Future AmI Information Society
• Computers are embedded in everyday objects and in the environment (ubiquity, pervasiveness)
• They are embedded in a seamless wireless communication infrastructure
• There is no longer one user per computer but intelligence is used by many
There are not only chances but also risks associated with the AmI Information SocietyThere are not only chances but also risks
associated with the AmI Information Society

Background
In pervasive environments, privacy, identity and security become increasingly important and visible as problems for users:
• Pervasive networks of interconnected devices and communications will mean that the sheer quantity of personal information in circulation will increase greatly;
• The introduction of perceptual and biometric interfaces for certain applications, will transform the qualitative nature of personal information in circulation;
• In order to personalise services, ubiquitous networks will require the tracking and collection of significant portions of users’ everyday activities.

ISTAG vision: Social and technological factors driving AmI
People or User-Centric Technology User-friendliness ( GUI)
Efficient and context-aware, distributed services
User empowerment
Support of human actions ( people adapting to machines)
Pro-active but under control
ISTAG’s Vision puts a huge claim on being ‘non-technological’ But recurrent ideological claims always promise a better & happier life
If it remains at the level of discourse, nothing new
Different is that the claims are presented as design & development guidelines!

Why consider risks anyway? Why not think positively?
Little emphasis on ambivalence of Ambient Intelligence Scenarios depict typical successful users in a perfect world struggle, uncertainties,
irregularities, malfunctions…
Normative claims Real technological development
Disappearing computing taken for grantedness (physical versus mental)
Invisible computing Human-centred computing
Blurring of the boundaries between artefact and function
Ownership, usage, domestication
Little consideration of power relations between actors
Difference between intended and real use
Crucial: How can the privacy, identity and security of the AmI user be protected – before unwanted consequences occur?

Objectives
1. To identify the social, legal, organisational and ethical implications related to privacy, anonymity, manipulation and control, and identity.
2. To create and analyse “dark” scenarios on AmI that highlight and detail the key socio-economic, legal, technological and ethical risks related to identity, privacy and security.
3. To identify research and policy options on how to build into Information Society services and systems the safeguards and privacy enhancing mechanisms needed to ensure user control, user acceptance and enforceability of policy in an accessible manner.

Step 1: State-of-the-art-overview
1. Review of existing literature (scenarios, foresight studies, roadmaps) and projects on relevant aspects of Ambient Intelligence - comparison of EU vs. US/Japan
2. Describe prospects and benefits of AmI in important fields of applications and identify important issues re. privacy, identify, security
• Home • Office Work
• Health • Learning
• Shopping and commerce • Emergency Management
• Mobility, Travel, Nomadic
3. Discussion and validation of results at first workshop with external expertsIdentification of main factors for scenarios development
4. Results: Analysis of “The Brave New World of Ambient Intelligence” Deliverable 1 available at http://swami.jrc.es

Step 2: Development of “Dark Scenarios”
1. Objective:
• Identify important things that can go wrong with regard to identity, privacy, security,
• Discuss social, economic, legal, technological and ethical implications
2. Dark scenarios = Undesirable scenarios
• Identification of main axes for scenario in expert workshop (Individual vs. Society, Private vs. Public Sphere)
• Development of four scenarios along two axes
• Cross-references to research projects and real-world events
• Identification of legal implications
3. Result: Characterisation of “The dark side of Ambient Intelligence“Deliverable 2 available at http://swami.jrc.esPresentation by Ioannis Maghiros on Wednesday morning.

Step 3: Building policy options
1. Objective: Formulate and consider the possibilities to overcome the problematic aspects of Ambient Intelligence
2. Compare bright and dark side of AmI: Identify and classify threats and vulnerabilities of an Ambient Intelligence Society
3. Identify and assess the feasibility of safeguards
4. Discuss and prioritise safeguards with experts, stakeholders and policy makers Purpose of the SWAMI conference

1. Raise awareness to the need to mitigate unwanted consequences of ambient intelligence as an emerging technology before these occur
2. Take different perspectives of the problem into account
3. Propose and discuss appropriate safeguards with experts, stakeholders and policy makers on the European level
4. Debate the need for action
What do we want to achieve today and tomorrow?
