The journey in Sylvan Lake and area for Urgent Care or Enhanced Health Care Services contin-ues, with 2015 being a very busy year for the committee. In early 2015 we were waiting for a response to the Family Care Clinic proposal, and as a result had a visit on Family Day from the PC Minister of Health. However once the election was called and the new government formed we were faced with beginning again to educate our new health representatives on the needs in our area.

The various fund raising efforts have contin-ued with the highlight being the new UCC- Golf tournament. To date the UCC donations exceed $115,000.00 that will be spent on medical equip-ment once the new health centre is realized.

Sylvan Lake and area is a growing and thriving community with an overall service area pop-ulation of 22,316, and a tourist industry that results in an estimated 775,000 visitors a year.

Sylvan Lake currently has no hospital, Urgent Care or Ambulatory Care Centre. There is a

basic AHS Community Health Centre provid-ing limited access to Lab and DI, mental health services, public health and home care.

The Sylvan Lake Area is inclusive of the following health agencies and municipalities; Wolf Creek PCN, AHS Central Zone, Town of Sylvan Lake, Town of Eckville, Town of Bentley, Village of Benalto, Lacombe County, Red Deer County, and the 5 Summer Villages at Sylvan Lake. (Birchcliff, Half Moon Bay, Jarvis Bay, Norglenwold, Sunbreaker Cove)

The Urgent Care Committee, formed in 2011, consists of 17 members who are local Mayors, councillors, RCMP, doctors, pharmacists, medical professionals, local service club members and community members.

Currently the majority of health care delivery

is provided by 3 respective private medical clin-ics staffed by 15 dedicated family physicians. Health services are provided from the clinics with regularly scheduled visits, expanded eve-ning hours and a creative after hours on-call system.

The current on-call system was manageable 10 years ago, but with the increased demand it is at risk of collapsing.

Other emergency, urgent and non-urgent visits, which cannot be handled locally, are seen by the Emergency Departments in area hospitals such as Red Deer, Lacombe, Rimbey and Innisfail.

Our proposed solution to this gap in medical services for the area is to provide, under one roof in Sylvan Lake, an Ambulatory Care Clinic for the medical treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The vision is this clinic would be open 7 days a week from 7:00 am – 10:00 pm and have access to laboratory (Lab) and diagnostic imaging (DI). It would be staffed by doctors and nurses. It would provide additional supports for Mental Health and seniors.

This proposed clinic would be a partnership between all health services in the area. It would provide the right care, in the right place, at the right time by the right people.

We envision that in this clinic we can:- reduce trips to the emergency departments- reduce patient admission to hospitals- reduce inpatient stays at hospitals- increase patient and family satisfaction- improve medical access in the Sylvan Lake

AreaWe also believe that once a detailed plan is

developed and accepted this clinic can:- reduce Emergency Department visits at a

substantial cost savings

- reduce total inpatient bed days at RDRHC from the Sylvan Lake and Area residents

- retain and recruit committed and collabo-rative Doctors

- provide integrated care utilizing doctors, PCN and community and social agencies

- improved access for mental health patients- improved access for ambulatory care visits- provide a continuum of health care services

in a sustainable, affordable model- lower per capita costs for services delivered- province wide learning on this accountable

model with trackable outcomes.We met with Health Minister Sarah Hoffman

on Dec 14, 2015 and presented the problems and the possible solutions. We have asked for support including in forming an integrated partnership between health services agencies in the area. To provide planning funds to fur-ther develop this unique health service delivery model. To provide a commitment to ongoing operational funding once the plan is reviewed and accepted. The Minister was not able to make us immediate promises due to low oil prices and many demands on the health care budget. However we are optimistic that our cost effective and quality of service approach will be an innovative solution and we anticipate a response from the Health Minister in early 2016.

We will continue to keep you informed of our progress and to fundraise. We look forward to seeing our supporters at our 2nd Annual Golf tournament on August 12, 2106.

New Year’s Day fi reworks – Fireworks are held every year at the lake to bring in the new year.

Music added to fi reworksto bring in 2016

Tuning in to 88.7 FM January 1 at 7 p.m. is some-thing everyone sitting in their cars will want to do for the New Year’s Day fi re-works.

This is because this year the fi reworks will be in sync with music.

