pumped out via an active or passive air-to-air heat exchanger. Suitable for the thermal management in environments containing moisture-laden or contaminated ambient air, as well as sand and dust environments.

Cooling Concepts

Conduction cooling

Conduction-cooled ATR enclosures from Elma are a non-compromise solution for the highest level of environmental protection that exceeds the requirements of MIL-STD-810 and MIL-HDBK-5400. These systems meet the requirements to operate in extremely hostile and demanding environments, particularly in fixed and rotary wing aircraft and land mobile vehicles.

The heat generated within the enclosure is strategically conducted to the outer surfaces. The ambient air is then used to cool these surfaces. Certain applications may necessitate an external fan to move the ambient air over the enclosure’s outer surfaces. Generally, these enclosures are sealed against water and dust and are equipped with breather valves to avoid pressure differences.

Conduction-cooled ATR enclosures are manufactured from precision machined aluminium and incorporate a versatile and patented “High Integrity Frame“ construction technique. This revolutionary new approach offering scalability, significantly reduced weight, excellent thermal efficiency and inherently high levels of manufacturing flexibility, combined with significant cost benefits and reduced lead times.

Liquid cooling

The liquid-cooled ATR family was developed based on the company’s fieldproven air-cooled design that is already in service across many different platforms. The liquid-cooled ATR uses the same “High Integrity Frame“ construction as the other models in the range, but new side plates fitted to both sides provide redundancy, a reduced physical footprint and increased thermal capacity compared with the air-cooled version. The side plate assembly consists of precision-machined side walls, fluid-carrying pipes configured to avoid sharp bends, and a thermally conductive inserts sub-assembly in the field.

Thermal analysis

Thermal analyses can significantly reduce development pro-cesses. Critical configurations can be detected already during the design phase – even before the first prototypes are built.

Elma’s thermal analyses service can be extremely helpful in creating an optimal chassis cooling solution. Elma can, for instance, simulate how your boards interact with the chassis in regard to the cooling. After modeling your card, Elma’s designers can verify the cooling and make sure the hotter com-ponents of the card are placed in cooler parts of the chassis.

If the per slot loading is provided, thermal simulation could be performed to determine where baffles or extra fans could be added to ensure proper cooling for all boards.

Original configuration: The air flow does not reach all components and they overheat.

A custom-designed air baffle is used to optimize the air circulation causing adequate cooling of all components.

The reduced weight of the side wall – a honeycomb structure based on an aluminium alloy – offers similar stability with a mass of just 1 300 g.

FEM simulation

Some industries require chassis that are light yet extremely robust. How does a chassis like this behave when exposed to vibrations and impacts? What kinds of vibrations, dynamic tor-sional loading and static stress occur in the rack structure?

When it comes to quickly optimizing diametrically opposed requirements such as these, FEM simulations are often the first choice. Based on a FEM model, the mechanical stresses can be calculated and displayed in 3D color diagrams. Thus, this innovative method can be used at an early phase of product development to determine whether or not an intended design will be successful.
