What is Required From You?
The ChallengeWelcome to UpRising
What We Do
UpRising is an organisation
dedicated to supporting and
developing young adults aged
19–25 from diverse backgrounds
in order to become the next
generation of effective and
connected leaders across the
public, private and voluntary
sectors. Its unique combination
of leadership training, mentoring
and campaigning means that
young adults gain personally from
the programme and importantly,
they give back to their local
communities.
UpRising was developed and
launched by the Young Foundation
in 2008 in East London. The
programme expanded into
Birmingham in 2010, Bedford
in 2011 and is launching the
programme in Manchester in
October 2012. UpRising aims to
expand to other major cities across
the UK in the future.
UpRising has worked with over 300
young adults over the past four
years, and continues to work with
and develop its growing alumni
network.
Our Patrons are Prime Minster
David Cameron, Deputy Prime
Minister Nick Clegg and Leader of
the Labour Party Ed Milliband.
UpRising’s Trustee board is chaired
by Rushanara Ali MP for Bethnal
Green and Bow.
The people who represent our
interests, who lead our public
institutions and who make decisions
affecting us do not reflect the
population of Britain today.
Out of a total of 650 MPs, only 143
are women and only 27 MPs are
from Black Minority and Ethnic
backgrounds.

In terms of employability:
“the demands today of jobs
require skills much broader than
pure academic excellence. For
example, tenacity, creativity,
communication skills, many of
what people sometimes term the
softer skills.”
Cathy Turner, Head of HR at Barclays
UpRising opens up pathways to
leadership for talented young
adults by equipping them with the
life skills, knowledge, networks,
confidence and power to transform
their communities for the better
and make sure the people making
decisions across all sectors reflect
the talent that exists in society
today.