The fi reworks will be in their usual location, over the lake. Speakers will be on the pier playing the music as well for those outside.

Pairing music to fi re-works is something new and exciting for the town this year, a real treat for everyone to enjoy.

Michelle Morrison, spe-cial events and program coordinator for the reaction and culture department for the Town of Sylvan Lake said the fi reworks compa-ny has been working really hard to make a good fi re-works show this year.

“It’s really neat,” Morrison said. “Something we’ve

never done here before for the fi reworks.”

Three songs will play to the fi reworks.

The fi reworks will last around seven minutes this year, but paired up with music, the show is sure to attract not only the local community, but the sur-rounding area including visitors from Red Deer.

“People from Red Deer drive out to see it because it’s such a great show,” Morrison said. “The music should be a really fun and neat addition to the event.”

When people arrive at the pier there will be hand outs saying the radio sta-tion to tune into. The infor-mation will also be posted on the Town’s website and Facebook.

Morrison said New Year’s Day is the second biggest show for fi reworks with Canada Day being the big-gest.

Dan Roy, owner of Big Bang Fireworks Inc. has put the songs together for the fi reworks. The songs he has chosen are carefully picked

out, family friendly and are suited to the audience.

The fi rst will be a tradi-tional song everyone hears to bring in the New Year, ‘Auld Lang Syne’. However this song will be to a dif-ferent modern Barenaked Ladies version.

“The fi rst song is a tra-ditional song,” Roy said. “That’s the song that plays in big parties everywhere around the world. I thought it was a good way to bring in the new year with the traditional song.”

The second song will be a version from Canadian recording artist Lights, ‘Up We Go’ which Roy said has been a pretty big hit this year.

The fi nal song will be Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, ‘Uptown Funk’.

Roy said with these last two songs he picked them because he felt they en-gaged the audience.

“Uptown Funk song was a pretty popular song this year,” said Roy.

What if we forgave others and simply decided to not carry grudges or rehearse pain and unforgiveness any longer?! What would that get off our backs?!

And what if we accepted the fact that most fear is in our minds and decided to courageously face each day ahead for the privilege that it is?

2015 comes to an end - 2016 bringspromise of continued success

Once again we fi nd ourselves ring-ing in the new year, wondering what the next 365 days will bring us while refl ecting on the past 365.

2015 was a year of monuments for Sylvan Lake. The community never ceases to amaze as incredible projects throughout municipal borders excelled while residents pushed individual suc-cesses further than ever before.

Lakers watched as projects such as the Sylvan Lake Lighthouse, the new fi re hall and the NexSource Centre all took shape. All around projects grew before residents eyes and with everyone delighted by the new additions to the community.

2015 proved to be one of historical importance, as both a provincial and federal election left a mark on the Town seeing two new faces representing Sylvan Lake.

Not only did our physical landscape reach new heights - on a community level, Sylvan Lake welcomed Lakeview Parent Link which has since become an integral hub for families.

Lakers rallied their efforts collec-tively for a number of causes seeing thousands raised in support of projects such as medical equipment for a future urgent care centre, in addition to the light house and the future Sylvan Lake Spray Park. Residents of the town made it very apparent that no matter what they set their minds too - they can make reality out of dreams.

Lakers never seem to cease and 2016 will undoubtedly prove to be yet another outstanding show of philanthropic and volunteer driven initiatives.

Just as in 2015 the town watched as many sports teams conquered they will surely see many more championships come from the many incredible athletes who call Sylvan Lake home.

On top of outstanding athleticism,

Lakers excelled in many more fi elds such as the business community.

Not only was Sylvan Lake named one of the best communities in Alberta to do business in, thanks to hard work from Town staff and the Business Recruitment Team - Sylvan Lake saw signifi cant economic growth in 2015, as it will likely continue to do in 2016.

2016 will be sure to bring a multitude of joy to the lives of many Lakers as the new fi re hall will become fully opera-tional, along with the new school being built in Beacon Hill set to open this fall. The NexSource Centre will be well on its way to being complete by this time next year and the aquatic centre will have returned to regular programming.

Sylvan Lake is a vibrant and grow-ing community full of enthusiastic, kind-hearted individuals and a won-derful place to call home. With all of the success seen in 2015, the staff of Sylvan Lake News can’t wait to be a part of another incredible year.

