The Bluebird of Happiness

Tree Swallow, Chipping Sparrow, American Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Blue Jay,

American Crow, Chimney Swift, Canada Goose, White-breasted Nuthatch, and…Eastern

Bluebird! Those are the first birds on my new “yard list.” For a hard-core birder like me,

new locations mean new birds. While the habitat and geography are not significantly

different from Massachusetts, and thus I won’t be expecting new species for my “life

list,” every bird is new to me in the new location. Sure, it is not much different from

counting license plates of different states in order to occupy the time on a long trip, but it

is also more than that. It is a way to connect to a location and stay aware of the changes.

It is a perspective, a mentality, a practice.

It is also a decent metaphor for the way I feel about this new beginning with all of you

here at Old South. I approach this with a perspective of anticipation. Since God is not

typically in the business of disclosing details, I don’t know quite what to expect…and

while that is a bit scary, it is also exciting. The sky is the limit! And that leads to my

mentality, which is one of hopefulness. Though I forget who said it, I agree with the

person who said, “the future is as bright as the promises of God.” And so it is my practice

to always look for those signs of God’s presence and movement in the constant change

that is life. There is something new in each day, if you only have eyes to see and ears to

hear.

Before leaving Brimfield, a friend and leader in the community wished me the blessing,

“May the Bluebird of Happiness lay an egg in your beer!” While neither of us was quite

sure how that is a good thing, the sentiment was genuine and so I carried that with me

when just days later I saw an Eastern Bluebird in my Brimfield yard for the first time

after living there 12 years. So the chatter of two Bluebirds flying through my yard in

Mentor this week could simply have been one of those happy coincidences (which is

simply a miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous), but I’d like to think that it

was our playful God reminding me to keep looking up, paying attention to the many

ways that the Holy Spirit will be leading us. What do you say, should we follow

wherever the Spirit leads? I’m game, how about you?

It’s hard to believe another sum-

mer has come and gone. We had

our 4th annual Peace Camp in July and it was another great success. This year our theme was Friend-

ship. We learned about the true meaning of friendship, using our hearts, brains, eyes and having cour-

age. On Friday we invited our friends to come have a friendship fun day, with a bounce house, water

bottle rocket, games and ice cream. A great time was had by all and we are already looking forward to

next summer. Thank you all who donated money, time and talent, it does not go unnoticed.

Sunday September 7 is our first Sunday back in the Sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. It will also be our Blessing

of the Backpacks. Teachers, students of all sorts are invited to bring their backpacks to worship to be

blessed for the 2014-2015 school year. Please let me know who will be participating as soon as possible.

2014-2015 Sunday School

The CE ministry has taken the time to pick out different curriculum to use for the 1-5th grade classes.

We have decided on Whirl by Sparkhouse. This is a lectionary based curriculum that has lessons that

go along with the church year. We are excited to give this a try, and we hope your children enjoy it!

As we did last year, the ages and grades will be split up as follows;

Nursery- Birth-Age 2; Preschool- Age 3-Kindergarten; 1st-3rd grades; 4th-5th grades; 6-12th grades

It is so hard to believe that it is the first of

September already! We have all had a

busy summer, especially at Old South

Church where we are happy to welcome

our new Pastor, Ian Lynch and his family, Gina and Angel. Everyone is looking forward to this new

chapter in the history of Old South.

The Deacons would like to thank all who volunteered this summer to help with Dell set up. It is always

a special time when we can enjoy the summers in our beautiful Dell and without your help, it would

not be possible. Also, thank you to those who volunteered their musical talents this summer to enhance

our services and give our choir well deserved time off.

Now that summer is over remember that the deacons are always looking for a few good young men

and women to serve as acolytes. If there is a young person in your family who may be interested please

talk to Michael Gressley after church to arrange a short training session. Also, any upcoming event or

person you would like to honor contact Patty in the office to donate flowers for the church alter.

Welcome again to Pastor Ian and his family. We are all looking forward to our years together.

The Missions Ministry met on August 4th.

