areas of good practice.
We welcome students from across the
country and overseas and our helpful
support staff will provide you with
information on the local area as well as
accommodation available in Swindon.
Today, many students also decide to study
locally instead of going away to university
and a large number of our students come
from the local region, enabling them to
combine university-level study with workand home commitments.
Our campus has a stunning Learning
Resource Centre (LRC). The centre is a
great environment in which to study and

The Access course is for adults usually over the age of19 years who have no or few academic qualications,
but who would like to proceed to a degree course or on
to professional training. The course will help you build on
your past experiences and develop the knowledge, skills
and understanding needed to apply to study at degree or
diploma level at college or university.
Abu h cuYou will work towards credits and levels to reach
the learner achievement standards set across
all Open College Network, Oxford, Thames and

AYour progress is monitored by continuous
assessment throughout the year and in some
instances by end of module exams.
A programme of exam practice is also included
to help students feel better prepared.
Continuous assessments will include short and
long essays, reports, project work, posters,
presentations, individual research and group work.
Students are encouraged to evaluate themselves
and their progress and to participate in discussions
with fellow students. Assessment is built around
achieving credits at different levels within the units,
which make up each module or subject. Studentsmust achieve at least 60 credits, of which 45 must
be at Level 3 in order to achieve the Access

During the Access to HE programme, taster days off
campus are organised for the students to give them
a taste of what university life is all about. During 2011,
students on the Access to Higher Education
(Nursing) programme took part in a Health and
Social Care taster day at the Great Western Hospital,
Swindon. The purpose of the taster day was to give
Swindon College Access students information on
the range of Health and Social Care professions and
courses available and the opportunity to meet current
health care practitioners. Five workshops were offered
during the day including: Adult nursing, mental health
nursing, clinical skills, higher education nancial
support and a tour of the hospital was provided.
A m ol, f sd Cllg ad:
The Access students really enjoyed the
workshops and found them very informative,
interesting and engaging. The students were
given an invaluable insight into what it is like
working in the health care sector and the information
they received will help them in their future studies and
in choosing their career paths within the health care
profession.

Paul originally studied in Exeter and took the Foundation
Art Diploma after A levels. He then worked in retail
management for seven years, before deciding to go back
to art college. After a year in Bournemouth on an animation

skills. Paul says everyone involved in the course is
passionate and the teaching staff have experience in many
diverse industry specialisms, which offers a wide skills set
for students to tap in to.