The Sylvan Lake Management Committee is once again asking the-public to register their Ice Fishing Huts. Registration allows for increased pro-tection of property and ourbeautiful Sylvan Lake.

When ice fi shing huts are abandoned on the lake during the spring thaw, debris can include wood, gasoline, furniture and plastic and ends up settling to the bottom of the lake, or fl oating to the surface. Careless disregard for the lake and for others results in serious contami-nation of the water, which is detrimental to fi sh and waterfowl habitat and creates safety hazards for other users of the lake.

Since the beginning of the “Take if Off” pro-gram, the Sylvan Lake Management Committee has reduced the number of abandoned huts on the lake from 25 to zero!

To register Ice Fishing Huts, the public must fi ll out a simple form that identifi es contents of the structure, users and con-tact information. Forms are available at the Sylvan Lake Town Hall, Lacombe County Offi ce, and the Sylvan Lake RCMP station.

Online registration is available at www.sylvan-lake.ca/take-it-off.

Individuals only need to register a structure once, so registrants are asked to keep record of their-registration number. This ensures a proper investi-gation of property should it fall victim to theft or-vandals. Registration also helps offi cials contact the owners in the spring if the structure is found aban-doned on the lake after March 31, the last day of Ice Fishing Season. As of April 1, remaining huts are removed from the lake and disposed of at the Sylvan Lake Waste Transfer Site.

The facility will be closed on Christmas Eve at 1 p.m., Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Years Day. The Waste Transfer Station is open during the winter on Wednesday to Saturday, exclusive of statutory holidays, from 9:00 A.M. to 5 P.M except Wednesdays when the facility remains open until 8 p.m.

The facility is located 1.6 kms. east of the roundabout on Highway #11A and .6 kms. south on RR12.

There is no after-hours access to the facility.

Residential Waster and Yard/Kitchen Waste Collection Base Rate:$19.00 per month per residence for a 240 litre waste receptacle$28.50 per month per residence for a 360 litre waste receptacle

The Residential Waste and Yard/Kitchen Collection Base Rate provides for one waste receptacle and unlimited yard waste collection per week per residence.

Building blocks of communityAll around me, I am reminded of the immense benefi ts

of community and the importance of building and main-taining community.

Community is not just living in general proximity to others; it’s living with the benefi t of each other. If you look at the building blocks alone, living close to each other means that we share common services and see a benefi t in not having to create each of those services individually.

This means things like roads, water, sewer, parks, public facilities, schools, police, fi re, ambulance, and businesses that locate in those areas because of the critical mass of population. If we were all living completely independent of each other, we wouldn’t have the benefi t of having or sharing these resources.

But those are just the building blocks. How we arrange those building blocks absolutely matters but what we do with those building blocks makes every difference.

Community thrives when we consider each other. You could design perfect building blocks of community, but if the people in that community don’t take it upon them-selves to care for each other, the design doesn’t matter. This is where my own community of Sylvan Lake becomes inspiring to me. We have the building blocks of roads, parks, schools, water, sewer, fi re, police, ambulances and public facilities; but it’s what we do with it them that makes every difference.

We celebrate together. Our community’s Centennial Celebrations in 2013 were a hallmark of incredible commu-nity spirit. We came together to honour our past, celebrate our present and build our future together. It was both an inspiring honour and an incredibly fun experience! Through every season and in times like 1913 Days, Canada Day, Christmas, New Year’s, Family Day; in spring, summer, fall, and winter we celebrate together. They say “The more we get together, the happier we’ll be.” We can attest that is true!

We come together in crisis. We came together when several houses burned down on Wildrose Drive. We raised money as a community, gathered clothing and resources; we worked together to house and care for several families who were affected by the fi res. The response was so over-whelming that it created a new fund to help local families of the future who were victims of disasters.

This is just one example of so many. Whether it’s one person, a family, or a group of people, if there is a known need for people in Sylvan Lake, you’ll fi nd people eager to help meet it.

The most recent example for me is the “Oilfi eld Dads” group that was recently born in Sylvan Lake. Started as an online haven for like minds suffering the effects of a down economy, the Oilfi eld Dads group just held a Christmas Dinner to encourage and support its members in their time of need.

