Statement from Top Management

Dear Stakeholder,

We believe it is an ethical and moral duty for every organization to take responsibility for its social and environmental impacts and adopt a pro-active attitude to tackle them. This is becoming increasingly important to ensure long-term prosperity and a positive environmental, social and economic legacy for our company.

With this first report, we wanted to identify and measure our impacts and create the starting point of our journey towards becoming more sustain-able, every day. We believe our stakeholders will be increasingly supportive of our efforts towards open and transparent communication and our ef-forts to embed sustainability in our operations.

In the canton of Neuchâtel , where our production unit is based, the local government actively supports all initiatives aimed at increasing the com-petitiveness of the region and the creation of highly qualified jobs in competitive and high-added value sectors. This increases local job oppor-tunities outside of the traditional sectors of agriculture and watchmaking and curbs the migration of the local population towards urban areas.

We seek to constantly improve the standards of our products and ser-vices to ensure the highest quality and safety, and since our beginnings we have been working according to the most stringent ethical and quality standards: we believe now the time has come to integrate sustainability into our daily activities in a more structured and cohesive manner.

Our aim is to create value for all our stakeholders, because we are con-vinced that only by pursuing the Triple Bottom Line of Economic, Social and Environmental results will we be able to be successful in the long run.

We hope you will enjoy reading our report and look forward to receiving your feedback and question.

Sincerely yoursGMT Fine Chemicals SA

Our first Sustainability Report

This is our first sustainability report. The information provided pertains to 2016-2017 calendar years and, whenever possible, contains references to 2015. This report has been prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards: Core option. We decided to adhere to the GRI Standards Framework to ensure that our performance can be measured and com-pared objectively by our stakeholders.

The report has not been externally checked, as most information con-tained is already either audited, verified by external parties or complies with the most stringent regulations. The report was submitted to GRI for the ‘Content Index Service’, which was successfully completed.

This is one of GRI’s Alignment service, which aim to assist reporting organizations using the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards to im-prove their report’s navigability and clarity. The GRI is an independent non-profit organization that helps businesses, governments and other organizations understand and communicate their impacts on issues such as climate change, human rights and corruption. The GRI Standards are the first global standards for sustainability reporting, featuring a modular, interrelated structure, and represent the undisputed, global best practice for reporting on a range of economic, environmental and social impacts. We have made our best effort to highlight the areas where we intend to focus our sustainability effort in our materiality analysis, which can be found on page 21.

In the course of our activities we want to make sure we are aligned with and contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the blueprint conceived by the United Nations to set a global framework of the most urgent development challenges as well as specific and measurable targets. This report highlights the SDGs and briefly explains how we contribute towards their advancement.

Since the beginning of our operations, Swissmedic – the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products –granted the current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) certification, renewed every two years after an in-depth inspection.

The cGMP regulations for drugs contain the requirements regarding meth-ods, facilities, and controls used in manufacturing, processing, and packing of a drug substance. The regulations make sure that a product is safe for use, and that it has the ingredients and strength it claims to have.

We are accredited as authorized Foreign Manufacturer by the Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) since 2005 and have been present on the Japanese market since 2006.

Last but not least, in 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) successfully inspected our production site.

Our stakeholders provide us with useful recommendations and new perspectives, which are highly valued to achieve the constant improve-ments needed to be successful. Paramount to this is to identify and measure our social, environmental and economical impact effectively in order to support the definition of a long-term business strategy and a well-structured dialog with our stakeholders.

Only by engaging with our stakeholders on a regular basis can we cre-ate shared value for our company and the territory in which we operate. Furthermore, this allows us to better understand who they represent and the expectations they hold regarding our business practices. We have therefore mapped the main groups of stakeholders with whom we interact and described the manners in which we engage with them.

20 102 - 46 | 102 - 47 | 103 -1 | 103 -2 | 103 -3 GRI

As this is our first sustainability report, defining the most relevant areas of action for our business and our stakeholders is essential.

We have therefore conducted a materiality analysis, which is the corner-stone of a sustainability plan, that incorporates the most significant values for both a company and its stakeholders.

It consists of identifying the social, environmental and economic as-pects that can impact a company’s performance or influence the way its stakeholders interact with it. It is a useful practice to monitor the level of alignment between the stakeholders’ expectations and our per-spective. We have therefore assessed these aspects in terms of priority both for our stakeholders and for our business strategy, and of their potential impact on the creation of economic, social, and environment value. We have applied this principle as illustrated by the guidelines of GRI Standards after having analyzed the industry practices.

These aspects:

• Are related to laws, standards, regulations and international agreements

• Affect stakeholders or their evaluations and decisions

• Have an influence on our values, policies, strategies and objectives

• Represent a concern or expectation of our stakeholders or are a matter of discussion with them

• Are a risk or an opportunity for GMT

• Are an industry issue reported by our peers and competitors

After defining our material aspects, we have asked our senior team to fill out an internal survey to estimate the relevance of each material aspect for our company and for our stakeholders, and whether the relevance of these aspects is going to increase, decrease or remain equal in the fu-ture. With this set of data, we have created our materiality matrix, which portrays the areas of relevance that are at the centre of our sustainabil-ity strategy and define the way in which we will implement our future initiatives.

