INVENTORY RESEARCH- DESTINY

The inventory in Destiny 2 is very clear and user friendly. Itconsists of 2 pages of inventory: character and inventory. On the character subscreen, the items are split into 9 different sections which consists of items such as guns and armour. Each item automatically gets divided into its correct section, making it easy to organise. They also become shiny when they are new so that the player knows which item to check when they have collected it.

The inventory page consists of a wider range of items as they are items that don’t fit into a specific section of the character screen. The slight problem with this is that it is harder to find items that you want, however, this subscreen isn’t as commonly used as the character screen.

INVENTORY RESEARCH- DYING LIGHT

The inventory in Dying Light is all located in one screen. This screen is divided into two different sides; backpack and storage. The ‘backpack’ stores all of your items and the ‘equipped’ slide shows you which items you have equipped.

These two slides are useful because you can see which items that you have equipped. The advantage of having only one inventory page means that you don’t have to keep switching pages to see your items and you can swap items from your ‘backpack’ to your equipped items more easily.

Unlike Skyrim, there aren’t multiple tabs that will navigate you to certain categories. This is a disadvantage as you will have to scroll down through all of your items in order to find the category or item that you are looking for.

INVENTORY RESEARCH- SKYRIM

In Skyrim, the inventory is divided into 10 categories; favourites, weapons, apparel, potions, scrolls, food, ingredients, books, keys and miscellaneous.

The weapons tab lists all the weapons that you are carrying, similar to the apparel tab. The ingredients tab lists all the ingredients that can be used at the alchemist table to create potions and the food tab list all the food. This makes it very easy for the user to find the items that they are looking for as they can search for them in the category that the item belongs to.

When you select an item, it will show you details about the selected item such as: damage, weight and value.

HOSTILE THREATS

WaterThere is a very low amount of water in my environment. My environment is hot and demanding of water, however, there is only one area where water is available. It is also polluted so it has to be filtered before it is used or there is a high chance that you will be infected with disease.

FoodFood is also hard to acquire. There are areas that have more food than others, however, it could be poisonous so it might cause more harm. Food can be acquired by hunting but you have to cook it before eating it or you can get poisoned. The other way of collecting food is by stealing it but that comes with the risk of being caught and killed. The only food that is truly safe is the food that you can buy but it is very expensive.

ShelterSleep provides energy and safety but you can only go to sleep if you find shelter. Without energy, you become slower, more vulnerable and unable to carry as much items so your inventory becomes smaller. This means that you can only go outside for a limited amount of time or you will die. If you are in need of sleep, you can set way points to the nearest shelter on your map.

WarmthWarmth is a very important factor of staying alive in my environment as, at night, the temperature drops drastically and will kill you if you don’t have the right gear. The only ways to stay alive at night is with shelter or with thick clothes. Clothes will have stats that will show you how warm they are, however, the thicker the item, the heavier it is.

Water filter development

This is my final design for my water filter that I created in photoshop.

The back of the filter contains a water tank, used to collect dirty water which then enters the water filter from the tank.

The dirty water then gets filtered through to the bottom, which can be seen through the glass at the bottom.

These are different ideas for my waterfilter that I originally came up with. The design at the top left is the one that I chose to develop as it looks the best.

This is my first development for my inventory menu. I created it using pencil and paper.

This is my second development. I continued to use pencil to add extra boxes to the menu so the user will be able to carry more items.

For my final development, I used photoshop. I covered the image with rough shapes containing brown and orange to make the menu look old and rusty. I continued this process for my other menus.

CREATING MENUS IN PHOTOSHOP

I started creating my photoshop menu design by creating an A4 white sheet.

I then brought my scanned menu drawing onto photoshop and made another layer to draw over it. I also turned the opacity of the drawing down to 60 so that it wouldn’t be to clear. This allowed me to have a better look at what my new drawing will look like, without the old one, but still be able to see it.

I used the brush tool to outline the original drawing of my menu. I only outlined the boarder of the image and the tilte. Doing this helped me to re- create my original drawing in photoshop.

CREATING MENUS IN PHOTOSHOP

I then used the text tool to type the buttons in. I used the text tool instead of the brush tool because it was a lot quicker and more accurate. The font I used for the ‘options’, ‘start’ and ‘quit’ buttons was ‘magneto’ and the font I used for the title was ‘Franklin Gothic Heavy’.

