First of all, how are you doing? Could you start this interview off with a little update about “Symbolyc”, it’s been 4 years since you released your album “Engraved Flesh”? Sox (Guitar) We're currently working on our second album, named “Apocrypha”, which recordings will start on February 21 st at “16 th Cellar Studio” by Stefano Morabito, for the second time. We're very excited about that, it has been a time of changes, from changes in style to changes in the lineup, which now include Andrea Sacerdoti; in the last months we've promoted “Engraved Flesh” at our best, bringing it on stage, luckily, with many famous names of national and international metal scene. We're satisfied of the results so far. “Engraved Flesh” got a great reception on its release. You guys must have been thrilled? Sox Yes, we're very happy of the results; thanks to our label, “Mykingdommusic”, the album was distributed almost everywhere. Feedbacks are very good both for listens and for sales. What did you focus on the most while writing and recording it? Raffaele (Drums) When our first album was created we focused on writing and composition, taking care of power and arrangements, leaving nothing to chance. This kind of work will be more emphasized and refined on our new songs, the new album sounds even now more elaborate. Your sound is technical but melodic even for being extreme. Who are your influences, past or present? Raffaele As Italians, melody is part of our music background! As a death metal band we had many influences from the beginning, from classics like “Metallica”, “Slayer” and “Sepultura” to what really influenced us, Polish death metal (“Behemoth”, “Hate”, “Vader”, “Decapitated”) without discrediting typical American integration “Symbolyc” is an italian death metal band active since 2003. The band has released three EPs on their own, and one fulllength album, “Engraved In Flesh” (2009), through “My Kingdom Music”. The debut fulllength release was able to already show a band with high level of musicianship and a great sense of songwriting. Their proposal is a technical, at times melodic, death metal with varied range of riffing and sound, enriched by commanding vocals, that's able to carry emotions. Recently, “Symbolyc” has finished to record tracks for upcoming sophomore fulllength album, “Apocrypha”, set for release soon in 2013. A collective interview, with almost all “Symbolyc” members, is listed below.

This kind of work will be moreemphasized and refined on our new songs, thenew album sounds even now more elaborate.Your sound is technical but melodic even forbeing extreme. like “Deicide” and “Morbid Angel”. Our goal wasto mix these influences obtaining the rightdimension between melody and power.Your guitar work is also well structured. Whatwere you going for while creating your riffsand leads?Sox We surely were never satisfied by the firstriff brought into the studio, especially myself, many songs, especially the newest ones, weredeveloped many times before finding the rightshape. We were looking for a total impact, sophisticated but simple at the same time, reaching listener's ears in the best possible way.How do members’ musical backgroundscombine to form the “Symbolyc” sound?Sox I think attitude is our characterizingbackground, the quest for a compact sound. Ileave this question to the newcomer in our family, who can better explain, since he has come in aalmost tenyearsold world.Andrea (Guitar) My first impression was of arhytmically powerful and determined sound, witha noticeable melodic part, which isn't justaggressiveness for its own sake, is just the rightmix. The most fascinating thing is the experiencethat shines through the sound. What song by “Symbolyc” holds the mostmeaning to the members?Sox Personally, “Denied” for its maturity.Raffaele “Dead Inside” and “Suffering” 'cause Ifeel them very personal.Salvio (Bass) “Oncoming Apocalypse” for itsstructure, I like the fact that its title fully reflectsits dynamics.Andrea “Wingless”, even if it was written beforeI became part of “Symbolyc”, is a song in which Ican really put myself in, it perfectly describes thehorrible sensation of being stuck on the ground.Which song is your favorite one to play live?Which song do you feel is the most challengingone to play live?Raffaele “Suffering”, starting gigs with it isalways an endeavour, is a really tight song... and Istill have my muscles tense when we begin!Sox “Denied” again, I think is a reallycaptivating song... it involves even me on stage!Salvio “Oncoming Apocalypse” for meAndrea “Within the realms of HumanAwareness”. A charm. What is your personal look on the death metalgenre in general in relation to old school andthe more modern and extreme technical bands?

Sox Our look is a mixture, we're trying to makeit more personal but it's really hard being originaltoday, because musical scene is extended andthere's always the risk of emulating someone, even unconsciously.Since the band is almost a decade old, is thereanything you wish you’d done differently overthose years?Sox I wouldn't personally change anything, everything was very beautiful, maybe the onlything I'd change is the place in which the bandwas born, if we were in another country wheremetal isn't swerving this much and where placesto shoot it off at extreme volumes won't lack, itwould be much better, but we can't complain.Surely everyone of us, in time, as I believe andhope, will have a great memory of everything wepassed through together, from nights hanging out, laughs, jokes, and beers, to difficulties, andhaving played with famous bands we listened towhen we were young boys... I think it's all worthit! Will the next album build on the last or do youthink it leaps further ahead or takes a differentpath?Raffaele It will surely be different, the first onehas a simple and straightforward, the second onewill be more elaborate and fast, there will be morearrangements. Aggressiveness along with melody,we can't wait to record our new songs and let youhear some new stuff! (I can't wait. Ed.)Anything else you'd like to mention orpromote?First of all we wanted to thank you for thisopportunity... Thanks from the bottom of ourhearts 'cause it is thanks to people like you thatItalian underground still survives. We wanted towelcome again Andrea in the band, a greatpersonality and a great musician who's truly doinghis best, I have to say, from the first day into thestudio... Like us, he's bending over backwards towork at his best on “Apocrypha”... Stay tuned'cause we got much more stuff going on!
