“ Biodiversity is key to food security and nutrition

FAO’s work aims at balancing the need to improve the food and nutrition security and livelihoods of the poor, with that of preventing the degradation, contamination and loss of natural resources

and reducing the uncertainties associated with climate change. To adapt to these challenges and uncertainties, a large reservoir of biological diversity will be needed.

“Agriculture is a major user of biodiversity; But it also

contributes to the loss of biodiversity.

There are technical solutions to reducing the ecological footprint of agriculture through sustainable practices can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, habitats and ecosystem services provision.

“Natural enemies (predators, parasites and pathogens) of crop pests provide a regulating service called biological control

that can drastically minimize the use of agrochemicals,

thereby reducing adverse effects on the environment, such as contamination of natural resources, and on human health.

“Vegetation cover prevents soilerosion and ensures soil fertilitythrough natural biologicalprocesses such as nitrogenfixation.

“Well-managed fisheriescontribute to sustainedecosystem services fromboth freshwater and marinesystems,

with trophic webs and provisioning and regulating services extending well beyond the scope of the target stocks.

“Forest restoration, for

example, contributes to airand water purification, carbonsequestration and storage.

“ Well maintained agricultural

and forest lands reduce risks anddamage from floods, storms, tsunamis, avalanches, landslidesand droughts.

“ Vegetation cover prevents soil

erosion and ensures soil fertilitythrough natural biologicalprocesses such as nitrogenfixation.

“Approaches

that integrate ecosystem concerns to crop, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture practicesare increasingly being devisedand developed

But for farmers to adopt them, they require an integrated package of solutions, that renders sustainable practices affordable and financially attractive