Once I had outlined everything and fitted the text to the right positions, I switched to the original drawing layer and turned the opacity down to 0. After I looked at it without the original drawing and was happy with it I deleted the first layer.

After that, I created a new layer. I changed the colour from black to light brown and changed the size of the brush to 500 and coloured in the layer. The changing of the brush size was done to make it quicker for me to colour the layer in. I also changed the colour to light brown so that the menu look old.

CREATING MENUS IN PHOTOSHOP

I then switched the brush to a rougher texture and created another layer to add rust to the menu. I made the brown colour darker to make it look more like rust. I added another layer after that and did the same thing except I used an orange colour and I coloured over some of the brown colour.

Finally, I used the eraser tool to rub out the rust colours that went over the boarder.

For all the other menus, I repeated this process, however, I used the eyedropper tool to make sure that I kept the same colours as I used in my title menu.

Advantages of using a digital painting toolset

When creating my menus on photoshop, I found that it was a lot quicker and easier than creating them on paper. One of the reasons for this is that digital painting software allows access to unlimited resources. During the proccess of painting on photoshop, I will never run out of paper or colour because it offers an unlimited amount. This saved a lot of time because I never had to collect more resources or worry about running out.

Another advantage of using photoshop was is how easy it is to undo or erase work. When painting, you cannot erase ruined work and it can take a lot of time to erase work when drawing and it often still looks smudged afterwards. I didn’t have to worry about this when I was using photoshop because, using the eraser tool, I can easily erase any work and I can undo work by clicking ctrl + z.

The final reason why it is better to use a digital painting toolset is that you can use different layers to separate work. This helped a lot during the process of making my menus because I could use different layers for my text, background and additional colours. This meant that I could alter of erase my text or colour without affecting anything else. Using a traditional technique, this wouldn’t be possible and I could easily erase things that I didn’t want to.

•Brush tool - This tool allows me to draw images and colour white spaces. I can change the size, colour and shape of the brush.

•Eraser tool - The eraser tool allows me to erase any image, helping me to get rid of any unwanted lines or colour. Like the brush tool, I can change the size and shape of the eraser.

•Eyedropper tool - By clicking on the desired colour, this tool helps me to duplicate any colour that I want torepeat on another image.

•Move tool - This gives me the ability to drag an object to a different area to alter the image.

•Zoom tool - This tool allows me to zoom in and out of my image. This helps for erasing small areas of colour.

•Text tool - By using this, I can create text, helping me make titles and buttons.

•Spot healing brush tool. The spot healing brush tool allows the user to blend contrasted images together and cover up unwanted lines.

•Clone stamp tool - Using the clone stamp tool, I can duplicate part of an image. This is normally used for changing one image to look like another like making a tileable texture.

•Crop tool - The crop tool lets the user resize the page. This allows me to change the size of the page to focus on one part of the image.

• Marquee tool - This tool is used to select areas of an image, which can then be cut, cropped or copied.

•Lasso tool - The lasso tools acts the same way as the marquee tool except it gives you more freedom of what you want to select.

•Blur tool - This tool is used to make things blurry. Click and drag things to make them blurry.

Using digital palettes

Using levels:I used levels to create my bump and specular map. This helped to create my textures for 3ds max. I imported my texture into photoshop and changed the levels in order to create each map. I changed them differently for my bump and specular map.

This was a good technique for creating my textures. This process made sure thatmy textures looked 3d and detailed.

Using digital palettes

Brush palette:Another digital palette that I used was a brush palette to create the digital drawings for my asset and menus.

After importing my original drawings of my asset and menus onto photoshop, I used a drawing tablet and changed the size of the brush.

I then created a new layer and traced over the drawings. I changed the opacity to make sure that my digital drawing stood out against my pencil drawing.

Using digital palettes

Colour palette:

Another palette that I used was the colour palette. I used the palette to select a colour and I then used the brush tool to colour my asset drawings and menu designs.

I did this to make my menus look old and I used a brown and orangecolour to create rust.

Modular pack development

ModellingI started modelling my modular pack by creating a box and duplicating it ten times. I did this so that each box was the same size.

