The Swartz Creek Hometown Days (SCHTD) is a celebration of com-munity. It truly takes thousands of man hours to organize and host this festival. Plus thousands of dol-lars in generous donations from lo-cal businesses and individuals are used to make it happen. The time, energy and money is well invested as you will see as the entire community comes together to play.
The Carnival will be set up and ready for fun on Thursday and that evening the SCHTD committee is hosting a kickoff dinner where the King and Queen of Hometown Days will be crowned. Right after the din-ner you can head over to the Enter-tainment Tent to watch the Bubba’s Got Talent Finals.
Our main attractions this year are the Vicenta’s White Tigers and High Flying Pages Aerial & Animal Thrill Show. They will be performing Fri-day, Saturday and Sunday.
The Entertainment tent hosts a number of acts. On Saturday night
Green Bottle Fly and Sunday Crush will appear.
There are a great number of FREE things to do and see during the fes-tival. Even the Carnival rides will be FREE from 6:00 am. till 8:00 a.m. Friday morning!
Don’t miss the Benefi t Concert on the football fi eld Friday night! We will be giving the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan all non-perishable

Every year the Swartz Creek Home-town Days Festival is presented in a different theme so the entertainment varies in keeping with the current theme. There is something in every way, shape and form for every age group. Sights, sounds, tastes and feel-ings stimulate every sensory percep-tion. Boring is not an option.
The Directors search for the best local talent to support our commu-nity. Groups that keep the audience tapping their feet, singing along and clapping in appreciation; the kind of music that soothes the soul.

Hometown Days is upon us already. Excitement is brewing, preparation is taking place and above all, the community of Swartz Creek is coming together once again to make sure that EVERYONE feels welcome here! To advertise what amazing local businesses we have, the Expo tent this year is sure to shine.
The Expo Tent will be visited by many people who wish to learn more about what Swartz Creek has to offer. What a great way to advertise your business for practically no cost! You can showcase all that your company has to offer while supporting your local community.
This year is our fourth annual silent auction event
being held right in the Expo tent. This will take place all weekend from June 1st thru June 3rd and give all area businesses the opportunity to advertise and display current products and services and to allow everyone to
see what you have to offer. If you are unable to obtain
a booth this year, please feel free to donate an auction item to
still have a presence in the fes-tival as well as to advertise your business.
If you would like to rent a space in the Expo tent for this year’s Swartz Creek Hometown Days festival or donate a silent auction item, please contact Deanna Krascell at (810)635-4574.
Hope to see you there!

As guests enjoy this year’s Home-town Days festivities they are but a stone’s throw away from one of the community’s proud accomplish-ments….the Veterans Memorial. In fact, it is a short walk from the Kickoff Dinner, the Homecoming Parade and the cluster of midway at-tractions.
One can see the proud fl ag fl y-ing over the Civic Center on Fortino Drive, a lighted fl ag pole, embed-ded granite star and a memorial wall containing past war veterans’ names. Rising above the shiny fl oor are bronze statues representing the
country’s armed forces. The Master Gardeners of Genesee

visitors, including groups of school children who come to learn about veterans and patriotism. Its value is both esthetical and educational.
The public has purchased bricks to pave the memorial and there is still a 30-foot portion left to sell. Bricks can be purchased in honor or memory of someone in increments of $50, $125 and $275 and there is a box of order forms in front of the Swartz Creek Post Offi ce.
Additional information about the Veterans Memorial project can be obtained by Calling Rick Henry (810) 635-7509.

What is the Michigan Vietnam Veteran Travel-ing Memorial?
It is a Memorial to the Men and Women from Michigan who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
It’s a message saying “We Will Not Forget” those who did not come home from Southeast Asia and are listed as a Prisoner of War or Missing in Action. It is a place for those who have served to come together in re-membrance of their fellow Soldier, Marine, Seaman, Airman, and Coast Guardsman. It is a place to honor those who have received the Flag as the words “on behalf of a proud and grateful nation,” have been spoken.
Whatever it may mean to you,
let this be a place of honor and healing...
The Offi cers and Members of Chapter #154 Vietnam Veterans of America are proud to sponsor this moving tribute saluting our Brothers and Sisters who have lost their lives and served in South-east Asia.
The wall will be set up on Fortino Drive across from the Car Show. Your invited to stop by, perhaps