Elaine Spondike reported that the Pride

Parade was a great success. 51 people

from Old South participated either by walking or riding the flat bed trailer. Acknowledgement was

given to Don and Mary Jones and Earl Bush for organizing the group from Old South. Several peo-

ple want to participate next year. Don Jones is offering the flat bed trailer for next year. Our birthday

ministry continues with Janet Kovach sending cards. Barbara Bodmer spoke about the success of the

Lake County Church Network auction. About $10,000 was raised, which will help LCCN with oper-

ating expenses. The Women’s Fellowship contributed a basket for the auction. Carla Wilson is going

to attend a meeting on August 13th for CROP at Willoughby Methodist Church. She will find out

more information about their walk to raise money and awareness about ending hunger. The walk

will take place October 5th. Sue Clark offered to be the liaison for the Missions Ministry for the

church website and Facebook page. This will be a way to reach the members who use social media

with events and other information about the Missions Ministry.

We have been very busy the last 5 or 6

weeks. There have been 2 memorials, 1 re-

ception and 1 brunch organized and

served during that time. We were also re-

quested to serve a dinner for Pearl Branson's 90th birthday. (Pearl is Wanda Steudel's mother.)

THANK YOU!!!, THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! to all the cooks, dishwashers, table setter-

uppers, bakers, table taker-downers, flower fixers, and general muscle for all your help!! We could

not have comforted the grieving, honored a much loved mother, or feted both Pastor Wally and

Reverend Ian and his family without the help of you all. Your time and efforts are deeply appreci-

ated.

On another note, Bazaar will soon be upon us. There will be a craft night on Aug. 27th and Sept.

24th at 7:00 in the Anchor Lamp Room. Bring your scissors and join us. We have a lot of fun. There

will also be scissors candy making in Oct. Isn't if amazing how much work we get done amid the

chatter and fellowship? Peggy Kranz will be picking up the rugs from the weaver this week and

many of us have been busy with projects both at home and at Colonial Crafters. We sincerely hope

that some of you newer ladies will join us and bring your new ideas and energies to our group as

we strive to serve our church and the many groups and charities that we reach out to.

The Women's Fellowship meetings are the last Monday of each month in the Anchor Lamp Room.

We begin at 6:30 and are usually done in an hour. Come, join in, and bring the talents and skills

God has given you and share them in fellowship with us. All the female members of Old South are

automatically members of this group (we do occasionally recruit our gentlemen as well). We are a

vital part of the service and love in this church and would enjoy having you as part of our group.

On behalf of Women's fellowship and Colonial Crafters, We welcome Rev. Ian, Gina, Angel and

Pat to our church family. We are happy to have you here.

Blessings on you all. Enjoy what's left of summer.

Nancy Romelfanger, Pres.

Chime Choir Our fall season of chime ringing will start soon.

Now is a good time to add some new members.

If you are ten years old (or almost ten) and would

like to ring chimes, please talk to Margaret Remp.

Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evening from

6:30 to 7:30. If you don't read music yet, don't worry.

I can teach you. The MOST important thing is

that you attend rehearsals.

I hope to hear from those who are interested.

Music in Worship

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,

Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Psalm 100:1-2

We all worship God in our own way. We may say “amen” when something resonates

with us, we may raise our hands in praise, or we may clap after music during worship.

For some, clapping is a way to offer praise. If this is how you offer praise or support, then

you should continue. The musicians are using their gifts to enhance the worship experi-

ence; and it is their offering of praise to God. They are, as the Psalmist says, “coming be-

fore Him with joyful songs.”

As a musician, I assure you that it means more to us when you take the time to come tell

us that a particular musical offering really touched you or spoke to you, than to applaud

following our part in worship. Though it may feel as if we are, we are not performers in

the service, we are striving to add to the message of worship. This also applies to musi-

cians of all ages. We are always proud of the contributions that our youth make during

worship, but they too are a part of the message of worship. I encourage you to interact

with the kids following worship and tell them how much their music added to your wor-

ship experience.

This is not a “how to” respond to music in a worship service, but rather as Music Director

at Old South I wanted to share with you how musicians view our part in worship. It is our

unique way of offering praise to God. We hope that our offering adds to your experience

in worship as well. If clapping is the way that you choose to express yourself, I encourage

you to continue your praise in your own way. The choir will be back soon and we look

forward to praising God in worship with you!