Ten aspects are considered relevant from a sustainability standpoint. Long-term growth is the most important aspect, unsurprisingly so due to the small dimension of our company in an industry that is dominated by large conglomerates. Of high importance are also the safety, health and well-being of our staff, waste management, continuous training of our team and the work environment and sense of belonging that is one of the main reasons for our success.

We believe it is important to contribute towards redistributing the value generated in the local economy: therefore we select suppliers as close to our location as possible. In 2017 we sourced 94% of all our purchases in Switzerland, out of which 15% in the Neuchâtel region.

In 2015 and 2016 we received a financial support from the Canton of Neuchâtel to support our US FDA certification, in the framework of a plan to incentivize innovation and competitiveness. In addition to that, the Canton of Neuchâtel were very supportive and responsive in our extension project by selling over 1’000 m2 of land and reallocating the agricultural areas to industrial areas. Thanks to this, the new building will be ready in summer 2019.

GMT continuously invest in order to maintain a state-of-the-art facility. In the coming years 2018-2020 larger infrastructure and equipment purchases of goods and services are planned in order to improve the company sustainability and productivity.

Climate change and environmental degradation have been recognized as crucial issues which we, and above all future generations, must tackle. At GMT, we are committed to the protection of the environment and in making responsible use of natural resources. We do our best to reduce our environmental footprint by minimizing risks of pollution, improving re-source efficiency, and reducing our energy and water consumption, as well as our emissions of CO2 and VOCs and waste production. In 2017 we witnessed a significant increase in production activities due to increased sales. In addition to that, major equipment re-qualification processes were performed, as required by our technical guidelines. Tests were carried out to check the flawless performance of our equip-ment at maximum capacity, for which significant quantities of water and energy were used, with the subsequent increase in CO2 emissions, hence altering the KPIs of such measurements.

We strive to always increase our efficiency: our use of energy in relation to the kg produced decreased in 2016 and remained almost stable in 2017, while the ratio between the turnover index and the energy con-sumption index (both with base 2015 = 100) was very encouraging for 2016 to grow again in 2017, but only due to the reasons cited above. In 2017 both gas and electricity use grew, with a much higher proportion of gas in the mix.

Paper The increase in office paper consumption goes hand in hand with the growth of our business. In 2017 the total and per capita increase is due, again, to the spike in maintenance activities. It is our goal to re-duce the consumption of paper by increasing the use of e-documents from 2018 onwards.

Water The water we use comes from the local groundwater aquifers in Val-de-Travers. Most of it is used to cool the heat exchangers. This water does not come into contact with our products and does not require any treat-ment; hence it is sent into the municipal sewage system. An important amount of water is used by the purified water system, which supplies the ultra-pure H2O that goes in the production of our APIs.Similarly to our energy consumption, we managed to increase our effi-ciency for 2016, but in 2017, only for the reasons cited on page 26, our performance decreased.

Origin of electricity The mix we purchase from our provider, Groupe E, has a percentage coming from unspecified sources. In 2017 E-Group supplied a large part of electricity coming from renewable sources. From 2019 onwards we will buy only electricity coming from certified renewable sources, hence increasing our commitment to become more sustainable, every day.

Waste Our waste is managed by a specialized company, Thommen Furler AG. It is mainly composed of waste water: most waste water is mixed with salt and may be decontaminated, whereas the small part that contains etha-nol (solvents) is recycled and sent to cement factories in Switzerland to be used as fuel for their energy intensive production.

There is a clear prevalence of males in our staff, which is rather normal for a small chemical production company. Every member of our team is highly qualified and has at least a technical school degree. All age groups are represented, and the turnover rate is very low.

At GMT, we are committed to taking care of the local community and our employees. We want to be a good corporate citizen, and a good example of how business can be a positive actor. We are a small team and have developed excellent interpersonal relationships during the years we have been working together. The size of our company allows for the develop-ment of close bonds and a sense of belonging that is more difficult to find in larger companies. We are also close to the community where we operate and where many of us live with our families, and we want to con-tribute to the economic and social growth of the Val de Travers region. We want to be an attractive employer and provide excellent benefits and development opportunities to our staff. We do so by providing good compensation, excellent training and development systems, together with a pleasant work environment. Our remuneration policy does not dis-criminate between genders or residency. It is based on the skills, performance and years of service of the employees, as well as in the performance of our company.

Staff residence Couvet is located very close to the French border, and as it is often the case for many companies in our region, we employ several non-resi-dents. As a general rule, whenever possible, we look for the best and most qualified staff locally. Due to the very specific and highly technical skills required, it is often difficult to find the necessary manpower among the local population.

Hours of Training In a highly advanced industry like ours, continuous training and develop-ment are a key priority for our long-term success. Every year each employee attends training sessions, both internal and external. In 2017 we have invested an average of CHF 1’900 in training activities per capita, not including the time invested away from the workplace.

h Health and Safety

Main subjects of the training sessions were in the areas of HSE, QC, QA, and in the technical domain. In recent years, we have developed an out-standing Health & Safety (HS) Management System to ensure that all HS issues are tackled effectively and to foster constant improvement of this sector within our company. Our goal is to prevent accidents, injuries and pollution and to maintain a world-class HS performance. Only through quality design of risk assessment practices and continuous training can we ensure these targets are met. While in 2015 we had a minor accident in our production site, we are very proud to say we have not recorded a single accident in the past two years, neither work-re-lated nor outside of work. This is an excellent result and we are doing our utmost to maintain this track record in the future.