The Hometown Days festival is al-ways chucked full of fun for all ages in four days that showcase local tal-ent and businesses, and imported entertainment from regional and national sources. This year, a benefi t concert Rockín 4 Charityî has been added, which will entertain while giving guests a chance to help two worthy causes, Carriage Town Min-
istries of Flint and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
On Friday night, the family-friendly show will begin at 7 p.m. at the Swartz Creek High School. The public can brown bag the admission price with a sack of usable clothing or toiletries for Carriage Town or three cans of non-perishable food for the Food Ban of Eastern Michi-gan. This will make it a win-win situ-ation for everyone. (Cash donations will be accepted with 50% going to the charities and 50% going to cover the cost of the concert.)
It takes a plethora of volunteers to make this celebration possible, says Brenda Huyck, Vice Chair of the Hometown Days Committee. When you add a new activity, it makes you even more appreciative of the per-sonal sacrifi ce by local people. There

Everyone remains congenial, no irate parents. There may be a few tears from the babies when it is meal-time and hot in the tent. There have been as many as 90-120 babies in the contest.
Babies love other babies without reservation. It is as though they are thinking, hey, someone my size! They will gladly share a hug, a toy, a bite of their cracker.
Babies grow and change quickly so the contest is divided into four age groups:
You Must Have Beena Beautiful Baby!
0-6 months. When every yawn, sneeze, blink, stretch, is a delight to watch. Every movement and expres-sion evoke a smile.
13-18 months. Moving from a toddle to a trot, challenging mother and father to keep up.
Vocabulary increases.19-24 months. Gaining more in-
dependence. Wanting to try and do more by themselves.
Trophies are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each cat-egory. Thanks to the sponsors, a prize is given to each baby entered

into the contest. Learning begins at birth and continues every second
of life. As the child grows and the circle of learning expands in preschool, day care, and before we know it they are in kindergarten, parents want to be sure their child receives quality education. This years Baby Con-test sponsor is The Swartz Creek Montessori & Child Development Center, Inc., owned and directed by Lisa Sturgess, is dedicated to providing just such a spe-cialized learning environment.
The contest is hosted by St. Mary’s Girls Challenge Club. Samantha and Angela Boshaw are the leaders of the 5th - 8th grade girls who volunteer at the con-test. They refl ect the skills learned from their mother, Cheryl, who accepted the position of Chairman pre-viously held by Patty Edmonds. Even after 4 years of helping with this event they still look forward to participating.

With a large portion of the Swartz Creek population over the age of 50, it is no wonder that the local Senior Citizen Center is the vibrant facility that it is. And, because the Home-town Days King and Queen are elect-ed through that agency, it makes the center an integral part of the annual celebration.
“Our members have a lot of fun,” says director Melinda Soper. “They can take classes for yoga, Tai Chi,
line dancing, round, square and ballroom dancing. They can join a bridge, pinochle, and euchre club, or take part in the more active Sassy Exercise or Zumba groups – almost anything of interest. Then there are members who like to knit, crochet, wood carve, paint, or join a book club.”
For several years, the Center has been overseeing the royal contest, providing ballots and voting center,
doing the judging and crowning of the king and queen. The 2012 King and Queen will be selected from the ballots placed in their ballot box and on-line voting. The crowning of the king and queen will take place at the Kickoff Dinner May 31 which offi -cially starts the Homecoming. Then the King and Queen will lead the pa-rade on June 2nd.

When one asks what is new at the 2012 Hometown Days, they may be remembering the out-standing elephant show of last year, the Elephant Encounter. It dazzled everyone, says Larry Bush, Chairman of this year’s festival. It’s been hard to match, but I think we’ve done it with a white tiger act and a world-trav-eled aerial thrill show.

The second headliner is the High Flying Pages Fam-ily Aerial and Animal Thrill Show consisting of 30 min-utes of non-stop height, thrill and laughter. The Pages family will perform a double catch fl ying trapeze act of fl ipping, twisting and catching 50 feet in the air, which was named the best fl ying trapeze act in the US, by win-ning international gold and silver circus medals. Their Russian Swing act is a giant human swing that catapults one person at a time 40 feet in the air. They are then caught by a canvas on which they slip and slide their way to the ground safely.

The youngest member of the Pages family, Mercedes, is best known for her Ballerina on Horseback act in which she rides and dances on two ponies. This year she is joined by The Riding Donnerts family, masters of equestrian riding and 5th generation circus perform-ers. They will display riding artistry, juggling and com-edy all on horseback. Mercedes has become famous with her spinning aluminum hula-hoop act which ends with a fi nale of several hula-hoops wrapped around her at one time.