The Children Come

Renowned Presbyterian hymn-writer Carolyn Winfrey Gillette has penned a new hymn ― “The

Children Come” ― in response to the flood of unaccompanied children from Central America

across the U.S. border in recent months due to escalating violence of all kinds.

The new hymn, sung to the familiar tune to “Be Still, My Soul,” has been made available free for

use in local churches. “Please share this new hymn with pastors and church musicians who might

want to use it in worship, as well as to encourage Christians to respond to this crisis,” Gillette said

in an email to Presbyterian News Service.

FAQ’s

Who are these “unaccompanied immigrant

children”? How do they end up in the United

States alone?

Unaccompanied immigrant children are mi-

nors under the age of 18 who cross the U.S.

borders alone, without their parents or care-

givers. They come to the United States from all

corners of the world, but the most recent in-

flux of children has primarily been from Cen-

tral America — Guatemala, Honduras, and El

Salvador. They travel by foot over the border

or as stowaways on freight trains. Sometimes

they are victims of human trafficking, some-

times they must pay to get to safety, and

sometimes they just travel alone. The number

of children making this perilous journey has

grown astronomically.

Why are they fleeing their home countries?

There are several main push factors: faltering

economies, large youth population, and rising

crime and gang activity. There are also pull

factors: the desire for family reunification and

changing operations of smuggling networks.

How old are these children?

They are usually in their early teens, but can be as young as three. They are both boys and girls.

The Children Come

by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette

The Children come, not sure where they are going;

Some little ones have seen their siblings die.

They’ve traveled north - a tide that keeps on growing,

A stream of life beneath the desert sky.

Their welcome here? Detention, overflowing.

O Lord of love, now hear your children cry!

The children come in search of something better;

They’ve traveled here with nothing in their hands.

On one boy’s belt, a number carved in leather

Leads to a phone, a brother here, a plan.

They come alone - or sometimes band together;

They bring a plea that we will understand.

O Christ our Lord, you welcomed in the stranger;

You blessed the children, telling them to stay.

Be in the desert, with the tired and injured;

Be at the border where they are afraid.

Be on each bus where children sense the danger,

As angry crowds are shouting, “Go away!”

God, let each one know justice, peace, and welcome -

And may your gift of mercy start with me.

For unto such as these belongs your kingdom,

And in each child, it is your face we see.

May we, your church, respond in truth and action,

And with you, Lord, say “Let them come to me.”

Cross Blood Drive

Wednesday, September 3

2:00-7:00pm

Old South UCC

Donation time is about one hour.

This drive is open to the entire community. Bring a friend and save lives together

For questions about the donation process, call 1-800-give life.

Walk-ins are always welcome, but scheduling an appointment helps minimize waiting

times. Go to www.redcrossblood.org and in the upper right corner, find our drive by en-

tering the zip code 44094. On the calendar, find Old South and click on “Make an ap-

pointment.”

If you have any questions, contact Mary Jones for assistance.

Scrip Facts Scrip shopping cards are gift cards which are avail-

able through the church. Why purchase them

through the church instead of at a local store? Be-

cause these merchants offer a discount to the church

for every purchase made! When you purchase a $50

card, you pay $50 and can go to the merchant and

get $50 of merchandise. But the merchant has do-

nated 5% to 15% of that $50 to the church! Many of your favorite merchants offer this fund-

raising opportunity: pharmacies, restaurants, grocery stores, department stores, home im-

provement, health and beauty, sporting goods, electronics, entertainment, to name a few. Or-

ders are placed every 2 weeks. Order on a paper form or online at www.ShopWithScrip.com.

Pay for your order with cash, check, direct payment from your checking account or with a

credit card. For your convenience, the church keeps a supply of Giant Eagle and Heinen’s

cards so they are available for immediate purchase every Sunday.

As of August 15, 26 families have purchased scrip at least one time this year which has raised

$1791.63 for Old South. The budgeted amount for scrip income is $3000 this year. Will you

join those 26 families so that we exceed that goal for 2014? This fundraiser doesn’t ask you to

buy something you don’t need or want, but just make the purchases you normally make.

Scrip order dates this month are September 7 and 21.
