1 Swanbourne Village News Newsletter No. 136 April – May 2017 IMPORTANT NEWS! - A NEW AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR has been secured for Swanbourne by Dr Caroline Walker This public access defibrillator and a cabinet have been kindly funded in full through a government funded BHF grant. The defibrillator will be located on the outside of the Village Hall to be accessible 24 hours a day. The defibrillator is a portable device that can be used by a member of the public to help restart the heart when someone has a cardiac arrest. This is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body and they lose consciousness almost at once. For every minute that passes without defibrillation and CPR, chances of survival decrease by around ten per cent. It’s therefore imperative local people know both of these vital steps to help someone in an emergency. Several FREE training sessions will be held to train as many locals as possible on CPR and the use of the defibrillator. Thanks to Ian Jones, a community paramedic, the first of these will be in the Village Hall at 10am on Saturday April 1 st with further dates to follow. Look out for posters around the village and emails. Each session will be limited to about 20 attendees to allow for adequate hands-on practice. If you are interested in attending please let Caroline Walker know on [email protected]or 07973 737054. Don't worry if you can’t attend this session, getting as many people trained in the local community as possible is really important so will we run as many sessions as are needed. Over 30,000 cardiac arrests happen out of hospital in the UK every year but currently less than one in ten survive. The BHF want to create a Nation of Lifesavers in a bid to boost these shocking survival rates. The charity believes defibrillators should be made more accessible and recognisable to the public. We are really pleased that with this facility will now be available in Swanbourne. YOUR FREE AED training courses:- Sat. 1 st April - Ian Jones (community liaison paramedic) 10am, V. Hall. April – Dr Caroline Walker or Dr Jon Walker (dates to be circulated) May - Dr Caroline Walker or Dr Jon Walker (dates to be circulated)

As many members of the village community already know, we are continuing to undertake a number of building projects on the school site - this has unfortunately attracted some unwanted attention from the public with evidence of intrusion onto the building site. In addition we still have some members of the general public who feel it is their right to walk their dogs on the school grounds - this not only potentially compromises our duty of care to the pupils, but could also be misconstrued as a breach of the many safeguarding regulations we operate under and lastly also leaves faeces where the children play. Only school employees are allowed to walk their dogs on the site as each has been specifically briefed. As a result we are increasing security (CCTV, etc) across the site and have worked closely with the local Police team who are advising us and who will also be stepping up patrols. We naturally feel sad that we have been forced to take these measures and we are sure you will understand that the safety and well-being of the children is paramount in all that we do. Paul Jochimsen

Eighth in our Series of WW1 Soldier Biographies – John Henry Leonard
Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, 1/1 Bucks Battalion 1898 – 1918 John Leonard was the younger brother of George Thomas Leonard who also lost his life during the war. He was born in Mursley in the Spring of 1898, the son of Thomas Leonard, a shepherd, and his wife Emily (nee Boughton). They had four other children, Sarah Emma (1888), Rose Annie (1891), Jim (1894) and George Thomas (1896). At the time of the 1901 census, he was aged three and living with his parents and siblings Rose and Jim in Mursley. By 1911, the family had moved to Swanbourne and were living in Nearton End, probably number 10 at the bottom of the New Walk. He was aged 13 and still at school. He enlisted for the army in Aylesbury, joining the local regiment, but we don’t know exactly when. On 4th August, 1914, the 1/1st Buckinghamshire Battalion Territorial Force were stationed at Aylesbury as part of the South Midland brigade of the South Midland Division, and then moved to Writtle near Chelmsford. They mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne on 30th March, 1915. In May 1915, the formation became the 145th Brigade of the 48th Division which engaged in various actions on the Western Front. In 1916, the Division was engaged in various actions as part of the Battle for the Somme. In 1917, as the Germans retreated to the Hindenburg Line, the Division continued to join in battles in the area around Ypres. Then in November 1917, it was deployed to Italy to stiffen Italian resistance to enemy attack after a recent disaster at Caporetto. In 1918, the Division held the front line sector at the Montello and then moved west, to the Asiago sector and then engaged in fighting on the Asiago Plateau and The Battle of the Vittoria Veneto in Val d'Assa. It seems likely that it was during this latter battle (fought between 24th October and 3rd November, 1918) that John lost his life on 1st November, 1918. The battle marked the end of the First World War on the Italian front and secured the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Linda and Ken

Derby's Place Hello Swanbourne! It is odd to be writing in my own voice and without Derby's waggy guidance. We are so lucky to live in Swanbourne - I am incredibly grateful for all the love and support, and by how much you have all cared. Thank you. Derby was a remarkable dog and I was incredibly blessed to have him, even for such a relatively short time. There will never be another Derby, but I really do need a new four legged helper (being completely reliant on other people and having to ask for help all the time are not my favourite things!). With a bit of luck and a prevailing wind, by the time you read this I will be on my residential training (yup, they train the people part of the partnership too!) with my new dog, and be bringing her - yes, a girl this time - home around Easter time. I am keeping everything crossed and trying very hard not to get too excited! In the meantime I have a date for you to save - Swanbourne's next Wag and Walk will be on the morning of Sunday 23rd April. Please do come along - with or without a canine companion, and to walk or just to drop in for bacon butties (they are delicious, with no skimping on the bacon!) and a cup of tea or coffee. As Derby himself said, Swanbourne will always be 'Derby's Place' but I really hope that by the time the next Newsletter comes out there will be a new kid on the block :) Big thank you again - Swanbourne, you rock! Jo
PS I am not able to show you a picture of her, or tell you what her name is yet, but these are her footprints - see if you can guess what she will look like!
