Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray Edition
Extensive virtualization is just a fact of life in IT today. Driving down cost and increasing IT agility are the primary drivers behind going
"virtual". With an increasing number of complex workloads wrapped up in virtual machines (VMs), enterprises are challenged to maintain the
same degree of security and protection from a physical environment and also leverage benefits brought by virtualization. Attaining the
service levels for these business systems requires a high degree of visibility into virtual environments. Without this visibility, VM managers
have no way to answer crucial questions such as:
Symantec Backup Exec™ V-Ray Edition:
1
Page 5
• How can I protect both my virtualized and physical environments?
• How quickly can I recover or discover data within my virtualized environments?
• Am I running VM backups on huge amounts of wasteful redundant data?
• How many virtual machines are running in my environment?
V-Ray visibility is delivered across all of Symantec's products for virtual environments: security, storage, backup, etc. because virtual
machines should be protected as well as physical machines. Symantec's V-Ray technology provides the visibility needed to peer inside VMs
and understand how to protect these systems and run them at the highest possible service level.
Figure 1: V-Ray Edition Overview
Virtualization has become the primary computing environment for the market segments serviced by Backup Exec. Although Symantec is the
longest standing technical partner with VMware and has had virtualization backup capabilities built into Backup Exec since the 12.5 launch,
Backup Exec has not had a single virtualization only solution designed for those organizations that are completely “virtual”. Why would you
need one when so many organizations have both physical and virtual backup requirements, a solution Backup Exec offers today? We are now
seeing an increase in “virtual only” environments so Backup Exec 2012 offers organizations the ability purchase a single solution for virtual
and physical data protection and with the V-Ray Edition for both VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V, the ability to purchase a “virtual” edition.
Symantec Backup Exec™ 2012 V-Ray Edition is designed to completely protect VMware or Hyper-V virtual environments including critical
virtualized applications. With agent-less or agent-based virtual protection, the V-Ray Edition lets organizations optimize protection for virtual
machine performance and recoverability. The V-Ray Edition gives you granular recovery of entire virtual machines, single files, Active
Directory® objects, Exchange emails, SQL databases or SharePoint® documents from a single-pass backup. Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray Edition is
part of Symantec’s leading portfolio for virtualized environments. With integrated deduplication and site-to-site replication, the V-Ray Edition
is easy to use, providing complete protection for VMware and Hyper-V environments.
Included in the V-Ray Edition:
• Backup Exec Media Server
• Agent for VMware and Hyper-V

Today’s systems deliver more processing power by offering multiple ‘cores’ in a single CPU; a core being an independent processor. That
single CPU is installed on the system motherboard into a socket. So a CPU installed to a single socket supplies the processing power of
multiple processors. The number of cores in a multi-core CPU comes in pairs, with 2-6 cores being typical for entry level servers and 8+ being
typical for more enterprise worthy systems. The current industry standard for the ratio of VM’s per core is 4. For example, a single socket
processor with 6 cores is expected to supply processing power for up to 24 virtual machines (6 cores multiplied by 4 virtual machines per
core).
Currently VMware segments their support for multi-core processors at 6 cores. For systems with CPU’s that contain 6 cores or less a lower
price is offered than the price for 8+ core CPU’s. The Backup Exec 2012 V-Ray Editions follows this same licensing practice and offer a ‘Tier A’
license for each socket that has 6 cores or less and ‘Tier B’ licenses for each socket that has 8 cores or more. The license metric will apply to
occupied sockets (sockets that have a CPU installed to that socket). For example: If a system has 2 sockets for 6-core CPU’s but only one
6-core CPU is installed then only one “Tier A” V-Ray Edition license will be required.
The Backup Exec V-Ray Edition is licensed to protect all virtual machines running on the licensed ESX(i) and Hyper-V hosts and the huge
advantage here is that the Backup Exec Media Server and Deduplication Option can be installed on a physical system thereby giving it the
ability to protect itself AND duplicate the data to tape. The Backup Exec Media Server and Deduplication Option included in the V-Ray Edition
can also be used to protect a customer’s physical systems, simply purchase the additional agents and option to extend the V-Ray Edition for
a unified solution.
