Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
I am only 1-2 blocks outside of the walk zone depending on the
direction. I am a fit, active 37 yer old woman and it takes me
about 40 minutes to walk to Royal Oak school which is near the
future middle school. The middle school is to be grades 5-9 but I
heard the grade 4's will move over to the middle school
temporarily. How is an 8 year old expected to walk this distance in
the winter bundled up in snow pants and boots, uncleared paths and
snowbanks when it takes me 40 minutes on a clear day? Is this
distance considered appropriate for grade 4 students?
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Not to mention the dangerous feat of crossing Rocky Ridge road
to get to Royal Oak. Many people do not even stop at the 4 way
stop, and if the children do make it across there is no sidewalk on
the other side.

These walking zones are too large - some students will be
expected to walk 30 minutes plus - which is not a viable option in
extreme weather conditions! Parents will drive their children to
school will will result in more traffic in the area of the school
which in itself puts people at risk.

Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what

Will there be more pedestrian lights for crossing busy roads?
Will there be a bigger drop off zone for parents as more parents
will drive the kids to school as soon as it is dark or chilly. It
is too far for younger kids like grades 4,5,&6 to be walking
that distance alone. It is not safe anymore!!
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Very disappointed that the walk zones increased to ultimately
save money! Shame on you for not fully considering the consequences
- safety etc. Too far for younger children who need to be closely
supervised.

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
This is a massive walk-on! Has anyone from the CBE been out to
the area and walked to the school from say, RockyValley or
RoyalCrest Pl? I don't think so. Grade 4 kids will be going to the
middle school next year. Having them walk all that way will be
ridiculous. And it seems really arbitrary; Rocky Ridge Gate is in
the walk zone but Rocky Ridge Heath which is one street away on the
same side of the rode isn't, and they get bussing? If you live on
the West side of Rocky Ridge Blvd you get to be bussed but if you
live East on the road you have to walk? This definitely needs to be
rethought big time, and in a practical way, rather than just taking
a sharpie pen and drawing some boundaries. Please go back and start
again! Come and visit the community and see the area for
yourselves.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Traffic is already a gong show in front of Royal Oak School at
all times of the year especially in winter. There have been several
near-misses with kids getting hit. The Royal Oak School parents
wait starting at 3 PM up Royal Birkdale drive towards the middle
school to grab a space to pick up their kids. Royal Oak Way by the
condos is a gauntlet to drive through. Now, add in 1200+ middle
school kids. The walk-zone parents won't send their kids on the bus
or walking or biking, they will drive them especially if it's cold
out. Where will the park and wait? What is the traffic flow? The
CBE, CPS and Councillor Joe Magliocca has not addressed the current
traffic problems and have just turned a blind eye to them. The
middle school traffic will make the situation much, much worse.
Parents and the community need to hear concrete plans on how the
traffic situation will be enforced and how the two schools can
coexist with community residents who can't even get out of their
driveways during school pickup and drop-off times.

Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what

Seems fairly random, not taking into account roads and natural
lines. Some are walk when their next door neighbour is in the bus
zone. Some are walk and their neighbours across the street are bus.
Seems like there needs to me more finer detail.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

Too far for some families considering that there will be grade
4's attending the new middle school.

Why is the walk zone so large? Grade 4 kids are barely used to
walking alone, never mind to such lengths, particularly in
winter.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

I would like to see the walk zone be smaller and bussing
available to the students. Also would be on in the city transit
make stops down Royal Birch Blvd and around Royal Birkdale Drive.
Too long a walk for the younger kids, particularly in winter.

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
You mention that parents are used as part of your planning
process. I would like to know how many parents from our community
were involved in these consultations. I would like to know how
factors such as pathways and busy intersections play into the
decision making process. How does winter or adverse weather factor
into the planning; lack of day light in the early morning hours
when children are walking to school; how does street cleaning and
pathway snow removal (or lack there of) factor into decision
making? Why is the walk zone so dramatically different for Pratt
than for ROS? Especially considering we will be opening with grade
4's and have 4-6's that will be attending which are generally
considered elementary age? Why is the bus zone so very small?
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Please see all questions asked in question 3: darkness in early
morning hours, that Pratt will be opening with gr 4-8 so why would
there be such a difference in the zones compared to ROS? Traffic
issues, crossing RR road, lack of snow removal on pathways and side
walks (which could double walk zone times). I believe that public
consultations are required for decisions such as this where true
input is gathered ... I mean an actual meeting where parents are
invited to listen to how the decisions were made and then provide
input into the problems they foresee. It seems that the individuals
that are responsible for determining the walk zones are not as
knowledgeable about the communities as they need to be. I was very
surprised to see how small the bus zone is for our communities for
Pratt and don't believe this is a good service. I believe the walk
zones need to be reduced and specific to our communities, perhaps
RR road may be used as one natural barrier between the walk and bus
zones. This would help to ensure the safety of all the children
that would need to cross that busy street. Another natural barrier
may infact be the ravine in RO (to some degree). Just some
suggestions. My family is in the proposed bus zone so we are not
directly affected but I do feel for the other families I know that
will be impacted negatively by the increased size of the walk zone
in RRRO.

