Dear Orange Grove Families, As promised in the September newsletter, I have an update on the opportunity to participate in the Commissioner’s Leadership Academy. The first session was last week wherein educational leaders from all over the state engaged in developing common language around what quality education looks like through simulated walkthroughs. We were able to interface with Commission- er Pam Stewart (pictured below) about school grades, base student allocations, and on level grade performance of students statewide. Throughout the remainder of the school year there will be additional days that I will be out of the building to achieve the learning outcome to include: develop a shared vision for high quality teaching and student learning, development around habits of thinking for the instructional core, and improve- ment of instructional practices; hence, increasing student achievement. I am excited about this opportunity because I believe that my continu- ous learning as a leader is vital, just as I believe it is important for our teachers to push their thinking and students to stretch them- selves for the purpose of optimal learning to occur. Dear Orange Grove Families,

As promised in the September newsletter, I have an update on the opportunity to participate in the Commissioner’s Leadership Academy. The first session was last week wherein educational leaders from all over the state engaged in developing common language around what quality education looks like through simulated walkthroughs. We were able to interface with Commission-er Pam Stewart (pictured below) about school grades, base student allocations, and on level grade performance of students statewide. Throughout the remainder of the school year there will be additional days that I will be out of the building to achieve the learning outcome to

include: develop a shared vision for high quality teaching and student learning, development around habits of thinking for the instructional core, and improve-ment of instructional practices; hence, increasing student achievement.

I am excited about this opportunity because I believe that my continu-ous learning as a leader is vital, just as I believe it is important for our teachers to push their thinking and students to stretch them-selves for the purpose of optimal learning to occur.

Visual Art / Digital Art + Design

We are continuing our studies on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Our current projects include a Recycling Art work to be entered into the 3 R’s Art Contest sponsored by the City of Tampa Dept. of Solid

Waste & Environmental Management; an art work based on the theme- “What is Your Story”- for the PTSA Reflections Contest; and collage making- traditional method as well as digitally in the style of J.R. Schmidt. Our next campus art exhibit the art works previously mentioned. They will be on display in the theater and

main office.

Other exciting news, one of our own students- Evan Gatscher- will have a Solo Art Exhibit at the

Bunker, 1907 N. 19th. Street, Ybor City, from Nov. 6- Dec. 4th. He has exhibited his art at the Leepa Rattner

Museum this past summer, and is currently exhibiting at local businesses in Tampa as well as St. Pete from

now until November- Cigar City Brewery, Four Stacks Brewery, Flying Pig Brewery, Bamboozle, ASI, Hidden

Springs Ale Works, and the Foundation Coffee Company. Additionally, Evan is currently working on two mu-

rals, one at Orange Grove Middle School and another in Seminole Heights. Evan is also part of a comic book

production in Kansas, which he discovered through his Facebook contacts.

News from the Counselors 7th Grade News

It’s great to be working with your child again this year!

Research shows that children whose parents are engaged in their education are more likely to achieve aca-

demic success. Here are some tips for getting involved in your child’s middle school learning experience.

1. Get to know the teachers. It’s a good idea to meet each of your child’s teachers. Ask about the best way

to get in touch if you have questions. Be sure to get their email addresses.

2. Volunteer at your child’s school. Being in the school is a great way to stay connected to school activi-

ties.

3. Do behind-the-scenes work. If you can’t be in school during the day, ask teachers and other school per-

sonnel to pass along some work that you can do on your own.

4. Volunteer to chaperone school dances and drive kids to school sports competitions. You’ll meet oth-

er parents, school staff, and your child’s classmates.

5. Go to school meetings and events. Attending concerts, plays, assemblies, meetings, and other activities

is a good way to become familiar with your child’s school community.

6. Find out about homework assignments and school tests. Check Edsby on a regular basis.

7. Talk to your child about school. Ask specific questions to draw out your child.

8. Give your child a quiet place to study and do homework. Be available to help if your child has a ques-

tion.

9. Check your child’s homework, but don’t do it for her.

10. Post a family calendar in a central place. Write down important school dates, including parent meet-

ings, due dates for projects, and tests. Encourage your middle schooler to add to the calendar and to check it

daily.