We work together. Sylvan Lakers also came together when our arena unexpectedly collapsed in 2014. A former resident who was looking in on the community nominated Sylvan Lake for the Kraft Hockeyville contest and what happened next was not short of amazing. Not only did local residents organize events and take time from work and school and their normal routines to help vote and spread the word, but support fl ooded in from across the region, the province, the nation, and across the world for our community.

Every corner and every group in the community came together to support Sylvan Lake and when every hand lifted and leg pushed in the same direction, we were crowned Kraft Hockeyville 2014 after amassing millions of votes. Community didn’t stop there. We build playgrounds to-

gether, pick up litter together, coach kids together, organize events together and raise funds for charity together. We volunteer together. We look out for each other.

With every snowfall we receive, you can see neighbors shoveling each other’s driveways and sidewalks. On any given day you can see people helping with someone’s groceries in a shopping center parking lot. We have local charities who are working to feed, clothe, educate and support those in need. There are even the new groups developing to distribute meals made from leftovers to those who could use it.

Sylvan Lake inspires me! Sylvan Lakers spur me on to catch people doing good; to celebrate together, to come

together in crisis, to work together, and to look out for each other. The physical building blocks of community benefi t us all, but it is the spirit of community among residents that makes community shine and makes people proud of the place they call home.

I couldn’t be prouder to call myself a Sylvan Laker and it’s because of the people that our community is great. What we do now makes a difference that also builds a foundation for the next generations and our collective future. We are capable of amazing things together and that is why building community and maintaining community means so much to me. We are in this together, and thank goodness. We are so much better off, that way!

Cressey siblings bonded in skiing togetherSiblings Dustin, Bryana,

Megan and Logan Cressey have been skiing all their young lives and have en-tered into several different competitions provincially and nationally.

Growing up on a farm near Sylvan Lake, they were all introduced to skiing at a young age and practiced at home as a family.

With a common love for skiing, the siblings inter-act with one another on a personal and competitive level. But overall, skiing is a common binding glue as they all love the mountains.

Now that they are older they celebrate their individu-al successes with each other.

“My whole family can be involved even if we’re at different levels,” Dustin said. “We can all learn something from each other.”

All four siblings have proved themselves on the slopes in competitions and they each have their own skiing style that include var-ious tricks, twists and turns.

Dustin, 19, loves skiing because it’s something he can do with his friends and family.

He said he is pretty happy because he made it on to the Alberta Slopestyle Team.

He placed second in the junior nationals a couple seasons ago, giving him the confi dence to go further in skiing.

“That made me want to

chase it a little longer for sure and push me forward,” he said.

He is learning how to do more double fl ips and likes doing double cork 1080s (two fl ips and three spins), something he learned in the last two seasons.

“It’s a fun trick,” he said. “It’s nice to learn something and keep progressing.”

Every year is different for Dustin and from day to day he is learning something new and fun.

“It might not be my biggest trick but it’s something fun,” he said.

He is currently dealing with an injury which has unfor-tunately hindered him from putting his best foot forward in the last few seasons, but still he refuses to give up.

“I’ve learned a lot. I’m happy to still be skiing and am learning everyday,” he said. “I have a lot to work towards.”

Bryana, 17, is very proud of ranking number one in the female slopestyle in Alberta for two seasons.

“I placed fi rst in my cate-gory in the female slopestyle event,” she said. “It was very exciting to remain at the top of my level.”

She spent six months over the summer in New Zealand heavily training and this year she has the strong desire to improve her style for com-petitions.

“I want to step up in my competition and take it to the next level and hopefully make a national team in

the next couple of years,” she said.

Some of her favourite tricks include skiing rails and doing big 540 jumps.

Megan, 16, skis moguls and slopestyle. She is cur-rently second in Alberta for slopestyle and fi rst in her age group for junior nationals .

She said she likes skiing because it’s fun and there is always something to work towards.

“You’re always learning a new trick,” she said. “You’re trying to make yourself better and I like how it’s different from school.”

Her favourite trick is doing back fl ips and this year she wants to decide on con-tinuing in either moguls or slopestyle but is currently leaning towards slopestyle.

“I’m competing in Canadian events and trying to place as much as I can,” she said.

