Behind the Power of System Mechanic®
Built on Performance-based Research
The strength of System Mechanic and its edge over competitors lay in its use
of scientific data from iolo Labs, the research arm of iolo technologies.
iolo Labs investigates issues in personal computer performance and stability;
studies the behavior of applications, services, drivers, and other related tools;
and quantifies the impact of a variety of system changes and configurations.
iolo Labs research data is then used as the foundation of Tune-up Definitions™, which inject System
Mechanic with knowledge about programs, services, updates, and other components that threaten
optimal PC operation. With Tune-Up Definitions, System Mechanic is always informed about the latest
PC problems and can dynamically adapt to each specific configuration.
Integrated and Comprehensive Tune-ups
System Mechanic‘s 50+ diagnostic, repair, and optimization features
are engineered to work together. Rather than running dozens of different
– and possibly conflicting – individual products, you benefit from
technology that is fully integrated and compatible.
Further, System Mechanic‘s all-in-one design results in a comprehensive
approach to tune-ups: system analyses are more inclusive, repairs are
more thorough, and more diagnostic data can be reported and tracked.
Constant Peak Performance with ActiveCare
iolo‘s patented ActiveCare® technology is distinctive in the PC tune-up industry; no other product
offers this level of intelligent computer maintenance.
Using a patented design (USPTO #7873877), ActiveCare
automatically identifies and fixes problems when
your PC is on but not in use. This approach surpasses
the schedule-based features used in other programs
because it only runs the fixes that are needed and only
runs when your computer is idle.
ActiveCare proactively ensures your PC is always ready for action, while eliminating unwanted
interruptions to work or play.

9 Causes of PC Slowdown How System Mechanic® Fixes Them All
After years of investigation and testing, iolo Labs researchers uncovered the nine key areas of a Windows PC
that degrade over time—the issues that most significantly slow down your PC and diminish its performance.
System Mechanic is now the only available product that can resolve all nine root causes of PC slowdowns.
9 Root Causes of PC Slowdown The System Mechanic Fix
1 Slow program
access caused by
misaligned
programs
The interdependent files that make up a
program tend to drift apart and become
scattered across the hard drive, impacting
the speed at which programs can run.
Program Accelerator™ uses patent-pending
calibration technology to realign program for the
fastest possible access. The result is quicker
launching and more responsive performance.
2 Decline in RAM
that impacts all PC
processing
When memory is low, everything on your
computer suffers. Programs frequently lock
up and the PC gets progressively slower
throughout the day.
Memory Mechanic® reclaims valuable memory
by reassembling the memory into neat,
contiguous order and releasing any memory help
captive by memory leaks.
3
Slow boot times
caused by startup
traffic jam
Many programs automatically start when
your PC starts: Some are required, but many
are not and create needless bottlenecks that
slow down your PC.
Startup Optimizer™ uses research-based
classifications to automatically detect unneeded
startup items, while allowing all your important
programs and services to load.
4 Redundant
programs leading
to conflicts and
instability
With certain programs, having redundant
ones installed overloads background
functioning and leads to system conflicts
that make your system unstable and slow.
CRUDD Remover™ detects and displays the
redundant programs that impact your PC's
performance and stability, and then lets you
decide which ones you want to keep or remove.
5 Slow web speeds
caused by
mismatched
internet settings
A significant influence on web speed is a set
of Windows settings related to network and
internet connections – and these are often
not set to their optimal values.
NetBooster® automatically custom fits your
computer to suit your internet connection and
fine-tunes your configurations so that more data
can be transferred over the internet.
6 Registry errors and
corruption causing
instability
The registry is one of the most important
components of your PC, and when it
becomes corrupted, the overall condition of
your computer declines.
Registry Tuner™ repairs the registry by removing
all of its invalid and obsolete references. The
process also detects and removes dangerous files.
7 Bloat that
overtaxes the
registry
After cleaning the registry, old keys are
deleted and leave gaps, causing the registry
to become large and fragmented and eat up
vital system memory.
Registry Compactor™ defragments and compacts
the registry to eliminate the bloated space, which
speeds registry access, improves efficiency, and
frees up memory.
8 Fragmented hard
drives that overtax
drive processing
Your PC stores portions of the files in
different locations on the hard drive. As this
fragmentation increases, gathering the
scattered pieces takes more time.
DriveAccelerator™ defragments the hard drive
and reorganizes scattered data, which not only
boosts file access speed but also extends the life
of the drive.
9 Accumulated
system clutter that
wastes resources
With regular PC usage, junk files quickly
accumulate: drive space is wasted and your
PC's processing load is needlessly
overburdened.
PC Cleanup, one of System Mechanic's five all-in-
one PowerTools™, analyzes your computer's level
of clutter and then performs a deep cleaning by
safely removing all the useless files.

