1.4 CONTEXT OVERVIEW 1.4.1 RSM970S radar parameters 1.4.1.1 Definition of RSM970S radar parameter categories accessible with CBP

CBP allows to manage the following categories of RSM970S radar parameters:

the I/R operational parameters, which are the Site Dependent Parameters (SDP) managed by the Mode S Radar Processing (MRP),

the technical parameters, which are the Factory Parameters managed by MRP, when this is allowed to the CBP operator (technical parameter change is only authorised to the THALES integration team). According to the CBP personalization, a part of technical parameters could be read.

The following figure illustrates the I/R operational parameter organisation.

    I/R Operational parameters

    Figure 1 : RSM970S Operational parameters organisation.

The parameters of the General category correspond to the operational parameters which are not modified when a radar cluster modification occurs and enable to adjust radar to site dependent conditions.

The parameters of the Cluster Dependent Parameters (CDP) category correspond to the operational parameters which are modified when a modification of the radar cluster occurs, due to either a change in the cluster definition (typically the addition or removal of an interrogator), or an automatic reconfiguration due to an event occurring on the SCN (typically a network or an interrogator failure, or a Cluster Controller command).

    The CDP category regroups :

the Cluster Management Parameters (CMP) which define the cluster characteristics and management rules,

one or several Radar Parameter Sets (RPS), each one containing all the parameters which may be modified due to a cluster state modification.

A specific CMP parameter (solution list) gives for each cluster state the name of the Radar Parameter Set (RPS) to be used by MRP.

A specific parameter (coverage map filename) defined in each RPS gives the associated coverage map file name.

At a given time, only one Radar Parameter Set including one Coverage map is used by MRP.

In the General category, some parameters are key parameters. It means that such parameters can be modified and/or read either from the Remote Control and Monitoring System (RCMS) when the radar channel is in RCMS control state or from the Site Dependent Parameters Tool (SDPT) when the radar channel is in SDPT control state. The local parameters are only accessible from SDPT when the radar channel is in SDPT control state.

  • 1.4.1.2 MRP parameter file organisation The parameters of each RSM970S radar channel are managed by MRP. They are organized in the following parameter files (see Table 1 and Figure 1) : one Global parameter file, containing the General and Technical parameters, one Cluster Management Parameter (CMP) file, containing the CMP parameters, up to 16 Radar Parameter Set (RPS) files, each one containing the RPS parameters, up to 16 Coverage Map files, each one containing the coverage map in MRP format. A parameter file must have the extension defined in Table 1 according to its type.

The CMP, RPS and COV files are identical for the two radar channels.

    File type Typical extension Description

    Global .GBL or

.gbl Contains all the parameters of the General and Technical categories.

These parameters do not vary according to the cluster definition.

    Cluster Management .CMP

    or .cmp

Contains the CDP parameters category which concerns the cluster management, in particular the name of the RPS file used for each cluster state.

    Radar Parameter Set .RPS

    or .rps

Contains the RPS parameters used in one or several cluster states, in particular the coverage map file name.

    Coverage Map .COV

    or .cov

Defines the coverage map used in one or several cluster states.

Table 1 : Parameter file organisation.

The operator using CBP is advised to organize the parameter directories on the SDPT disk in the following way: each parameter directory contains all the parameter files of a complete Mode S station, recorded at a given date, that is:

one GBL parameter file for each radar channel, one CMP parameter file, common to the two channels, up to 16 Radar Parameter Set (RPS) files, common to the two channels, up to 16 Coverage Map (COV) files, common to the two channels.

CBP allows the operator to open and edit one GBL file, one CMP file and one of the RPS files belonging to a SDPT parameter directory at a time. Its Coverage Map Tool (CMT) enables the operator to build the associated COV files in the same SDPT parameter directory.

Note: It is recommended to use lower case characters in parameter and coverage map filenames.

1.4.1.3 Definition of parameter accounts in MRP disk In each radar channel, MRP uses the following accounts to store the parameter files on its disk: the Current Parameters, containing a copy of parameter values (currently used in MRP

memory), comprising at least one GBL file, one CMP file, one RPS file, the New Parameters, containing the parameter files transferred from CBP, under verification

by MRP, until they are applied in MRP,

  • the Reference Parameters, containing the latest parameter files checked, accepted and applied by MRP, comprising one GBL file, one CMP file, all the RPS files and their associated COV files,

the Deferred Parameters, containing the parameter files checked and accepted by MRP for a deferred application, comprising one CMP file, all the RPS files and their associated COV files.

CBP enables the operator to transfer several parameter files from one parameter directory of the SDPT disk to one I/R cabinet channel at a time, in the concerned New Parameters account. After file verification and acceptation by MRP, the operator can request the application of the transferred file in the concerned radar channel (see Figure 2).

  • Some operational parameters in the TMR parameter file are key parameters. It means that such parameters can be modified and/or read either from the Remote Control and Monitoring System (RCMS) when the radar channel is in RCMS control state or from the PC where CBP is installed when the radar channel is in SDPT control state. The other parameters (local parameters) are only accessible from CBP when the radar channel is in SDPT control state.

