SWIM-MASTER JUNE - JU LV 1977 NATIONAL A.A.U. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SHORT COURSE MASTERS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS Just completed was the 13th National Masters Swimming Cham- p.ionships held on Hay 13-15 at the Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale. There are three people who have competed in all 13 Championships (pictured above) - Hamilton Anderson, Hildred Anderson and Ransom Arthur. Congratula- tions to them and hopefully they will compete in many more. This was the 6th Short Course Cham pionship and the th i rd one held in Fort Lauderdale. Many thanks to all of the swimmers who competed and made it such a great meet! All 611 of you- 393 men and 216 women. It took many hours of preparation and my thanks to son Larry who helped organize those thou- sands of IBM cards. Daughter Janice came early and helped with the banquet tickets and program s. One of the most im- portant people at any m eet is the a nnouncer and many thanks to David Beardsley who came all the way from Minnesota to sit at the mike. And then there were two great head timers Betts Higgins and Enid Uhrich - and our thanks to them. We managed to get the meet started and finsihed with these and many more volunteers. But we. must not overlook that super- ior being who brought the rains those three days before the meet - just to cool the water - let the sun shine for three days during the meet , and waited until Monday for the Power Shortage! All complaints registered were handled - one way or another. Our apologies to anyone we offended. If you are wondering why we swam the women at the same end {no scoreboard) there are several reasons: I) we did this the previous two times (before sco r eboard) because the women's l ocker room ls on the west and the men's locker room is on the east; 2) It saves on confusion; 3) there were so many more men e ntered that It seemed reasonable to use the scoreboard for the ma- jority. The water was 77° on Thursday. It Is impossible to keep a constant water temperature in an outdoor pool. Some like It hot and some like It coldl Hopefu l ly, you all had enough rest between races. If not, I would suggest that you enter different events in future meets. This was the first time that we tr i ed an optional banquet. I was delighted that over half of the participants were in attendance at our social event. However, It was neither the right time nor the right place for political leafletsl I must apologize for the misunderstanding about the pool on Thursday. I have a letter from the Aquatic Director giving us the use of the pool for four days. But, the new pool supervisor saw flt not to honor the commitment and charged everyone $1.00 to use the pool. He was going to charge at night but that got straightened out before Thursday evening came. It seems to me that swimmers could get into the right lanes in the right heats! Everytlme a swimmer is not in the right lane in the right heat it just compounds the problems in the office. Next ti me - if you your heat you will not be allowed to swim the event! So make sure you get In the right place at the right time. In all of our AAU Swimming Programs, there are no rules for duplicate awards. I have brought this subject up at sever- al National Committee meetings but nothing was forthcoming. The most difficult part of running a National meet is get- ting out the results of each event and keeping track of the winners for receiving one patch. Duplicate awards would only add to the confusion. Not everyone helping at the meets ls famll lar with Masters swimming. Please check the results carefully and if there are any known mistakes {i.e., you didn 't swim the event) please let me know. I have ma! led out al 1 medals that were left. If for some reason you didn't receive yours, please let me know. I will keep the IBM cards and machine tapes until June 30th. Many thanks for all of the very nice letters - such as: " I would 1 ike to thank you for your efforts, once again , in putting together, organizing and running so fast, fun and fantastic a National Championship meet. I admire your effuse energy In keeping our Masters program going full tllt ... wlth all the meets you've sponsored, all the publications and rec- ord I !stings you pub l ish, and all the mill ions of tedious jobs and hours it takes in doing what you do so well. NATIONAL A.A.U. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SHORT COURSE MASTERS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Just completed was the 13th National Masters Swimming Champ.ionships held on Hay 13-15 at the Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale. One of the most important people at any meet is the announcer and many thanks to David Beardsley who came all the way from Minnesota to sit at the mike. June Krausu will have a chance to get t\'en with htr mother thi$ weekend in the Short Course Masters Swimming Championships.
"Mom says ·r·m making htr swim because she made me swun when 1 was lmle," said Krauser, the meet's director "It may look hke my revengt but I think she'd be swimming anyway."

