Photo: PTI New Delhi: Swine flu has claimed 875 lives across the country, with 34 more deaths reported till Monday while the number of those infected with the virus has crossed the 15,000 mark, health minister J.P. Nadda told Parliament on Wednesday. He reiterated that most deaths were due to comorbidities—other diseases or disorders present in the patient. “Patients are coming into hospitals very late and by then the disease co morbidities complicate the cases. We have been repeatedly saying that there is no need to panic but people need to be alert and report to hospitals on time,” Nadda said. The statement came on a day the Delhi high court told the government to list out the steps it has taken or plans to take to deal with the swine flu outbreak within a week. New Delhi Swine flu has claimed 875 lives across the country with 34more deaths reported till Monday while the number of those infected withthe virus has crossed the 15000 mark health minister JP Nadda toldParliament on Wednesday
He reiterated that most deaths were due to coshymorbiditiesmdashother diseasesor disorders present in the patient

He said the drug Oseltamivir used during the 2009shy2010 pandemicremains effective for treatment now as well
According to the health ministry Rajasthan accounts for the highestnumber of deaths at 225 along with 4734 infections
Gujarat has the second worst figures with 219 deaths and 3337 infectionsThe third highest figures come from Madhya Pradesh where 117 peoplehave died so far and 660 have been infected
In Maharashtra the virus has claimed 103 lives and infected 1055 people
In Delhi eight people have perished so far and 2337 have been infectedTelangana and Punjab have reported 51 and 37 deaths respectively Halfthe deaths in Andhra Pradesh were due to coshymorbidity while the figuresfor Delhi Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra were 66 413 and 375respectively
ldquoThe situation is being closely monitored by us and all necessaryassistance is being provided to the states Adequate stocks of medicinemasks and PPE (personal protective equipment) are available No effortswill be spared for effectively dealing with the situationrdquo Nadda said
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said it was ldquocarefully watchingrdquo theswine flu situation in India though it said that there are ldquono signsrdquo yet of themakings of a large outbreak of the H1N1 virusmdashnormal for this time of theyear
ldquoWe are working with the government on this to watch what is panning outin India So far there are no signs of the makings of a large outbreak Butwe are watching carefullyrdquo WHO assistant director general Flavia Bustreotold reporters
The number of people who died from swine flu in 2009 was 981 out of the27236 cases reported while a year later 1763 perished among 20604reported cases
In 2012 there were 405 casualties out of 5044 reported cases
In 2013 5253 people were affected while 699 people lost their lives
Last year 937 cases of swine flue were reported of whom 218 died
The health minister dismissed media reports that there was a shortage ofOseltamivir saying the drug was being manufactured in India
ldquoWe have held meetings with the manufacturers on two occasions Theseindigenous manufacturers have confirmed that they have sufficient capacityand stock of active pharmaceutical ingredients to meet requirements Infact one of the manufacturers is a central public sector undertakingrdquo hesaid
Nadda said his ministry has supplied 58000 capsules of Oseltamivir 3000Nshy95 masks and 9500 PPE to affected states while maintaining anemergency stock of Oseltamivir ldquoIn addition we have in stock 10000 Nshy95masks and sufficient number of PPE To guide and assist the stategovernments teams from the ministry have been sent to TelanganaRajasthan Gujarat Maharashtra and Madhya Pradeshrdquo Nadda said

The case will come up for hearing on 4 March
On Tuesday the Ahmedabad district collector imposed Section 144prohibiting mass gatherings without prior permission because of swine flu
A statement from the collectorrsquos office said ldquoIt has come to our notice thatswine flu cases have been on the rise in Gujarat including AhmedabadThe virus which causes swine flu is contagious and generally infectspeople by entering through nostrils and mouth mostly at crowded placesrdquo
