By Justin Roberts, Julie Puckering, and Jordan York

Canada is rich with wildlife.

However

Some of Canada’s wildlife species are harvested.

Page 7: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

What do we mean by harvested?

To harvest is to catch or kill (animals) for human consumption or use.

Wildlife has been harvested in Canada since European contact…

Page 12: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

… and even earlier by Canadian Aboriginals.

Page 13: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

If Canadian wildlife species have been harvested for so

long, how are they still available today?

Page 14: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Healthy wildlife populations will grow naturally

Regardless of the following:

Page 15: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Animals naturally die of old age.

Page 16: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 17: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Some animals have natural predators.

Page 18: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 19: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Others may be at risk of harsh diseases.

Page 20: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 21: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Whatever growth is unaffected by these factors is available to be harvested sustainably.

Page 22: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

If we harvest more than the excess that is available, we are

overharvesting.

Page 23: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Overharvesting may result in a species becoming…

Page 24: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

…Extirpated

The Greater Prairie Chicken

Page 25: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

…Endangered

The Whooping Crane

Page 26: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

… or Extinct

The Labrador Duck

Page 27: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Wildlife managers regulate harvest to make sure we do

not overharvest.

Page 28: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 29: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

So that we can continue to use Canadian wildlife for…

Page 30: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

…Food

Page 31: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 32: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

…Clothing

Page 33: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife
Page 34: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

…And other wildlife products

Page 35: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

And so that we can enjoy seeing them in their

natural habitat.

Page 38: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

Follow regulations when you harvest Canadian wildlife…

Page 39: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

And support companies that harvest sustainably…

Page 40: Sustainable Harvest of Wildlife

… Otherwise our wildlife will not be available in the future.
