Unemployment is at seven-year low, wiGermany the only EU nation doing bettTHE new government has been given somegood news on the jobs front this week, withunemployment continuing to fall and a re-cord number of people in work.
Official figures showed that unemploymenthas dipped to a seven-year low of 1.83 million, although the latest quarterly cut of 35,000was the smallest for almost two years.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker’sAllowance fell by 12,600 in April to 763,000,the 30th consecutive monthly reduction.
Employment continued to rise, up by 202,000in the three months to March to more than31 million, the highest since records beganin 1971.
The UK now has an employment rate of 73.5per cent, also a record, although for men thefigure is even higher at 78.4 per cent.
The claimant count has fallen by around350,000 in the past year, although last month’s12,600 was the smallest fall since March 2013.
Average earnings increased by 1.9 per centin the year to March, up by 0.2 percentagepoints on the previous month, giving an aver-age weekly wage of £489.
Other data from the Office for NationalStatistics showed that almost nine millionpeople were classed as economically inactive, including students, those looking after a fam-ily, on long-term sick leave or who had givenup looking for work.
The total was down by 69,000 over thequarter, but little changed compared with ayear ago.
Long-term unemployment has fallen, downby 50,000 for those out of work for more thana year to 588,000.
The UK’s unemployment rate of 5.5 per centis the second-lowest in the European Unionafter Germany: the highest rates are 25 percent in Greece and 23 per cent in Spain.
The number of job vacancies has increasedby 9,000 to 733,000, almost 100,000 more than ayear ago. A total of 110,000 people were maderedundant in the quarter to March, 16,000fewer than a yearago.
The number of people workingpart-time becausethey cannot finda full-time job in-creased by 8,000 inthe latest quarterto 1.32 million.
ChancellorGeorge Osbornesaid: “We seefurther proof theplan is working, with unemploy-
ment falling, record numbers of people inwork and confirmation that regular paypackets are growing at their fastest in fouryears, putting more in people’s pockets andstretching family budgets that bit further.
“With full-time employees making upnearly all of the increase in employment overthe past year, this shows we are on the way toour goal of full employment.”
James Sproule, chief economist at theInstitute of Directors, said: “These figuresare welcome evidence that British businessescontinue to power th e economic re covery.
“It is particularly encouraging to see an-other period of wages rising above inflation.During the downturn, preserving jobs wasthe priority for employers and employees. Now that the economy is growing, employeesare naturally looking for real-terms increasesin their salaries.
“IoD members tell us that they are ableto increase wages because of improvedcorporate performance, meaning these wage
increases are sustainable. This all pointsto growingconsumer
confidence and associated spending that doesnot undermine UK competitiveness.”
TUC general secretary Frances O’Gradysaid: “Behind the headline figures, we stilldon’t have enough of the well-paid secure jobs that people want for themselves andtheir children. Under-employment has barelyrecovered, leaving many families with fewerhours of work than they need. And youngpeople are hardly sharing in the recovery, with youth unemployment still far higherthan before the crisis.
“Pay packets are a bit bigger, but real payrises remain dependent on unusually lowinflation. Without a strongerfoundation for sustainablepay growth, the living stand-ards of families will remainat risk.”
David Kern, chief econo-mist at the British Chambersof Commerce, said: “Thelatest figures confirm thatthe labour market remains a
major source of strength for the U – with record numbers of people iunemployment continuing to fall.
“However, there are some areasthe quarterly fall in unemploymesmallest since the summer 2013 anunemployment rate is still almostas high as the national average. Ittherefore be premature for the broity in the latest jobs figures to leadincrease in interest rates. Businea continued period of stability in deliver the growth and prosperitywant to see.”
Rachel Reeves, shadow work andsecretary, said: “The fall in overalployment is welcome. However, thment needs to do much more to taunemployment.
“The government must act to givpeople the chance to earn a livingquality apprenticeships and mustthousands left behind in the last fi
The figures showed that more ththe increase in employment over year related to workers from counside the UK.
In the year to March 2015, numbUK national workers rose by 294,03.09 million, while numbers of UKworking in the country increasedto 27.91 million, according to the O
