Hydraulic fracturing and related technologies created new ways of producing hydrocarbons;
Structural economic shifts, saturation effects and efficiency gains.
Investments continue to decrease, not only in the oil industry but also in the gas and power sectors.
Solar panels and batteries, wind turbines, biomass gasification and tidal energy, among other technological innovations are changing the face of the energy industry.
Oil prices have declined, creating a growing source of concern and structural change of the global energy market
Renewable energy consumption in the Arab region by country in 2014 (total = 557,047 TJ)

Share of RE in TFEC in the Arab region, 1990‐2014
Total Final Energy Consumption (EJ)Renewable Energy Consumption (EJ)Renewable energy share of total final energy consumption (%)
The Arab region display the smallest role in developing RE…This lie less in the resource base for RE – but rather in the region’s own development Model
The outlook for wind and solar power in the Arab region is generally positive provided further policy reform continues to incentivize investment in new sources of energy

Regulatory and Policy Frameworks Key to Energy Efficiency in the Arab Region
RISE energy efficiency (EE) indicators for the Arab Countries
(Source: World Bank, 2017a)
The indicators chosen have been shown to be effective in many countries in enabling investments in energy efficiency, and can hence provide an idea of where countries stand relative to each other
The world is in the midst of an important energy transition, the 2030 Agendafor Sustainable Development and the adoption of Paris Agreement are alsokey factors in changing the future energy mix and sustainability of energyresources;
New solutions and a new mix of energy sources with a high focus onsustainability need to be developed through improvement in Energy efficiencyand Renewable energy;
Review and adapting the Fiscal policies and frameworks, Governance andtransparency are required;
Enhancement of the business environment is necessary by encouraging thegrowth of the private sector, providing economic incentives and access tofinance;
A strategic and forward-looking is required for better management ofnatural resources through economic diversification of the Arab economies.