Two 1/3 lb Burgers with fries & soft drinks & two Kids Meals (hamburger or hot dog)
with fries and drinks (milk or soft drink) - all for $20.
When you attend Swartz Creek Hometown Days you are focused on the many activities, food and people. Lots of people are moving around, enjoying themselves with friends and family, within a relatively small area. The planning to keep the event safe, clean, and of course to maximize the fun, begins months in advance.
Planning the “grounds” is Mark Kietzman’s job and has been for the last six years. Mark’s business, Insulmaster started in 1979 as an insulation company. Today Mark wears many hats and thrives on the variety. His responsibility for Home-town Days is simply - “Anything that touches the ground.” Tables, chairs, stages, generators and of course the tents and electricity are all super-vised by Mark.
“It’s like building a city out of nothing,” said Kietzman.
The largest tent is 60’ wide and 140’ long on Kincaid Field. A gen-
erator on site supplies power, and thanks to a donation of transform-ers from a local farmer, the current is stepped down to supply the tents. The eleven acres that Hometown Days takes over is donated by a lo-cal farmer as well, the Kincaid Fam-ily. Over the six years that Mark has been involved, they have cleared more land each year and expanded the grounds. Mike Cummings ofM. R. Maintenance of Swartz Creek is the assistant grounds maintenance director and with Mark they run a crew of about 40 volunteers that set up and maintain the grounds. Dur-ing the weekend a crew of three ro-tates through emptying trash cans and replacing plastic bags. About 40 yards of trash is collected over the four day weekend. They do the best they can to recycle some of that.
Mark and his wife Susie Kietzman park their trailer on the grounds on Memorial Weekend and live on the
Behind The
Scenesgrounds for the week. Susie is the volunteer director, so they are both busy making things happen.
“Unfortunately I’ve never had the time to enjoy the rides or the many entertainment opportunities availal-able during the Festival,” said Mark.
It is a constant whirl of activity to bring it all together.
“Amazing how you can bring a whole city together and make it work and have a good time doing it,” said Mark.
Mark is proud to be able to take great care of the vendors for Home-town Days.
“One call does it all,” said Mark. “Vendors can trust that we will take care of them.”
So, with the vendors taken care of, the vendors can focus on mak-ing your experience at Hometown Days the best possible. Come check it out!

The Grand Marshalls for the Hometown Days Parade will be representatives from each branch of the military. Show your sup-port for our troops as they lead the parade. A parade brings out the spirit of the community as you see the dance studios, pom squads, politicians, service clubs, youth organizations and of course the Drag-on Marching Band. Everyone has a
favorite in the parade, but they are all cheered on as they make their way from the High School, down Miller Road and up Fredrick Street.
Saturday at noon is when you want to have your spot picked out along the parade route. Lineup for the parade is on Cappy Lane at 10:30 a.m.
Sharp Funeral Home is the spon-sor of the Hometown Days Parade.

Wanda Cummings is the Swartz Creek Hometown Days director that organizes the participants and vol-unteers make the parade happen.

Each year, the Hometown Pa-rade includes some four-legged walkers who get lots of smiles from all ages, and in the Pet Awareness & Adoption Tent,
you will fi nd pets available for adop-tion.
PAWS volunteers will be walking in the parade on Saturday. They are active in Swartz Creek and pledged to buy food for a year for the Police K-9 Offi cer, Ike.
That’s not the fi rst time the PAWS signature has been seen around the community. Since 1997 they have been rescuing and rehabilitating pets and adopting them into loving homes (at businesses like PetSmart,
PetCo and Family Farm & Home). They adopt out over 300 dogs and cats a year. (formerly called Last Chance Rescue, name changed 2011)
Animals come to PAWS from a va-riety of circumstances and are quar-antine at their Swartz Creek farm. From there the animals are fostered in homes of volunteers who care for them until they are adopted. This enables PAWS to get acquainted with the animal and pass on their insight to prospective owners.
Their philosophy is to adopt dogs to families to live indoors as a fam-ily member. Follow-ups are made fol-lowing adoptions and a return policy is in place.
The area’s economic downturn has meant additional pressure on PAWS, says President Glenda Beatty. Both because of the sheer numbers - and
PAWS Animal Rescue: Helping Pets and People
the fact that animals now come to us with more medical problems. Adop-tion fees do not cover our expenses and we rely on volunteer help and private donations to stay afl oat.
Beatty says that rewards come when unwanted animals become part of a loving family or an abused animal is turned around to be a service dog. All animals are spayed/neutered prior to adoption and are micro chipped and up to date on shots and worming. Heartworm cases are also treated.
PAWS Animal Rescue has a critical need for volunteer holding homes, funds for their spay/neuter fund and an ongoing need for quality dog food. For additional information leave a message on (810)635-9649 or send donations to PO Box 87, Swartz Creek, MI 48473. Their Web site is www.pawsanimalrescue.net
