In this report we present a summary of research activities carried out using ground-based Doppler radar measurements at Stromboli. These include data from 3 different radar :
95 GHz FM-CW cloud radar prototype (3.2 mm) adapted from Basta located at 2.2 km NNE of the
craters (P. Labronzo): 0.25 – 3 s time resolution, 12.5 – 200 m spatial resolution (0.8° beam width)
with mode combination to vary sensibility/resolution, range up to 12 km, Doppler 10 m/s,
sensitivity -30 dBZ at 1km (mode 12.5 m, 1s), 35 kg, 83*54*53 cm.
24GHz Metek Micro Rain Doppler Radar (MRR, 1.2 cm) 680 m NE of SW crater, 480 m of NE crater:
10 s and 25 m resolutions, 1.5° beam width, 6 kg.
ballistics blocks and large lapilli were captured by the 23,5 cm-wavelength VOLDORAD Doppler
radar from PL (1.8 km N) in 60 m-deep volumes (9° beam width) every 0,15 s
Preliminary results :
Reflectivity factor (Z) characterizes the ash content: with (D< )
Maximum reflectivity factor measured inside 59 ash plumes at Stromboli spans -9 to +21 dBZ.

WORKPACKAGES INVOLVED
WP2-A2 : Lava flow heat and volume flux WP2-C1 : Measurements of ash-rich volcanic plumes WP2-B3 : Near-vent gas and aerosol measurements We present here a summary of research activities carried out using space and ground-based thermal infrared measurements. These include both lava flow measurements at Piton de la Fournaise (WP2-A2) and SO2 and ash plume measurements at Stromboli (WP2-C1 and B3). People involved in the work presented
80% Hyperspectral infrared measurements from ground-based camera (Hypercam)
1- Lava flow heat and volume flux (WP2-A2) In the framework of the WP2-A2 we acquired geostationary satellites data (Meteosat-SEVIRI, service HOTVOLC) during the four eruptions of 2015 at Piton de la Fournaise volcano (La Réunion). Acquisitions are summarized in the table below.
Summary of MSG-SEVIRI acquisition during 2015 PdF eruptions
Eruption # Start date End date Duration (days) # Images (MSG-SEVIRI)
1 20150204 20150215 11 1100
2 20150517 20150530 13 1220
3 20150731 20150802 2 198
4 20150824 20151031 68 6528
The last eruption started on 24/08/2015 and lasted about 68 days. It was the strongest of 2015. We recorded 6528 images within 12 wavebands (VIS/IR) using MSG-SEVIRI sensor. It allows us to detect and track the lava flow dynamics with a time resolution of one image every 15 minutes.
The lava effusion was first recorded at 15:00 UTC on august 24, 2015 (5 minutes only after the
actual onset of lava effusion). This correlates very well with the ground deformation (GNSS
measurements, provided by A.Peltier - OVPF) in the vicinity of the effusion source (lateral dyke

propagation and fissure opening). By contrast, deformation in the summit area occurs about one
hour before and is representative of the emplacement of the magmatic body at depth.
We have calculated the Time-Averaged Discharge Rate at a time resolution of one image every 15
minutes from the onset of the eruption (24/08/2015), showing a maximum of about 40m3/s, to the
end of the eruption (30/10/2015). Also one can see the rapid decrease of the TADR just after the
emplacement of the first lava flow. Afterwards, the TADR is in the range 5-10 m3/s. From early
October, the TADR increased to 15 m3/S to reach a maximum of about 25 m3/S around 16 of
October and eventually declined and stopped around 20 of October. 2 brief but intense lava flow
were emplaced on 23/10 and 30/10 shwoing TADR of about 30 m3/s.

2- Near-vent gas and aerosol measurements (WP2-B3)
In the framework of the WP2-B3 a large field experimentation has been conducted at Stromboli
volcano end of September 2015. We performed unprecedented measurements on ash and gas
using an hyperspectral IR camera (funding CLERVOLC). It allows recordings of more than 1000
wavebands in the spectral range 7.7-12µm, hence allowing detection of SO2 and ash spectral
signature. The interferometer mode permits tracking of ballistics at a time resolution of up to 1000
Hz. Jointly, SO2 measurements with a UV camera have been carried out.
Below we show an example of SO2 plume recorded from punto labrunzo (far from the vent) at 1cm-
1 and showing the pure SO2 signature (red curve) around the 8.7-µm region. One can also observe the cold sky (O3 signature, blue curve) and the water vapour troughs (1050-1300 cm-1 ) within the volcanic edifice signature (yellow curve).
3- Measurements of ash-rich volcanic plumes (WP2-C1)
Référence du formulaire : ANR-FORM-090601-02-02 30/30
In the framework of the WP2-C1, the large field experimentation conducted at Stromboli volcano
end of September 2015 presented before was the opportunity to test the Hypercam for ash plume
characterization and tracking.
The characterization of ash is made possible from the spectral features of silicate within the range 10-12µm. Usually, a 2-bands method is applied from spaceborn sensors. In the example below, we provide the spectrum of ash at a spectral resolution of 12 cm-1 hence allowing the detection of the spectral signature in the specific range using about 15 bands. One can clearly see the increase of the brightness temperature from 880 to 1000 cm-1, showing the presence of ash and blocks.
Also, the interferometric signal can be used to foloww the dynamics of the ash plume as well as the ballistic blocks using the unprecedented IR time resolution of about 1000 Hz.