Technical parameter change in the TMR parameter file by using CBP is only authorised to the THALES integration team.

The Configuration parameter files cannot be read and modified by using CBP. CBP gives the operator the means to archive and restore each TMR configuration file on PC disk.

A TMR Configuration parameter file must have the extension and name defined in Table 2.

The number of TMR Configuration parameter files depends on the primary radar type and on the present TMR processing options.

    File type Name Extension Description

    TMR parameters - .TMR or

.tmr Contains all the operational and technical parameters of TMR which can be read and modified by CBP.

Note (*) : file present only when "Cloud contour video" option is present in TMR aircraft channel processing.

The operator using CBP is advised to organize the parameter directories on the PC disk in the following way : one parameter directory is dedicated to the parameter files recorded at a given date. The radar directory is divided in two subdirectories, one per primary radar channel. Each primary radar channel subdirectory contains all the parameter files recorded from it, that is: one TMR parameter file, one or several Configuration parameter file (according to Table 2).

CBP allows the operator to open and edit one TMR file at a time.

Note: It is recommended to use lower case characters in parameter filenames.

1.4.2.2 Definition of parameter accounts in TMR disk In each primary radar channel, TMR uses the following accounts to store the parameter files on its disk: the Current Parameters, containing a copy of the parameter values (currently used in TMR

memory), comprising one TMR file, the New Parameters, containing the TMR parameter file transferred from CBP, under

verification by TMR, until it is applied in TMR, the Reference Parameters, containing the latest TMR parameter file checked, accepted and

CBP enables the operator to transfer one or several Configuration parameters at a time from one TMR Config account into one parameter directory of the PC disk.

CBP enables the operator to transfer one TMR parameter file from one parameter directory of the PC disk to one TMR, in the New Parameters account. After file verification and acceptation by TMR, the operator can request the application of the transferred file in the concerned radar channel (see Figure 3).

CBP enables the operator to transfer one or several Configuration parameters files at a time from one parameter directory of the PC disk to one TMR in the Config account.

1.4.3 Definition of the parameter attributes The attributes associated to each MRP (resp. TMR) parameter are the following ones: the file read/write access attribute, which authorises or not the current CBP operator to read

and modify or to read only the parameter in a parameter file (e.g. unauthorised for technical parameters),

the direct access attribute, which authorises or not the current CBP operator to read and modify the parameter directly in MRP (resp. TMR),

the operational / maintenance attribute, which indicates, in case of direct access authorisation, in which MRP (resp. TMR) operating state the parameter can be modified in MRP (resp. TMR) (operational and maintenance / maintenance only),

  • the Re-initialisation attribute, which indicates, in case of direct access authorisation, whether a re-initialisation of MRP (resp. TMR) is necessary or not to update effectively the parameter value in MRP (resp. TMR),

the subject to alignment attribute, which indicates whether the parameter must have the same value in the radar channel A and in the radar channel B (called " to be aligned " parameter) or must have different values in the radar channel A and in the radar channel B (called " never aligned " parameter) or may have the same value in the radar channel A and in the radar channel B (called " indifferent " parameter),

the Key parameter attribute, which indicates that the parameter belongs to the key parameter category.

As concerns MRP, all the CDP and technical parameters are to be aligned " parameters. Some of the general parameters are " indifferent " or " never aligned " parameters.

As concerns TMR, TMR parameters are " to be aligned " or " indifferent " parameters.

    1.4.4 Functioning modes 1.4.4.1 Overview

CBP has two functioning modes : the connected mode with a radar channel, the not connected mode. CBP is in connected mode if : the PC is connected physically to the supervision Ethernet network of the radar station and a connection is established with one I/R cabinet channel (resp. one TMR) and the I/R cabinet (resp. the TMR) is in SDPT control mode.

CBP is in not connected mode if : the PC is not connected physically to the supervision Ethernet network of the radar station or

this link is failed, or no I/R cabinet channel (resp. no TMR) is in SDPT control mode.

1.4.4.2 Transition to connected mode At start-up, CBP is in not-connected mode.

On operator request (Connect channel 1 or Connect channel 2 command when CBP is used in MRP configuration, respectively Connect channel A or Connect channel B command when CBP is used in TMR configuration), CBP sends a connection request message to MRP (resp. TMR) of the concerned radar channel. MRP (resp. TMR) acknowledges it and sets the SDPT control request in the report message sent to the RCMS.

RCMS opens a popup window reporting the SDPT control request. The RCMS operator can accept or refuse it. MRP (resp. TMR) receives the RCMS answer through a specific message. If no answer is received from RCMS, MRP (resp. TMR) considers that the SDPT control request is accepted.

If the SDPT control request is accepted by RCMS, MRP (resp. TMR) goes into SDPT control mode and confirms the accepted connection to CBP. Then CBP goes in connected mode.

In the case of detection by CBP of a radar channel - CBP link failure , CBP reports it and goes to not connected mode.