They won't be just competJna. though. they'll be socializing, too.
"I run into people every year that I ha\-'fll't seen in ages." she said. "It's great to SM a lot of people I use ro compete agamst. But we meet new people ioo. It's a great form of friend· ship."
It's alS<> a great way to get exce-rc1se and sta~· in shape.
have It now And one man m 1973 had a heart auack at the meet. He would have never survived ii he wasn·t a swimmu, And M still swim.&."
Then there's Nellie Brown of Washington, D.C , the oldest entrant for the meet which begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. She is 83 and whtn Mrs. Krauser met her. Srown was on crutches.
She will be •wimmine in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle in the over 6S age group.
A tota.I of 611 swimmers have signed up ror this year's meet which is divided up lnto 12 groups ranging rrom the 2S to 29-year~lds to Nellie Brown.

"There's nothing that compares with the feeling of beini: in shape." contends Geoghegan, explaining his return to ,wimming. "S11.imming lap~ isn't fun. just a necessary evil, but anything that is physically beneficial is not totally enjoya· ble. This beats mo~t exercises."
"He \till has lht• intere'l after all thc~e ~·r.1r,. that's what ama7.P~ mt'." note' John Collins, ~on or Jack and himself a former All Amerac·an w.1mmcr al Indiana who helps coach Ge<Jghegan. runs the Badgers AAU swim program and coaches the Manhattanville College team. "He gets in the pool with my kids and does the same workout."
"He s till beats me in the short dis· tances," noted Badger Mike La Monica of New Rochelle and Iona Prep. "He's not bad; he's okay," added another Badger. Matt Rafferty of Iona Prep.
The point Geoghegan continually at· tempts to drive home is that the Masters program is geared for panicipation.
" The purpose of the masters program is to keep you swimming," Geoghegan says. "The compelitlon's there, sure, but most of us could care less in the sense of individual achievement."
Geoghegan 's introduction into the mas· ters program followed a seven-year coaching career at the Rye YMCA, through the recommendation or Mike Laux, an attorney friend from Westport, Conn.
"I got back, and boy ii was murder at first," recalls Geoghegan. "I stayed with
ii because I enjoy it. For me. it was esst'n· tially a way of genin!( back to and staying in ~hape. From what I can see, il seem> lo combat the aging process: we've got some remarkable individual~ involved."
Geoghegan, a father of three, contends that most people who stick with the pro· gram enjoy not only swimming and its benefits, but the social aspects as well. "You'll find that the people in the program are alive, aware."
Geoghegan, who received hi~ law de· gree from Fordham in 1968 and is pres· ently a partner in the Westche\ter firm of Taylor and McCullough, is a member or the Villanova Alumni Swim Committee that each year spon~ors a banquet in Larchmont, and also honors local outstanding s11immers.
During Geoghegan's coaching tenure, the Rye YMCA captured the stale title

The Geoghegans play a lot of tennis. now, and Jack is hoping to play a lot more. "That's m1 sport of prefcrc•nce right now, but tenni\ is not !'nough. a\ far as I'm concerned, in the a>pect of a longtime health framework."
Jack say'> he's not afraid of gro11.ing old. and that his father, Arthur, still going strong as a septuagenarian, has set a tremendous example "llis thing was rowing, but now he ride'> a horl>e daily and ice skates almo~t every night," Jack '>&id. "My dad (vice chairman of the board at

Geoghegan's best Masters rime was the SO.I clocking he did three week> ago in the 100 freestyle . The record for the :»-39 age group is 51.4 "I'd make All <'<rnnly now," laughs Geoghegan.
But the medals are not what keep;, Ge· oghegan going a' he battle\ that implaca ble enemy, time. "What am I going to do with all the medal ,?" he a;ks. "ll ;ound;, trite, but true- masters ;,wimmer' are not looking for medals. They're looking for way; to live longer and in better health"

Ken Uhl of Pelham. in the 4~44 di\'i'ion, once competed at Georgeto11n University and expla1m. his participation in the Masters program:
"Every ;,o often I feel terrible and I got to get back in shape; that's what keeps me going,'' says Uhl. whm,e 12·year-old daughter Rebecca i.wims for the Badgers s11 im team in Larchmont.
Uhl took pan in his fir~t Master' meet three years ago when he took Rebe<·ra to competition in Richmond. Va "They had a !\laster'> meet there too, and that'' 11 hen
I decided to get back in ;,liape to the point 11 here I could handle myself "
Uhl had stayed away from competitiH swimming for 15 year~ and was M~rn a>k· ing him, elf, 'What am I doing. am I crazy?' but li\'ed to LCll the tale.
"They got guys swimming at 80," ..,ay; Uhl. somewhat in awe.
Another local national champion in the Master' program, also helped by John Collins, i\ Harri>On High coach J err} Cur· ran, who has won the back, troke in the 10. 41 division.
