What is sustainability?Sustainability "the ability to sustain"Sustainability could be defined as “an ability orcapacity of something to be maintained or tosustain itself.”

Natural Resources?Natural resource is anything that people canuse which comes from nature. People do notmake natural resources, but gather them fromthe earth. And those are limited.Examples of natural resources are,•Water•Air•Soil, etc.

Natural Resources

Renewable Non-Renewable

resources can be replacedor made up again. Somerenewable resources canbe used over and over

againforests, fish, solar energy,

etc

resources cannot bereplaced and once theyare used up, they are

gone forever

oil, gas, iron, etc

Page 6: Sustainable use of Natural Resources (ENV-101)

Sustainable use of Resources:is the method/ process of using limitedresources in a conservative manner.

To use natural resources sustainably we needto rethink which resources we use and howwe use them.Sustainable resource use occurs when our rateof consumption can continue forever withoutdamaging the environment.

Sustainabile use of water Recycle water in industry Prevent groundwater contamination Fix water leaks Use water-saving toilets, showerheads, and

clothes washers Collect and reuse household water to irrigate Purify and reuse water Slow population growth Turn off sink faucets while brushing teeth,

Outdoorsource

Improve energyefficiency to reducefossil fuel use

Rely more on lower-polluting natural gas

Rely more onrenewable energy(especially solar cells, wind, geothermal andsolar-producedhydrogen)

Transfer energyefficiency, renewableenergy, and pollutionpreventiontechnologies todeveloping countries

Reduce poverty Distribute cheap and

efficient cookstoves orsolar cookers to poorfamilies in developingcountries

Reduce or ban indoorsmoking

Develop simple andcheap tests for indoorpollutants such asparticulates, radon, and formaldehyde

Managing soil in sustainableway,

Stop using uneccessary furtilizer Proper landscaping Start multiculture Reduce irrigation Preserve top soil

For sustainability we should tryto: use renewable resources,

like wind and solar energy, instead of non-renewable resources, like fossil fuels.

use those resources which cause less harmto the environment.

cut back on the amount of natural resources, and in particular non-renewable resources we use, byreducing, reusing and recycling.

we should cut the waste.Stop pollution.

For sustainability, pleasePractice the three R's of resource use

(reduce, reuse, recycle)