iolo Labs™ Superior Performance Through Research
iolo Labs, the independent research arm of iolo technologies, investigates changes in
computer performance and tests various approaches to reversing or preventing any
deterioration. The iolo Labs testing methodology includes:
Observing real PCs from real users, both physical machines and PC snapshots.
Creating and using computer models that reproduce PCs in specific conditions; for
example, a PC that has undergone typical home office use for six months.
In the iolo Labs study The Impact of Time/Usage and PC Tune-Up Software on Selected PC Performance Factors
researchers found that (1) all the tested indicators of performance deteriorated over time and with use, and (2) System
Mechanic‘s PC tune-ups were effective in reversing this degradation.
Among the study‘s results were that a PC without a tune-up took up to 46% longer to start, exhibited up to 66%
more CPU idle usage, and maintained up to 38% less available memory than a PC tuned with System Mechanic.
To follow is a sampling of the study‘s findings:
Windows startup time: Before and after a System Mechanic tune-up
PCs tuned with System Mechanic started notably
faster than those without a tune-up, at all of the
tested machine ages (from a new PC to one that
had been used for 24 months). Averaged across
the periods, tune-ups resulted in 30% faster
startup times.
Also of note is that even for a new (0-month)
machine, startup time improved with a System
Mechanic tune-up: one minute compared to 45
seconds—a 25% reduction in time.
CPU idle usage percentage: Before and after a System Mechanic tune-up
iolo Labs tested CPU idle usage because a high
percentage indicates an excessive number of
background processes are running and using
system resources.
At all the tested machine ages, the CPU idle usage
for a PC without a tune-up was more than double
the usage for a tuned PC.
Averaged across the time periods, a System
Mechanic tune-up resulted in a significant 64%
reduction in the CPU idle usage.

New and Enhanced Features in System Mechanic® 10.5
Designated Drivers™
Outdated driver software is a common cause of PC slowdowns and errors. The new Designated Drivers tool
keeps device drivers on your PC up-to-date by detecting and then automatically updating outdated software,
using only Microsoft-approved updates that have undergone extensive testing for stability and compatibility.
SSD Accelerator™
While solid state drives (SSDs) can be a faster alternative to traditional hard disk drives, these state-of-the-art
drives still tend to suffer from incremental performance loss over time. The new SSD Accelerator streamlines
and optimizes the SSDs, improving overall PC performance and extending drive life and dependability.
Program Accelerator™
Over time, the many files that make up a program tend to drift apart and become scattered across the hard
drive. The patent-pending technology in Program Accelerator realigns these program files, resulting in
programs that launch faster and respond more quickly.
CRUDD Remover™
The CRUDD ("Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers") Remover detects and
displays the redundant programs that impact PC performance and stability. You can then make informed
choices about which programs to keep and which ones to remove.
Whole Home Licensing™
Previously, one System Mechanic license could be installed on up to 3 PCs. Because many people now have
more than three computers, System Mechanic is now licensed under the Whole Home Licensing program that
allows you to use one license on all of the PCs in your household.
Internet Connection Repair
A new repair feature that fixes damaged or broken internet connection problems caused by destructive
software is now in ActiveCare® and the PC Repair PowerTool™.
Tune-up Definitions™
Tune-Up Definitions, the weekly research updates automatically delivered to System Mechanic customers,
have significantly expanded and now have instructions that automatically resolve 18,000+ unique problems.
DriveAccelerator™
The drive defragmentation technology in DriveAccelerator is re-engineered both to incorporate new features
in Windows 7 and to work in conjunction with the new Program Accelerator.
ActiveCare®
ActiveCare, the newly patented technology that fixes errors behind-the-scenes, adds more automated tasks
that enable System Mechanic to automatically detect and repair more problems.
PowerTools™
More cleanup, repair, and optimization functions are now in the all-in-one PowerTools that provide an easy
solution to computer tune-ups by running multiple tasks at once.
For more information on new and enhanced features, refer to the System Mechanic 10.5 New Features page.
