POPULATION GROWTH Taiping is a town located in northern

Perak, Malaysia, with a population of 198,112 (2000), 191,104 (in 2007), and 217,647 (in 2011).

Holds the rank as second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state capital.

Its development was slowed down after the replacement, but in recent years the town has developed rapidly.

BIODIVERSITY• Zoo Taiping is a zoological park located at

Bukit Larut, Taiping, Perak.• The oldest Zoo in Malaysia. • One of the major zoological parks in

Malaysia.

• Located in the district of Kerian in the state of Perak .

• To protect migratory and resident bird species, which have been using the wetland area for many years.

• Tens of thousands of migratory birds comprising 48 species of 8 families visit Kuala Gula from September until April each year.

• Some of these migratory birds come from as far as Siberia in Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Japan and China.

• The Kuala Gula mangrove swamp forest and mudflat are not only important for migratory birds but also for 600 families of fishermen who depend totally on the mangrove forests and marine ecosystem for their livelihood.

• The world's first orang hutan conservation and rehabilitation centre.

• Orang utan sanctuary to educate, research on and better understand this protected species.

• Oldest hill station and founded in 1884.• Located just ten kilometres from quiet

Taiping in Perak. • Bukit Larut is 1036 m above sea level. It is

located in the wettest part of the country, this hill station experiences the highest rainfall in the country.

• The hill is riddled with groves of evergreens and vibrantly colorful flora and fauna. Nowhere in Malaysia will you witness a wide canvass of roses, dahlias, daisies, pansies, petunias, lupines and marigold abound in profusion.

• The cool climate also favours golden sunflowers, reputedly the largest variety in the country.

• The unspoilt mountain forest is also home to smaller fauna such as gibbons and squirrels, while its flora comprises species such as wild orchids, Mountain Giant Fishtail Palm and many species of bracken-like ferns.

GREEN SPACE Lakes and Ponds• Since tin mining ceased in Taiping, many of its mines turned into lakes, namely South Lake, West Lake and Jungle Lake.•Between the lake are small islands and ponds with distinct characteristics, creating a serene and tranquil panoramic landscape.•Lakes and ponds play a pivotal role in sustaining the city and act as a water retention zones that prevent flash floods

Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut)•The lush greenery of Bukit Larut serves as a backdrop to Taiping and is a holiday resort and natural forest reserve for the Larut district.•Rising 1035 m above sea level, the hill still richly covered with tropical rainforest.

Burmese Pool•A natural swimming pool at the foot of Maxwell Hill with clear streams and waterfalls.•In 1870, it became the first recreation area in Malaya.•A picnic spot for the city folks, located in the natural forest thus offering close contact with nature at only minutes away from the city centre.•It remains one of the most popular recreational destinations in Taiping.

Kuala Sepetang Mangrove Forest•Sanctuary for 150 species of birds, Kuala Sepetang mangrove forest is a paradise for wildlife from monkeys, otters, wild boars, snakes, and crabs, to the occasional crocodile, where several species of mangrove trees such as Aricenia and Rhizphora grow naturally along the coastal area as well as Bakau Minyak and Bakau Karap trees, used in the local charcoal industry.•It is the best managed sustainable mangrove forest in Malaysia and among the best worldwide.•Essential for sustaining the coastal ecosystem because of their role in protecting the environment by preventing soil erosion while providing sanctuary for animals and even breeding ground for marine aquatic fauna and a renewable source of timber production.
