In 1335 dutch man guido invented a

structure- with an engine , a pair of wheels

    and gears.

In 1519 leonardo da vinci a car powered

by springs that would drive the wheels

through a system of interlocking gears

Suspension refers to springs, shock absorbersand linkages that connect vehicle to its wheel.

It reduces impact of road condition.

    It provides safety to user.

    Maintain correct vehicle road height

Reduce the effect of shock forces

Maintain correct wheel alignment (tracking) Support vehicle weight

Keep the tyres in contact with the road

Control the vehicles direction of travel Protect vehicle from pitching and rolling

By maximizing the friction between the tires

    and the road surface.

    Springs Shock Absorbers

  • 7/29/2019 Suspension in Automobile

    8/30

Absorb vertical shocks from road irregularities.

    Types of suspension spring are

    1. Leaf Spring2. Coil Spring

    3. Torsion bar

The leaf spring resists sideways movement .

One end of the leaf spring is attached directly

to the chassis through a "fixed eye.

the other end of the leaf spring has a

swinging shackle to allow the spring to alter its

    length when flexing.

These springs would allow the body of the

vehicle to bounce uncontrollably over an

    undulating (bumpy) road;

Therefore the majority of the suspension

systems are fitted with dampers (shock

    absorbers)to control the spring movement.

    COIL BOUND or COIL CLASH.

Torsion bar stores energy when twisted .

But the most efficient energy storing shape

for a given weight of spring is circular and thatis coil spring

    Controls Unwanted Spring motion through

    dampening.

Reduce the magnitude of vibratory motions by

turning the kinetic energy of suspension

movement into heat energy that can be

    dissipated through hydraulic fluid.

    Dependent Suspension:

Both wheels are connected to a single

rod, which are kept in place by leaf spring and

    shock absorber.

    Application: Trucks

    Independent Suspension:

Front wheels are allowed to moveindependently.

    Application: Cars

    Dependent rear suspension:

    Simple in design.

Here the leaf spring or coil spring is directly

    clamped to the drive axle.

    Application: American Cars.

    Independent Rear suspension:

    Four-Wheel independent Suspension

    scrub radius :

It is the distance in front view between

the king pin axis and the center of the contact patch

    of the wheel .

Itis a type of automotive suspension system

    invented by Citroen.

It was used on Berliet trucks and is recently

    used on Mercedes-Benz cars.

The purpose of this system is to provide a

    sensitive, dynamic and high-capacity

suspension that offers superior ride quality.

    Good for comfort.

Have advantages related to car handling and

    control

    The suspension being self-levelling, the

possibility opens for dynamic height control.

    This reducing aerodynamic resistance,

improving fuel economy and increasing high-

    speed stability.

    Service sometimes requires a specifically

    trained mechanic.

The suspension systems can be expensive to

    repair or replace.
