Common name:West Indian mahogany,Cuban mahogany tree,Dominican mahogany,Jamaican mahogany tree,Spanish mahogany tree,West Indies mahogany,mahogany,Puerto Rico mahogany tree,small leaf mahogany.
Common species: There are four species of Sweitenia : Caribbean mahogany (Swietenia mahogani), Honduran or Pacific Coast mahogany (Swietenia humilis), bigleaf or big-leafed mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and Venezuelan mahogany (Swietenia candollei).

Distribution It has been planted in some tropical countries like India,
Bangladesh, Indonesia etc. In Bengal, about 200 trees were established in 1921 by
seeds which come from the 1795 plantings.

CLIMATIC CONDITION It reaches its optimum natural

SILVICULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS Moderate to full demander. It is usually attack by several insects, notably
beetles, from germination upto sapling stages.
Insect damage become insignificant after these stages .
PHENOLOGY It produces a good number of fruit from age 20 years to 40
years and thereafter although there are places where it flowers early but do not develop into full fruit .

bright, light green and darkening as they mature.

NATURAL REGENERATION The winged seeds are dessiminated by wind and
germinates easily on favourable site conditions. The seeds losses its viability in a very short period. Moderate openings in the canopy is necessary to
stimulate and growth of the reproduction.
ARTIFICIAL REGENERATION The seeds are sown in nursery beds and
covered with mulch. After 7 to 17 days the seeds germinate
and the mulch is removed. Seeds are sown directly in polybag filled
with forest soil and raised under a shade.

o Medicinal uses : The bark extracts are used as an astringent for wounds. It is used to cure malaria, anemia diarrhea, fever, dysentery and depurative.
Efficacy mahogany seed, that treat hypertension, blood sugar disorders, poor appetite, fever, and facilitate maintain sturdiness.