Logan, 14, entered his fi rst provincial competition last year in his age group. He did his fi rst open competi-tion and made the fi nals, to which he said he was pretty happy about.

His favourite tricks are skiing backwards down a hill and doing two-360s.

He will be working on his fl ips this season and hopes to be on the B team for the WinSport Academy next year.

With these siblings being close in age skiing is some-thing they can all do together with older siblings helping younger siblings out in their skiing style.

“Dustin is able to help me

and coach me through what I am trying to learn and then I can help Megan and vise versa,” Bryana said. “We’re all able to do it together and participate instead of just watching one another. We’re all able to practice and learn together.”

With Bryana and Megan only being a year a part the sisters often compete against each other.

During training they are very supportive of each other and everyone else, but when event time comes around they interact as competitors.

“Every competition I’m in I compete against my team-mates and I compete against my sister,” Megan added. “It’s

kind of weird to think about but it’s how it is. My sister beats me most of the time, but sometimes I beat her.”

No matter who wins these sisters love each other and Bryana said even if her younger sister does beat her in a competition they are both still able to celebrate the win afterwards.

Dustin said doing the sport as a family is really good for the most part, but said some days are tough. However, all in all skiing brings them all closer together.

“We all have our similar-ities and differences and that’s a big strength as much as a weakness,” Dustin said. “We can see the things that

others need to work on and vice versa for ourselves because we all have a view point.”

This sport also allows each of their individual person-alities to shine through as Dustin said it is a really interesting sport.

He said he and his siblings all have different strengths, with some of them being better in technical terms and being able to do tricks in different ways.

“We all have our own strengths and it’s awesome to see them grow together and all growing as a family,” Dustin said.

Bears football team celebrate another successful year

The Bears football team cel-ebrated their season at their year-end banquet recently at Blondie’s Restaurant.

All 27 players and their parents refl ected on a suc-cessful season over dinner, a big football cake, a photo slide show and awards.

The players include Diezel West, Brett Bylsma, Gavin Lee, Tosh Marshall, Oscar Katzmarzyk, Samuel Jones, Reuben Braitenback, Ryder Brown, Keegan Raes, Gavin Halvorson, Cody Peever, Luke Johnson, Stryder Rumohr, Sam Bender, Joel Screpnek, Mason Rempel, Landin Thibeault, Tayler Weller, Blake Carson, Parker Dale, Ethan Galliford, Zane Johnson, Ashton Hammer, Carson Kichula, Caeden Rush, Matthew Workin and Brody Henry. All players received certifi cates in honour of their performance and dedication to the team.

When handing the different awards out to the players it was obvious the coaches were very proud of their players and were appreciative of how hard they had worked in the past season.

The Bears had a very suc-

cessful season and had only lost one game.

The best aspect of this past season was the successes the players enjoyed with all the efforts they gave, said Bears head coach Garnet Rambaut.

“When you see it through their eyes it makes it so re-warding to us,” Rambaut said. “It’s a fast paced season, it goes really quickly in yet on a day to day basis it seems long but it really is over with in about 2 and 1/2 months and then all of a sudden you’re done and you get charged up for the next year.”

As Rambaut handed out the awards along with his fellow coaches he beamed with pride at seeing his players grow into young gentlemen.

This is because he knows his players have the under-standing that they are a part of something bigger than themselves he said.

“It demands commitment and they have proven to themselves that they can be a part of a bigger thing than themselves,” Rambaut said. “It makes them give in a way that maybe most of them don’t give or have an opportunity to give during the course of the year.”

He also highlighted the fact that the players com-mitted themselves not only

physically but mentally and spiritually.

This is extremely import-ant in a rough game such as football where players are constantly being injured in playing the sport.

“They are very brave to put themselves in harms way to accomplish a goal together,” Rambaut said.

Most of the players will be returning to the Bears team next year with around eight of them graduating to the Lions team.

Quarter back and player number fi ve Diezel West is one of the players moving up to the Lions next year.

West said he is excited about joining the Lions team next year but is sad to be leaving the Bears team as he loves the coaches.

Overall he said the season was fun and that he met a lot of nice guys.

“It was a great season all thanks to the coaches,” West said. “Everyone had fun and we went pretty far.”

He said he feels like a better player. The most valuable lessons he has learned while being on the team is leader-ship and teamwork.