Backup to Virtual (B2V) and Convert to Virtual (P2V)
Modern businesses are based upon servers – powerful computing systems that host and manage business-critical applications and data.
Servers are the lifeblood of business today, without which businesses could not function at a very basic level in our modern industry. Some
examples of critical applications found on these servers are Exchange, SQL, and Active Directory. Because servers host business-critical
applications and priceless customer and corporate data assets, managing and protecting servers is the primary concern of IT professionals
across the globe.
Backup Exec 2012 continues to invest in virtualization technology. Two key new features included in the new Backup Exec 2012 SBE product
help administrators solve the problem of moving physical servers to a virtual environment and also give administrators unique tools for
leveraging virtualization technology for disaster recovery.
Symantec Backup Exec™ V-Ray Edition:
3
Page 7
These features are the ability to perform automated conversions of physical servers to a virtual machine replica (P2V), perform automated
conversions of physical servers – using existing backup sets – to a virtual machine replica (B2V), and perform “ad hoc” or on demand
conversions of physical server backups to a virtual machine replica.
Convert to Virtual (P2V)
The new Backup Exec 2012 P2V feature allows administrators to configure protection policies for physical servers that protect the server by:
1. Storing backup data to the Backup Exec server
2. Creating a virtual machine replica of the server on an available VMware or Hyper-V host
For protection policies configured with a P2V task, the backup operation and the virtual machine replica operation occur in parallel, or at the
same time.
Backup to Virtual (B2V)
A Backup Exec 2012 protection policy configured with a B2V task is similar to a protection policy configured with a P2V task. However, B2V
policies run the backup and virtual machine replica operations serially, meaning the backup operation runs first, and the virtual replica
portion runs immediately afterwards or on a different schedule.
Figure 2: Convert Physical to Virtual and Figure 3: Backup to Virtual
Backup Exec 2012 and Off-Site Replication
Backup Exec 2012 includes an Off-Site Replication feature (Optimized Duplication), a combination of Backup Exec’s powerful data
deduplication capabilities with the ability to copy backup data from one media server directly to another.
Optimized duplication technology can be used in Backup Exec 2012 environments to copy deduplicated backup sets from one Backup Exec
media server to another, or from one OpenStorage (OST)-compatible appliance to another (including Symantec appliances). This process
allows backup data to be recoverable at different locations, eliminating a single backup server as a single point of failure; offering
deduplicated Granular Recovery without the need to “re-hydrate” the data – eliminating shipping tapes to different locations.
When backup sets are transferred using optimized duplication, the data is copied in its deduplicated form, greatly reducing the amount of
data being moved and reducing the amount of network bandwidth required.

Simplified Disaster Recovery
To help businesses prepare for and overcome the problem of server failure and downtime, Symantec has introduced Backup Exec 2012 with
integrated bare metal recovery and dissimilar hardware recovery – also known as hardware discovery - capabilities. These new features make
full server recovery easy, and offer it as a built-in element of Backup Exec 2012 data and application protection practices.
Now, using Backup Exec 2012, a single protection policy for server can protect it against all types of disaster or failure, and enable all of the
following types of recovery:
• Server Recovery
• Bare metal recovery
• Dissimilar hardware recovery
• Application Recovery (agent for Microsoft Applications and Databases included)
• Granular Application Recovery (agent for Microsoft Applications and Databases included)
• Granular File and Folder Recovery
• Full Virtual Machine Recovery (Hyper-V only)
The core technology that enables the bare metal and dissimilar hardware restore capabilities within Backup Exec 2012 is called Simplified
Disaster Recovery. This technology ensures that key system-level elements of a server are captured and stored as part of a backup operation.
When a bare metal or dissimilar hardware restore operation is performed, this system-level information is used to rebuild the failed server
and restore it to a functional state. Some of these critical system components include: System volume, Boot volume, Services volumes, and
System state components.
In Backup Exec 2012, the Simplified Disaster Recovery feature is enabled by default for every new backup policy that is created. It is
represented within the Backup Exec 2012 user interface as a part of the backup selections screen through a ribbon titled “Simplified Disaster
Recovery”
Rapid Recovery for what you need when you need it:
• Makes applications, files, and server recovery easy
• Avoid costly downtime with fast, easy recovery
• Microsoft Applications and Hyper-V restore
