April 2016 Edition Dear Reader, In SWE-OC quarterly newsletter you will find upcoming events, member spotlight, recap of dinner, meeting, trainings, and much more. This issue covers events from January to March 2016. SWE-OC is a not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering. Member Spotlight Bianca Acciardo is an engineer with the Boeing Company, specializing in Service Engineering for commercial aircraft. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Akron in 2014. There she was heavily involved with her SWE chapter, serving as Vice President and Treasurer in separate years. As Vice President, with the help of committees, she was responsible for organizing social, fundraising, and outreach events throughout the school year and attending Regional and National Conferences. During the WE14 Conference in Los Angeles is where Bianca connected with Boeing to obtain her current position. Because of this, she understands the importance of staying involved in the organization, knowing it can do great things for women in STEM. Currently, Bianca is a member of the SWE – Orange County Section, where she serves as academic advisor to Santa Ana College, and as a member of the Girl Scouts, Outreach, Programs, and Professional Development Conference committees. In the coming years, Bianca hopes to become more involved with SWE on a Regional and National level, starting with taking on more responsibility in the O.C. Section as a member of the Executive Committee. When she isn’t working, or supporting SWE, Bianca enjoys horseback riding, spending time with friends, and soaking up the California sunshine. Member Spotlight

January Events

K-12 Outreach: Skype Friday

By Roxana Carrillo SWE-OC members participated in Skype sessions with students from Warren High School on January 15, 2016. The 10- to 15-minute Skype sessions took place during the students' engineering, math, coding, and robotics classes! SWE-OC members answered a variety of questions ranging from college life to career challenges. Students were able to engage with and learn from professionals while discovering how to apply that knowledge on their journey to a STEM career.

Holiday and Diversity Potluck

By Annemarie Fata The Holiday and Diversity Potluck was a great event that brought members together to celebrate the holidays with good food and good fun. Origami was a great activity members joined in on as well as a diversity scavenger hunt.

February Events

Bell Harbor International Conference Center

By Julia Diaz The 2016 ABJ regional conference was at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center in Seattle, Washington. SWE-OC members attended a variety of technical tours, including one of the Boeing factory and a revolutionary net-zero green office building. Attendees were also at a special SWE-only tour of historical Seattle, which is underground the current downtown. Speakers from SWE-OC presented on several topics, including vapor intrusion in buildings and natural gas innovation. Additionally, our section was acknowledged with 2 awards, the Sonora History Award and Outstanding Program for our innovative technical tours program.

OCTA I-5 Improvements Project

By Roxana Carrillo SWE-OC organized a dinner meeting where guest speakers Nicolette La Piana and Andrea Hammann from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) discussed the I-5 freeway improvements. The dinner meeting was graciously hosted by Parker International in Irvine, CA. The presentation also included an overview of other centrally located capital projects, OCTA's role in the projects, what professionals are involved at different stages of the projects, goals of public outreach and the role of the public, inter-agency participation, and an explanation of Measure M (the county’s ½ cent transportation sales tax).

March Events

Tech Tour: Applied Medical

By Nadia SWE-OC took a technical tour at Applied Medical in Rancho Santa Margarita on March 4th. Applied Medical is dedicated to providing innovative products that improve patient outcomes and enable the advancement of minimally invasive surgery. As a new generation medical device company, Applied is equally committed to improving the affordability and accessibility of high-quality healthcare. In order to fulfill this commitment, they invest heavily in vertical integration, R&D, advanced manufacturing technologies, the growth of our team members. The tour lasted approximately 2 hours and the tour guide took the group to some of the manufacturing buildings, such as the advanced metal processing area and mold development. The clinical development team also conducted a Product Fair to go over the different products they manufacture and discussed how each product is used in a clinical setting. Attendees were in awe of all of the different devices used during surgery!

Mom’s Club - Park Playdate

By Kathleen Monk Thanks to Vicki, Carrie and Jennifer for bringing your kids to Mariners park for our mom’s group play date! We had 6 kids ranging from 6 months to 3 years old and everyone had a fun time getting to know each other. Looking forward to the next event!
