INTRODUCTION

Stress is the body's reaction to a change that requires a physical, mental or emotional adjustment

or response. Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry,

nervous, or anxious. Stress is caused by an existing stress-causing factor or "stressor." Dealing

with a serious illness or caring for someone who is can cause a great deal of stress. Stress is the

body's reaction to a change that requires a physical, mental or emotional adjustment or response.

Distress is a negative stress response. It occurs when stress continues without relief. Distress

disturbs the body's internal balance causing physical and emotional symptoms: headache,

elevated blood pressure, chest pain, insomnia, depression, panic attack and anxiety.

Stress affects us all. If you can spot the symptoms, you can manage them.

A perceived threat will lead a person to feel stressed. This can include physical threats, social

threats, financial threat, and so on. In particular it will be worse when the person feels they have

no response that can reduce the threat, as this affects the need for a sense of control.

Generally speaking, any threat to needs is likely to lead to stress being experienced.

Threat can lead to fear, which again leads to stress. Fear leads to imagined outcomes, which are

the real source of stress.

When we are not certain, we are unable to predict, and hence feel we are not in control, and

hence may feel fear or feel threatened by that which is causing the uncertainty.

When there is a gap between what we do and what we think, then we experience cognitive

dissonance, which is felt as stress. Thus, if I think I am a nice person then do something that

hurts someone else, I will experience dissonance and stress. Dissonance also occurs when we

cannot meet our commitments. We believe we are honest and committed, but when

circumstances prevent us from meeting our promises we are faced with the possibility of being

perceived as dishonest or incapable (i.e. a social threat).

There are many causes of stress in life including; Death: of spouse, family, friend; Health:

injury, illness, pregnancy; Crime: Sexual molestation, mugging, burglary, pick-pocketed; Self-

abuse: drug abuse, alcoholism, self-harm; Family change: separation, divorce, new baby,

marriage; Sexual problems: getting partner, with partner; Argument: with spouse, family,

friends, co-workers, boss; Physical changes: lack of sleep, new work hours; New location:

vacation, moving house; Money: lack of it, owing it, investing it; Environment change: in

school, job, house, town, jail; Responsibility increase: new dependent, new job.

To mitigate is to reduce in force or intensity or make less severe. Loss mitigation reduces a

lender's loss making the impact less severe, stress mitigation reduces the effect of stressors

making the level of stress less severe.

Take Time to Relax.

Maintain a Normal Routine.

Eat a healthy Diet.

Include Exercise as Part of Your Day.

Keep a Positive Attitude.

Participate in Activities You Enjoy.

Get Enough Sleep.

Talk with a Trusted Person.

Learn to Adapt Instead of Control.

Remember to Laugh.

Laughter is one of the best medicines; it releases chemicals into the brain that promote

relaxation. People who are able to find humor in life and are happier tend to be more productive

live longer and have less physical problems. Maybe a good laugh a day will help keep the

stressors away. Stress is a factor which can, and affects everyone at a certain point in life, having

a negative impact over a persons life. It is a well known and demonstrated fact that stress can

reduce the quality of life as well as life span of a person so learning how to lead your life without

stress is very important. Stress is not something tangible, it is a an emotional and physical state

which can be induced by the pressure felt in different situations. People are different and have

different personalities, which means that people get stressed differently. Some, who are much

more sensitive are much prone to being stressed than people with a powerful personality. The

symptoms felt when stressed are tension, irritability, lack of concentration, headaches as well as

other emotions. The triggering factors for stress vary widely but the most common ones are

everyday life changes, unrealistic expectations in life, relationship trouble, work problems as

well as death of a dear person. The higher the stress the more visible its effects will be, effects

which include premature aging, premature graying hair, hair loss, weight gain or loss, mood

swings, fatigue, effects which affect you on multiple levels. Learning about stress

management can only be beneficial as you will be prepared to handle better different stressful

situations. Life without stress seems an utopia but it is something which people can achieve.

Understanding certain things and accepting them can make a huge difference when it comes to

lifestyle as there are just some things people don't have control over. To lead a stress free life try

to :

Get enough rest and don't spend time alone thinking things over and over. Try to accept

the situation if possible and be optimistic. Positivity can help relieve stress very effectively

so try to see the “full side of the glass”. Live your life to the fullest and try not to shorten or

decrease the quality of life by stressing yourself out as life is too short and you need to

maximize every opportunity it offers you.