In the case of detection by the radar channel of a radar channel - CBP link failure, MRP (resp. TMR) automatically goes into RCMS control mode.

  • 1.4.4.3 Transition to not connected mode On operator request (Disconnect command), CBP sends a disconnection request message to the concerned MRP (resp. TMR). MRP (resp. TMR) acknowledges it and goes into RCMS control mode. RCMS is informed of the mode modification through the next report message sent by MRP (resp. TMR). CBP goes in not connected mode.

1.4.5 Coverage Map Tool (CMT) functionalities This tool is started from a menu of CBP. It is available only when CBP is used in RSM970S radar configuration.

CMT allows to : convert coverage maps from Eurocontrol format, as defined in [MAP-ICD], into MRP format,

defined in [MRP-ICD], convert coverage maps from text description format, based on the description language

defined in [SRS], into MRP format, create a coverage map in text description format file from a coverage map file in MRP format, compute horizontal and/or vertical sections of a coverage map file in MRP format.

The Eurocontrol format coverage maps are produced with a specific Eurocontrol tool. This format describes coverage maps in a geodesic reference centralised on "cluster" zero-point sub-divided into horizontal cells from approximately 5NM by 5NM and an associated vertical extent.

  • 3. START-UP PROCEDURES

The start-up procedures are split in two parts : the login and the CBP start. If CBP Software is installed on LTM RCMS PC there is no login because the RCMS application have an auto-login procedure in Administrator mode.

3.1 LOGIN If you does not know a login or if the operating system do not recognise the login name and/or the password, ask your administrator.

For the first login, check with your administrator to know the available usernames.

3.1.1 Login under Windows NT At the end of the boot of SDPT, you have to log under Windows NT. First of all, you have to open a session by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys (see Figure 4) and then to enter your login (see Figure 5).

Figure 4 : Windows NT session.

3.2 CBP START Several ways are offered to start CBP : the worst efficient way :

select the Start / Run menu type C:\CBP\RadarName\CBP.EXE in Open text field press the Return key.

the average efficient way : open the Start / Programs / CBP RadarName menu. select the CBP menu item

    the most efficient way :

double-click on the CBP icon related to the relevant radar (see Figure 7) on the desktop. In this example it allows to start CBP in MRP configuration to work with RSM970S radar.

    Figure 7 : CBP RSM970S icon.

When started, the CBP main window is opened (see Figure 8).

  • 4. MAN MACHINE INTERFACE OVERVIEW

    4.1 SCREEN STRUCTURE 4.1.1 Overview

CBP has a Windows look and feel (see Figure 10 ) : the title bar is on the top of the windows, the menu, submenus and menu items are just below the title bar, the parameter page fills the main part of the window, the page selection can be moved or hidden by the user, the BITE report bar can be moved or hidden by the user, the status bar is at the bottom of the window. It can be hidden by the user.

The title bar indicates whether CBP is in not connected mode (as in Figure 10) or in connected mode. In that case, channel 1 or channel 2 is written in the bar, indicating the radar channel concerned by the connection.

The parameter page and the page selection are described in the following section.

When CBP is in connected mode, the BITE report bar gives the state of the concerned radar channel (see 4.3.2 for description).

The status bar is described in 6.1.7.

    4.1.2 Parameter page 4.1.2.1 Overview

The parameters managed by CBP are organised in several pages; each of them having a specific name according to the parameters displayed in this page. To display a specific page, use the page selection list box.

  • A parameter page contains one or several parameters. A parameter, measurement or state is organised as a tree control (similar to the folder structure in the Microsoft Windows explorer). A parameter can be expanded to see its structure and field values. Three kinds of lines in the tree control define a parameter, measurement or state (see Figure 12) : the top level line (with a folder icon) defines the parameter, measurement or state name. the intermediate lines with a folder icon define data structures : array or record title. the other lines define terminal fields in the parameter structure, i.e. field values.

4.1.2.2 Icons The parameter page contains access right and folder symbols.

The access right symbol is a synthesis of the file read/write access and direct access attributes, of the operational / maintenance attribute and of the re-initialisation attribute for that parameter as shown in Table 5 (refer to paragraph 1.4.3 for parameter attribute definition).

The folder symbol is used as in standard tree control (Windows explorer look and feel) for lines that are not terminal. The colour of the folder symbol depends on the situation (see Figure 11) : measurement or state, that are monitoring data sent by the radar channel on request parameter belonging to the GBL file, parameter belonging to the CMP file, parameter belonging to the RPS file, parameter belonging to the TMR file.

    Measurement or state (grey)

    GBLand TMR parameter (dark blue)

    CMP parameter (dark green)

    RPS parameter (light blue)

    Figure 11 : Folder symbols.

The philosophy of the access right symbol is the following one : colour :

    black : no re-initialisation, red : re-initialisation required.

symbol : : maintenance, : operational or maintenance, : direct access

For direct access parameter and when CBP and the radar channel are connected, a click on the access symbol enable to display a direct access window in order to read a parameter from radar channel or to write a parameter in radar channel.
