The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2015 is the same as last year, “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” This theme is repeated to emphasize the importance that it encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities—small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. The logo features a swirl of colors interacting around a

cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. The vibrancy of the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo portray the inner-connectivity and community life that are present in our Catholic schools. This is symbolic of what is taking place at St. Mary Elementary and Jr. High where high academic standards and Catholic identity are promoted. The center of the logo is, a cross representing the faith that underscores all Catholic education. We are most proud of our physically and emotionally safe learning environment which promotes a greater degree of success for our students. When students feel safe they become emotionally invested in the learning environment. Careful attention to the manner in which we treat our students and by establishing an environment free of hostility and threats better equips our students for success in the classroom and eventually in their adult lives. Prayer is an integral part of our faith life. We begin each day in prayer and celebrate a school Mass weekly. Our school is devoted to the mission of the Church given to us by Jesus Christ Himself. The sacraments - in which we encounter Jesus and receive transforming graces - are the center of our effort to develop the character of Christ in our children and ourselves. Our children respond to the needs of the community each year by doing service work or collecting for those in need; teaching our young people how to do and give to others. They learn and live values of compassion and caring and respecting all human beings. Academically our students perform one, two, three, and as much as four grade levels higher than the grade they are presently in when taking the standardized Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Overall they test at least one grade level higher across the curriculum. If we may boast, like proud parents; we have had many salutatorians and valedictorians, and a couple years ago had both at Newman High School from our school. This past year, 4 of the 7 state scholars at Newman were from our school. Catholic schools provide good things for students and families—high expectations and daily experience of faith. There is no better way to invest in a child’s future—or the future of our world. In most parts of the country a Catholic education is not without some cost. But there isn’t a better investment in the future than to invest in the education of a child. Because of that, our mission is to educate the entire child and that is possible by offering a full curriculum including visual and performing arts, computer and physical education. Extracurricular offerings include band and choir. An excellent sports program with basketball, volleyball and track, for boys and girls is open to students in 4th through 8th grade. Afterschool care is available as well as a hot lunch program. Bus service accommodations are arranged through our cooperating school district, as well as a bus that transports students from Oregon and Grand Detour. Additionally a Title I program provides reading enrichment, a school counselor is available. Accelerated Reading, Math Counts, Scholastic Bowl, Leo Club, and Spanish, as well as more augment academic excellence through 8th grade. Come and see for yourself….our pre 3, pre 4, pre k, all day kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms. CALL TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT AND TOUR OUR SCHOOL. WE WELCOME YOUR VISIT.

Junior High students visit area nursing homes and Christmas carol.