While some workplace stress is normal, excessive stress can interfere with your

productivity and impact your physical and emotional health. And your ability to deal with it can

mean the difference between success or failure. You can’t control everything in your work

environment, but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless—even when you’re stuck in a difficult

situation. Finding ways to manage workplace stress isn’t about making huge changes or

rethinking career ambitions, but rather about focusing on the one thing that’s always within your

control: you. For workers everywhere, the troubled economy may feel like an emotional roller

coaster. "Layoffs" and "budget cuts" have become bywords in the workplace, and the result is

increased fear, uncertainty, and higher levels of stress. Since job and workplace stress increase in

times of economic crisis, it’s important to learn new and better ways of coping with the pressure.

Your emotions are contagious, and stress has an impact on the quality of your interactions with

others. The better you are at managing your own stress, the more you'll positively affect those

around you, and the less other people's stress will negatively affect you. There are a variety of

steps you can take to reduce both your overall stress levels and the stress you find on the job and

in the workplace. These include:

Taking responsibility for improving your physical and emotional well-being.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Cary L. Cooper, Judi Marshall (1976) A great deal of research has been conducted over recent

years in the field of occupational stress and its relationship to physical and mental illness. This

paper attempts to provide a framework for examining this work, with the dual objectives of

broadening the existing psychological literature with the extensive medical data available and

also highlighting the research gaps in this area. By emphasizing the medical evidence it is hoped

that we may encourage greater interdisciplinary work in the growing field of stress at work.

TerryA. Beehr, John E. Newman (2006) Job stress (and more generally, employee health) has

been a relatively neglected area of research among industrial/organizational psychologists. The

empirical research that has been done is reviewed within the context of six facets (i.e.,

environmental, personal, process, human consequences, organizational consequences, and time)

of a seven facet conceptualization of the job stress–employee health research domain. (The

seventh facet, adaptive responses, is reviewed in the forthcoming second article of this series.) A

general and a sequential model are proposed for tying the facets together. It is concluded that

some of the major problems of the research in this area are: confusion in the use of terminology

regarding the elements of job stress, relatively weak methodology within specific studies, the

lack of systematic approaches in the research, the lack of interdisciplinary approaches, and the

lack of attention to many elements of the specific facets.

Wilmar B. Schaufeli, Maria C. W. Peeters (2000) This literature review presents an overview

of occupational stress and burnout in correctional institutions, based on 43 investigations from 9

countries. First, the prevalence of various stress reactions among correctional officers (COs) is

discussed: turnover and absenteeism rates, psychosomatic diseases, and levels of job

dissatisfaction and burnout. Next, empirical evidence is summarized for the existence of 10

specific stressors in the CO's job. It appears that the most notable stressors for COs are role

problems, work overload, demanding social contacts (with prisoners, colleagues, and

supervisors), and poor social status. Finally, based on 21 articles, individual-oriented and

organization-oriented approaches to reduce job stress and burnout among COs are discussed. It is

concluded that particularly the latter (i.e., improving human resources management,

professionalization of the CO's job, and improvement of the social work environment) seems to

be a promising avenue for reducing job stress and burnout in correctional institutions.

S Michie1, S Williams (2003) A literature review revealed the following: key work factors

associated with psychological ill health and sickness absence in staff were long hours worked,

work overload and pressure, and the effects of these on personal lives; lack of control over work;

lack of participation in decision making; poor social support; and unclear management and work

role. There was some evidence that sickness absence was associated with poor management

style. Successful interventions that improved psychological health and levels of sickness absence

used training and organisational approaches to increase participation in decision making and

problem solving, increase support and feedback, and improve communication. It is concluded

that many of the work related variables associated with high levels of psychological ill health are

potentially amenable to change. This is shown in intervention studies that have successfully

improved psychological health and reduced sickness absence.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To identify the causes of stress, particularly in relation to the working environment.

2. To understand the relation between stress and organizational effectivess.

3. To explore the ways in which the working environment can be changes to reduce the risk of

work related stress.

4. To investigate the satisfaction of employees with respect to various work related parameters.

5. To suggest measures to mitigate stress of employees.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

Stress has a cascading effect on the performance and well being of any organization. So it is

necessary to understand the problem pertaining to main pillar of an organization.

When people feel overwhelmed, they lose confidence and become irritable or withdrawn,

making them less productive and effective and their work less rewarding. If the warning signs of

work stress go unattended, they can lead to bigger problems. Beyond interfering with job

performance and satisfaction, chronic or intense stress can also lead to physical and emotional

health problems.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

A research methodology is the arrangement of condition for collecting, analysis of data in a manner that

aims to combined relevance to the research process. The methodology adopted for the project involved

analysis of the secondary data and the collection, assimilation and comprehension of the primary data

from the employees at the organization. Extensive secondary research was undertaken to get a clear

understanding about Bharti Airtel. On the basis of this information, the framework for the project was

developed and the questions to be used were asked.
