Greg Mortimer oam was the first Australian to reach the summits of Mount Everest, K2, Annapurna II and Chongtar in the Himalaya – all without supplementary oxygen – and Mounts Vinson and Minto in Antarctica. He went on to establish many new climbing routes in Antarctica and pioneer ship-based adventure travel to Antarctica and the Arctic.

Born on 10 December 1952, Greg spent his first five years living beside the family florist shop in Bondi Junction, Sydney, before moving to Gladesville. At six, he contracted bronchiectasis, a lung infection causing a buildup of fluid needing to be regularly drained.

At 13, Mortimer saw climbers on the Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains and vowed to take up the sport. Despite falling and breaking his pelvis at 15, his love of rock-climbing and later mountain-climbing was undiminished. He studied geochemistry and geology at Macquarie University, spending his free time climbing in New Zealand, the UK, the European Alps and South America.

In the early 1980s he worked as a geologist, survival training instructor, and Scientific Affairs Adviser for the New Zealand Antarctic Division. In 1983 he was invited on the first Australian ascent of Annapurna II’s South Face, and was one of the team to reach the summit. The following year he climbed Everest by a new route on the North Face (the Great/Norton Couloir), leading the crux pitch now called ‘Greg’s Gully’.

In 1988, Mortimer sailed to Antarctica on a small boat to climb Mount Minto, the highest unclimbed peak in the Admiralty Mountains, and returned by plane later in the year to climb Mount Vinson, the continent’s highest peak. In 1990 he reached the summit of K2 and four years later, Chongtar, then the highest unclimbed peak in the world.

In the early 1990s he set up a company to take adventurous tourists to Antarctica by ship. Aurora Expeditions pioneered ship-based adventures including mountain climbing, sea kayaking and scuba diving in both Antarctica and the Arctic. He has led more than 80 such trips to Antarctica.

Greg Mortimer received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to mountaineering, as well as three Australian Geographic Society medals.

State and Federal Governments, and our partner universities, continue to be generous supporters of the work that SIMS does. However, we would not exist as an Institute without ongoing support from individual and corporate donors for both our facilities and our research.

The generous support of our donors has funded critical ongoing projects, which in a number of instances have matured and contributed substantially to the health and wellbeing of our coast, and given rise to new and exciting research initiatives. For example, the World harbour Project (WhP), a global collaboration on urban marine science, grew out of the ground-breaking work of the Sydney harbour Research Program. The WhP has in turn stimulated green engineering initiatives such as the expanding Living Seawalls project and the new Oyster Reef Restoration collaboration. All of these programs have only been possible through philanthropic contributions.

SIMS is committed to sharing our science, and your contributions have also enabled us to tell our communities about SIMS’ work. Our education programs continue to thrive, and we’re excited about the future possibilities to be realised through your support.

Colour lithograph after paper cut-out and gouache from Matisse’s ‘Les Dernieres Oeuvres de Matisse’ portfolio. In his late sixties, when ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors to make drafts for a number of commissions. In time, Matisse chose cut-outs over painting, and he had invented a new medium in combining the method with lithography.

WIdENING ThE NET: MAkING MARINE SCIENCE EdUCATION ACCESSIBLEPart of the core business of SIMS is engaging with the broader community around our oceans, including through our education programs. Our oceans and estuaries are the lifeblood of our planet, driving our social and economic survival. Ocean literacy, or ‘an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you and your influence on the ocean’ thus becomes a fundamental concept for every Australian. This is only achievable through education.

Each year, SIMS has the privilege of welcoming more than 2000 students from across greater NSW into our formal education programs. Our programs are further strengthened by regional and international students, for whom SIMS is an important hub for learning in the marine sciences. SIMS is the primary institute offering specialised marine science education to Primary and High School students on the South-East Coast of Australia, and the beauty and astonishing diversity of Sydney Harbour’s dynamic marine environments makes our program attractive and unique to students worldwide.

Our vision is to expand our educational reach by bringing students from low-SES, regional, and remote schools to SIMS to experience the marine environment. The potential impact of this expansion is clear from the video that will be shared at the dinner, of children who in many cases had never seen the ocean until their time at SIMS. We seek your support to expand our capacity to make SIMS educational programs accessible to a greater number of diverse students.

‘UNdERWATER GARdEN’ OIL PAINTING By ROByN COLLIER

Artist, Robyn Collier is well known as a prominent Australian wilderness landscape and seascape painter of contemporary realism who started painting in the early 1970s. Collier’s work explores the environment from which she has learned through the observation of nature and constant hard work – being a self realised artist. Having spent many years painting en plein air she graduated to studio work and subjects requiring more time and reference while still retaining the alla prima technique.

Colour lithograph from Picasso’s ‘Toros Y Toreros’ portfolio. Featuring Jacqueline, Picasso’s muse and second wife, on horseback at a ceremonial parade. Their marriage lasted 11 years until his death, during which time he created over 400 portraits of her, more than any of Picasso’s other loves. ‘Toros Y Toreros’ was a tribute to the bullfight. In bullfighting, as in the taming of a horse, Picasso saw a mythological symbol embodying dramatic suffering, grief and rage. This drama of ferocious struggle became a recurring theme in his work.

kindly provided by Chase Gallery.valued at $5000. Opening bid $2500.

Colour lithograph from Dali’s ‘Les Chevaux de Dali’ portfolio. Dali returned time and again to the horse theme throughout his long career. It’s beauty of line and form, and its natural symbolism of raw animal power and elegance were natural attractions for him. Fully aware of the symbiotic relationship of the horse to man and its enormous contribution to human culture in terms of mobility and productivity, Dali considered this unique animal a perfect launching point for his prodigious imagination.

kindly provided by Chase Gallery.valued at $4400. Opening bid $2200.

Original colour lithograph from ‘Miro by Jacques Prevert’. Regarded as one of the most influential 20th century artists, Miro’s work continues to be among the more desirable with fine art collectors. Each piece in this portfolio maintains Miro’s tradition of visual symbolic language; conjuring primary colours and form transformations that stir each viewer differently.

Very rare, black and white pochoir from Picasso’s ‘Toros’ series – a tribute to the bullfight. Signed in the plate and hand-numbered in pencil by Picasso. As a child, Picasso was taken to the bullfight by his father and it became an obsession which haunted his memory. Picasso saw himself as a Picador (bullfighter) in his own life. Like Picasso, the Picador was a man at war with himself, with the bull, with his family and with life – and without caring for any other things.

This photograph was taken when the Finches came in for an early morning drink at a billabong in Timber Creek NT. Named after Elizabeth Gould, the wife of the world famous bird naturalist John Gould. These stunning finches live the tropical North of Australia. This photograph was taken when they came in for an early morning drink at a billabong in Timber Creek NT. The background is some dry grass that bordered the edge of the billabong. About 75% of the finches have a black face and 25% have a red face. Like most finches, their food consists of tropical grass seeds. The finch is named after Elizabeth Gould, the wife of perhaps the world’s most famous bird naturalist John Gould. Elizabeth is the unsung hero of the pair, having been the artist who drew many of the birds Gould described. She sadly died at an early age.
