• Reviewed the project for environmental impacts

• Responsibly specified products

• Led the team to evaluate sustainability measures

• Carried out Dynamic Simulation Modelling

• Carried out LZC analysis

• Ensured the scheme met the New Part L

What we did to create a Sustainable Building

Page 7: Sustainable Architecture Presented by Caroline Batson Senior Architect and Sustainability Manager.

This was done by:

• Designing to reduce demand by conservation measures, passive heating and cooling strategies, day lighting, shading and orientation

• Maximising mechanical and electrical efficiencies

• Using renewables to meet needs

•genuinely zero carbon building will payback the carbon invested in its construction through exporting zero carbon energy back into the national grid

How to design to be a Low Carbon Building

Page 8: Sustainable Architecture Presented by Caroline Batson Senior Architect and Sustainability Manager.

• Sketch• Dynamic Simulation Modelling • Model • Detail drawings • Planning approval • Production information • Construction

How we designed to be Sustainable

Page 9: Sustainable Architecture Presented by Caroline Batson Senior Architect and Sustainability Manager.

• Solar Analysis

• Thermal Performance Analysis

• Natural Ventilation Simulation

• Part L Compliance

• Heat Loss and Heat Gains

• Occupant Comfort Analysis

• Energy Consumption Prediction

• Life Cycle Costing

• Renewable Energy Analysis

We provided detailed analysis of:

Page 10: Sustainable Architecture Presented by Caroline Batson Senior Architect and Sustainability Manager.

We used DSM from initial design stage to make informed design decisions by analysing:

• Form

• Overall fenestration design

• Thermal properties

• Glazing properties

• Lighting strategies

• Low/Zero Carbon feasibility strategy

Page 11: Sustainable Architecture Presented by Caroline Batson Senior Architect and Sustainability Manager.

• We evaluated cost efficient solutions to combat solar gains

• We knew whether solar gains needed minimising or maximising

• Ensured that solar gains did not exceed building regulations

• Gained BREEAM credits for glare control

Solar Analysis

• We evaluated cost efficient solutions to provide day lighting

• Provided day lighting calculations for BREEAM

Daylight Analysis

Occupant comfort within CIBSE guidance with minimal use of mechanical ventilation and air conditioning by:

• Planned to promote natural ventilation

• Cross ventilation

• Stack effect

• Attenuated louvers

• Night time cooling