“I feel like I have grown because of the coaches,” West said.”

Brian Bowmanannounces his passing on

December 12th, 2015.

Brian was born in Lacombe, AB on May 7th

1954. He was 61. Brian was predeceased by his mom, Mary, and dad, Gordon. He is survived by his children, Cory (Meghan) Bowman, Krista (Laren) Heck, and Michael Bowman, as well as his grandchildren Evangeline, Holden, Halle, John, Henry and Jude and many lifelong friends.

4:01 a.m. – RCMP on patrol westbound on 50th

Avenue in Sylvan Lake ob-served a male stumbling in the street. A 36-year-old male was arrested for pub-lic intoxication and trans-ported to cells. During a search, a quantity of co-caine was seized. As a re-sult, the Sylvan Lake resi-dent is facing a possession charge.

6:19 a.m. – A vehicle crashed into the trees off 60th Street in Sylvan Lake north of the railroad tracks. A SUV went through a barbed wire fence into the trees for approximately 100 feet before coming to a stop. The 37-year-old male driver from Mirror, Alberta was uninjured and told police he had fallen asleep prior to the collision.

5:59 p.m. – A vehicle was stolen from an address on Sylvan Drive in Sylvan Lake. A Nissan Altima was taken while parked behind

the Open Range Saloon. The vehicle was later re-covered in Red Deer City.

December 6th

2:00 a.m. – RCMP attend-ed an address on Lakeway Boulevard after a group of youths were observed fi ghting. One male was ob-served hitting a vehicle on Firdale Road and another youth was observed uri-nating on a second ve-hicle. A male youth was subsequently charged with failing to comply with con-ditions of a court order for failing to observe a curfew.

6:19 p.m. – A domestic dispute in progress was reported to RCMP dispatch. Police attended a residence at the new trailer court on 52nd Street in Eckville. A 29-year-old female re-ported that she had been threatened by her ex-hus-

band during a custody ex-change. A 30-year-old male is charged with uttering threats against a person.

December 7th

1:02 a.m. – RCMP attend-ed a domestic disturbance on 53rd Street in Sylvan Lake. A 911 call was re-ceived from an apartment however the two occu-pants initially refused to allow police access. Once entry was gained, visible injuries were observed on a 24-year-old female. A 30-year-old male was subsequently charged with assault and obstructing a peace offi cer.

10:39 a.m. – A domestic dispute on Harrigan Street in Sylvan Lake has result-ed in charges against a 27-year-old male. Police interviewed a 29-year-old female who sustained var-

ious injuries after being assaulted by her boyfriend. The accused is charged with two counts of assault and uttering threats.

December 9th

12:49 p.m. – A male and a female are facing charges in relation to a 911 call regarding a sin-gle vehicle collision in Red Deer County. A vehicle containing two occupants was observed in a ditch at Township Road 374 and Range Road 11. An investi-gation by police resulted in the recovery of some mail from rural mailboxes in the area. A 26-year-old Red Deer female and a 21-year-old male from Penhold are charged with possession of property obtained by crime and possession of matter stolen from mail.

6:50 p.m. – A 27-year-old

male is charged after a 911 call was received at an address on 50th Avenue in Bentley regarding a land-lord tenant dispute. The ac-cused and a 31-year-old fe-male were served eviction notices and were asked to vacate the premises at which time a heated ar-gument ensued between all parties involved. The female was arrested and processed for outstanding warrants. The male is fac-ing a charge of uttering threats.

December 10th

4:31 a.m. – A report of a break and enter at a residential address on 44th

Street in Sylvan Lake has resulted in charges against a Calgary male. Police ob-served a suspicious vehicle in the area of 44th Street near 49th Avenue and ques-

tioned the two male occu-pants. Both were observed to be intoxicated and were arrested at the scene. A 23-year-old male is charged with impaired driving; hav-ing a blood alcohol level over .08; and various Traffi c Safety Act violations in-cluding driving an unin-sured vehicle; failing to provide a certifi cate of reg-istration; and operating a motor vehicle without an operator’s license.

5:52 p.m. – A 32-year-old female is facing a charge of assault in relation to a domestic dispute at a residence on 48th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. A verbal argument became physical after the accused struck her 37-year-old male spouse. The male left the residence without further incident.