DIXON, ILLINOIS 61021WWW.STANNESCHOOLDIXON.ORG

St. Anne School joins with many other Catholic Schools across the country to celebrate the benefits of a Catholic Education in its annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week. In its 51st year of offering quality Catholic Education to the Dixon Community, St. Anne School is proud of its many achievements and looks to continue this effort for many years. The three fold center of its efforts are the teaching and living of the Catholic Faith, the building of community among its students, staff, and families, and the giving of service to the local community as well as the greater community of the world. ! At. St. Anne School, one of the main goals is the teaching of the Catholic Faith and this is done in various ways. Daily lessons in the Catholic Faith are taught to students, but this is not enough. The living of this Faith is stressed daily as students are taught to respect each other in their classrooms, on the playground, as well as in their homes. They also learn that they are not alone when it comes to the living of their Faith. They have the help of Jesus through prayer and example as they study the Gospels and learn to be like Jesus. Learning about the Faith of non-Catholic students who attend the school is another opportunity to see that we are one in striving to love God and live in God’s ways. The celebration of the Eucharist each week brings the school community together and participation as lectors, servers, song leaders and in other liturgical roles prepares the students for a deeper participation in their Faith as they grow older. Celebration of the Eucharist also leads to the second aspect of a Catholic Education—Community Building. In the Eucharist students learn that we are one with Christ and this oneness leads us to work together in many ways for the good of all. Teachers at St. Anne School work to insure a caring environment for each person. Students assist the school community with various tasks and are called upon to assist the parish community at times through Mass Service, prayer times, or just wrapping silverware for a parish event. Food drives, toy collections, bake sales, and fun days provide a variety of activities that enable students to look to the needs of others in the community outside of the school while enjoying good times within their own class activities. Parents, too, play an important role in the community aspect of Catholic Education. Besides their fundraising activities, parents show a great deal of support to the teaching and administrative staff and work with them to support the many programs that St. Anne School offers. Whether driving for a field trip, volunteering to teach a special class for a group of students, explaining a career, serving lunch, or helping in the school library, parents show their youngsters that involvement in St. Anne School is vital to its successful operation. Just as Faith Development and Community Building are intertwined, so is the service aspect. Students are taught that Jesus calls us to serve others and in school activities and parent activities call all to this service, but more is required. As students study the academic subjects, they learn of the need to use this knowledge for the good of others. The modern use of technology enables the students to learn about the world and its needs, and they are encouraged to look to the future and prepare themselves to live and work in ways that will build a better world for all. For a St. Anne Student, Faith, Community, and Service are all rolled up in one on a school day. Prayer starts a busy day that is followed by classes in Religion, English/Reading, Social Studies, Science, Math, Handwriting, and Spelling. Each day brings a special class such as Music, Art, Physical Education, Spanish and Computer and to energize students for all this hard work, a great lunch program is offered every day, with some recess thrown in to expend that excess energy. Special classers once a week also provide courses such as basket weaving, Lego Building, cooking, cartooning, world traveling and a host of others that allow students to explore new skills and unknown talents. The use of technology in the form of iPads enables the students to explore topics outside of the usual textbook generated learning and makes book bags a little lighter, too. As the day begins with prayer, it also ends with prayer as students are sent home to continue their learning activities. From the youngest three-year-old to the oldest Eighth Grader, St. Anne School is the place where excellence begins—in Faith, in Community and in Service to others. This years theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2015 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic Education. First, schools are communities ~ small communities in their own right, but also members of the larger communities of parish, town, state and nation. They are, in the first place, communities of faith, where children are openly taught about God, where God is worshipped regularly, and where students and faculty put their faith into practice on a daily basis. Secondly, Catholic schools exist to pass on knowledge ~ not just the practical knowledge of reading, writing, math and so on, but also knowledge of God and truth, which is our spiritual heritage as Catholics. Finally, Catholic schools are communities of service, places where hepling one another and aiding the needy are the normal way of living life. Students grow in their faith at St. Mary’s School. The school takes its responsibility in sharing and developing our Catholic faith, traditions and values seriously. The students are prepared for the sacraments, taught to love one another and are prepared to live as active contributing members of the church and responsible members of society. Students attend Mass weekly, and each class is responsible for preparing and delivering the readings at Mass. Prayer is an integral part of the day. Each morning there are readings and prayers that are offered for those in need, as well as prayers at lunch time and the end of the day. St. Mary’s is proud to have children of various faiths and denominations attend the school. St. Mary’s is fully accredited by the State of Illinois, and the teaching staff consists of fully-certified teachers. Although their pay scale and benefits are not what draw the teachers to St. Mary’s, more important things do! The staff at St. Mary’s believes that their role as a teacher and mentor is a calling. Being a part of St. Mary’s is a ministry, and the staff feels its responsibility is to develop the whole child ~ spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Each year students in grades 3, 5, and 7 are administered the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The following results are grade equivalents from this years (Sept. 2014) test.: Grade 3 Composite 3.7 (Grade 3/7th month) Grade 5 Composite 7.2 (Grade 7/2nd month) Grade 7 Composite 9.1 (Grade 9/1st month) The longer students remain at St. Mary’s, the greater their grade equivalent. Along with a strong academic program, the school offers art, physical education, and computer class. After-school art lessons are available along with Math Club. Extra-curricular activities include football, cross country, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and track. Students participate in Math Counts, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council and Accelerated Reader. Students are taught the true meaning of stewardship and service to others. Students participate in various activities that help our parishes and community ~ P.T. Penguin for the United Way, Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive for the township, food drives and non-perishable goods drives for St. Vincent DePaul, making Christmas shoe box gifts for area nursing homes, writing cards and notes to people who are in need of a smile and a prayer. The Kindergarten class nickname is “Mary’s Angels” who send encouraging cards to those who are ill. The character building program that has been implemented at St. Mary’s was designed by teachers at the school. P.E.A.C.E. stands for Politeness, Effort, Attitude, Compassion, and Example. Children have the opportunity each and every day to earn an award. Please come by and see what is going on at St. Mary’s School in our Pre-K through 8th grade program and be a part of our growing family. Call to set up an appointment and tour our school. All are welcome.
