About SWITCH-ON Spatial Information Platform Products and Services Webmaster Virtual Water- Science Laboratory Benefits for Water Managers Tools for decision support SWITCH-ON will launch a continuously expanding number of water-information products and services, which will: • Contribute to planning for safety, sustainability, exploitation, adaptation and public awareness. Address river flow, floods, droughts, water quality, change and multiple water-use. • Progress implementation of the European water policy. Facilitate the finding, combining, visualisation and transformation of data for tailored water assessments. • Profit from new knowledge and research. Return the low investment cost (from using open data) in low pricing. • Improve continuously as a result of incremental development design. Ensure direct links to scientists and tool developers, who embrace feedback and user requirements. The SWITCH-ON web portal will offer a quick overview and easy access to European land, climate, and water data – bridging the gap between research, business and water management. The project will build on open data, provide infrastructure for sharing and collaboration, and assist sci- entists, companies and society by repurposing and refining data from many sources. Benefits for tool developers Tailored data, research results and marketing SWITCH-ON will give free access to basic components for developing commercial information products and services, such as: A spatial information platform with graphical interfaces and set of analysis tools. Tailored geo-data for water assessments in catchments. Modelled time-series of many water variables. Quality indication for many open datasets. New methods for interpolation and extrapolation in time and space. New knowledge of natural processes, hazards and on-going environmental change. New open data sources, some with application programming interface (API ). Analysis of societal needs and market potential for water-information products. Direct links to scientists ideas and water managers needs. Benefits for Researchers An open Virtual Water-Science Laboratory SWITCH-ON will provide research infrastructure to facilitate collaboration, transparency and repeatable computational experiments, through: Tailored datasets for catchment analysis on a pan-European level and for selected sites. Tools to access, inspect and transform data (including a catalogue, metadata, user-guides). Numerical models, source codes and manuals. Common protocols and procedures for collaborative experiments and data quality assurance. Forum for open discussions on data, experiments, result analysis and collaborative papers. Data repository and tools for publishing raw research-result data. Direct links to practical applications and feedback on research results. “The opportunities for research and education using open data are tremendous—we can’t anticipate what people might find or do with data when it is freely available.
