But when you press the pause button on human beings they start. You start to reflect, you start to rethink your assumptions, you start to reimagine what is possible and most importantly, you start to reconnect with your most deeply held beliefs. Once you have done that, you can begin to imagine a better path.” Here are words that should make us all pause, especially our students whose lives can be so frantic, busy and often noisy. Here is an individual who understands the pressures of today’s market place and the increasing demands on today’s next generation of leaders, pointing out the importance of a moment for reflection. The opportunity to stop and pause is an essential condition of our life. When we take that opportunity to take stock, we can provide ourselves with much needed space for reflection and thought. For education this insight is crucial – deep learning and deep knowledge can only come from practising deep reflection and consideration. Reflecting on what has been taught, grappling intellectually with complex concepts and arguments, undoubtedly require time and quiet. Deep reflection is not something to be done at speed – nor can it be done in the gaps of life. Time needs to be set aside for knowledge to be absorbed and understanding to be forged. In young people’s ever increasingly loud and busy world, such moments are precious. C Muller Head 7L’s Lunch time Concert The Jarvis Room was packed with parents, staff and girls for 7L’s concert during the lunch hour on Thursday. Being the first form to start the series of Year 7 concerts, and so early in the term, 7L did rather draw the ‘short straw’, but they were really well organised in preparing for it and it has been a pleasure rehearsing with them over the past two weeks. Everyone took part, either singing a solo or performing on the piano, treble recorder, saxophone, clarinet, cello or guitar. A small group began the concert with their rendition of ‘Walking in the air’. Well done and thank you 7L! T Scrutton Top of the Bench 2017 This Tuesday, SWPS hosted the regional round of the Royal Society of Chemistry competition, Top of the Bench. Schools from the region enjoyed completing a range of practical activities and also sat a written paper. The SWPS team, comprising of Maddie and Catherine (Y9), Emily (Y10) and Charlotte (Y11), performed superbly and the department were proud of the confident way in which they approached the challenging tasks!