Next, I started to turn each box into an asset: for example, my roof, door, and window. I used editing tools such as extrude and bridge to create my door, window, shed, roof, ladder, garage door and building top.These tools helped me modify my assets: for example, the extrude tool allowed me to resize my assets to my preffered shape and the bridge tools helped me to connect different lines to create a new face to the asset.

Modular pack development

I used made a spline to create my lamp post and barrel. I did this by using the line tool to draw the outline of the asset. After, I selected ‘lathe’ in the modifier list and dragged the asset out until I was satisfied with the shape. This process help me with creating my lamp post and barrel because it was much quicker and was easier.

Modular pack development

TexturingTo start texturing my assets, I unwrapped them. I did this by selecting an assets and selecting ‘unwrap UVW’ in the modifier list. After that I clicked on the faces of the asset that i wanted to unwrap and I then clicked pelt map, start pelt, relax and commit. I repeated this process until I unwrapped all of every asset and then I saved and rendered the UVs.

Once I had finished unwrapping every asset, I started to create diffuse, bump and specular maps for the textures. The first step to this was making sure my texture was tileable. I made my texture tileable by opening my chosen texture on photoshop and selecting, image, offeset.

Modular pack development

When my texture was tileable, I made a bump map. To do this, I selected Image, mode, grayscale. Once the image was on grayscale, I selected image, adjustments, levels and then I altered the image until it was mostly white with a bit of black.

To create my specular map, I did the same process except I altered theimage until it was mostly black with a bit of white.

After I created my diffuse, bump and specular map, I returned to unity, selected my chosen asset, opened the material editor by clicking ‘m’, selecting ‘standard’ and attached my maps.

Organising my digital workspace

The first way that I organised my work was creating folders. I created different folders for all my work such as textures, renders, 3ds max, unity, images. This helped me to find all of my work and navigate through easily. It is also important because it made sure that 3ds max could find my textures.

The second way that I organised my work was by making sure I didn’t have a lot of software running at the same time. This made sure that I could render images quickly and the programs that I was using would run smoothly.

Another way of keeping my workspace organised was that I moved files from my H drive to the T drive. I did this because there wasn’t enough space in my H drive so I had to move them. This was good because it meant that I didn’t have to delete any files.

Historical

M.C EscherM.C Escher created sketches, such as this, with strong mathematical components. He has used perspective in this artwork to show an irregular and impossible object. With different points of perspective, this building shows a infinite waterfall loop to create an illusion.

This work appeals to a higher age range as it’s geometric inspired objects and sketched images are preferred by an older audience. It is also tonal and dark which isn’t as appealing to young people as much as a smooth colourful game. It pays a lot of attention to detail which is appreciated by adults.

M.C Escher’s work can be link with games like Monument Valley: a game where you guide a character through mathematical architectural illusions. This resembles a lot of Escher’s pieces and is clearly inspired by his geometric work.

Contemporary

Drew EtienneDrew Etienne creates paintings of blocks and dystopian landscapes. He uses perspective to create blocks that look like platforms. These images are made up of different irregular blocks scattered across the painting.

These pictures could appeal to young people because they include bright colours and many shapes. Games which include art like this can be played by young and older audiences.

The walk speed and run speed will be decreased when damaged because the character will be injured and have less energy, therefore they will be slower. This shows weakness.

The walk speed of the character will be increased when enhanced because he will be stronger. This will also make it easier for the player when they are in danger.

Evaluation

For this project, I was asked to produce a survival game including my modular pack, menus and a survival asset. To start my research, I analysed inventories for three different games. This helped me to get ideas for my own inventory and menu and they were something that I considered throughout this project. I also had to consider what kind of environmental dangers could be in my game such as, heat, dirty water, hunger, energy and shelter. The reason for this was to think about how my character could avoid these dangers with an asset to help him.

To create my modular pack and survival asset, I used 3ds max to design them on the computer. 3ds max was very helpful for me as I’m learning how to use it a lot better since my last project. I modelled, textured and rendered my assets using 3ds max.

I created hand drawn pictures to start my development for my survival asset. This allowed me to create them quickly and rub them out if I wanted to change them. When drawing my final designs for my asset, I used photoshop because it helped me to produce a cleaner image with colour very quickly. I also drew my original menu designs in pencil and later created the final menu designs using photoshop because photoshop allowed me to give the menus an old, rusty look using the colouring tools.