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
My first question regards the intelligence and credibility of
those of whomever presumed that their proposal is in any way
reasonable. When did anyone ever consider crossing Rocky Ridge Road
safe for adults let alone small children. Let's add darkness and
the fact that that road has become a jet ramp after its closure at
crowchild. The most important question is how do we stop this utter
plan of idiocy? We might as well paint targets on our children and
place crosses at the corners now. How about somebody stand up and
do whats right instead of hiding behind made up rules (called
policies for example) and acting like a dictator due to the false
sense of power that blindly applying some middle manager's policy
statement like it was one of the 10 commandments.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
The danger of having children in Rocky ridge daring to cross the
road into Royal oak. The use of distance markers innappropriate to
elementary students. Grade 4 students are elementary students even
though it has been dubbed a middle school. You should also consider
the extreme backlash that will directed at your office from within
the community and especially its impact on elected school
officials.

Q1: Demographic InformationResidential District Rocky
ridgeNumber of children 4Grade of child(ren)
Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
Is first enrolment for William Pratt middle school based on
where you live (ie within the walk zone) or will it be based on a
lottery?
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
I feel that the current designated walk zone is too big,
considering that the school starts at grade 4. The kids on the
perimeter of the walk zone (ex. Rocky ridge gate) will be walking
up to 45 minutes both ways. This is way too long for 8 & 9 year
olds to manage on their own, and lots of these parents will want to
bus their kids, to avoid the massive congestion that is already
currently at the royal oak school area.

Crosswalk concerns on Rocky Ridge Road How can Royal Oak school
require bussing at grade 4 but Pratt not at grade 4 - they are 1

Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

appropriate drop and go zones, maybe a group meeting spot to

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
We would like to see all the future crosswalks for the school
installed now.We have concerns about the distance our kids will
have to walk on the very cold winter days. The mornings walking in
the dark will be extremely cold on the -15 degree days
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
There should be a 4 way stop on Rocky Ridge Drive and Royal Oak
way for all the kids walking from Rocky Ridge to the new middle
school. This should be done now so drivers are use to the change
before the school opens. All the cross -walks for the school should
be installed now if they aren't already for driver to adjust to
changes. The Rocky Ridge road is a very busy road and so there may
need to be speed bumps and more 4 way stops. We need to slow down
the drivers. We are concerned that our grade student will have to
cross this road. There should likely be major cross-walk lights
installed for driver to see.

We are close, but I heard some kids are too far away and are
crossing a major road... For grade 4's this isn't safe
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

I think better marked crossing needs to happen by the school
between royal oak way and Royal oak circle. The they are currently
unmarked and people constantly don't stop for pedestrians

Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

Please consider that the people in cars have to be considered
too, not just the children that dart out between parked cars and
jaywalk to the school. This is what happens at the k - 4 school
down the street. Parents are belligerent and inconsiderate and make
driving by that school a nightmare.

The only reason why Royal oak got a school is because Rocky
ridge residents were adde to the mic to bring up numbers. It's
awful that we are not even considered with proper bussing for our
children to get to school.

RidgeNumber of children 2Grade of child(ren)
Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
1. Will the pedestrian crossing be upgraded for Rocky Ridge
Road, just north of Rocky Ridge Blvd? This is the most direct route
for most people coming from our area to the new middle school and
this is a busy 4-lane road with a 60 km/h speed limit. We could use
a safer crosswalk, but then the distance would be over the walk
zone limit of 1.8km.
2. Given we are near the outer distance of the walk zone, we
foresee the need to drive our children to the school frequently
because of darkness/weather. Our experience with the elementary
school is that the roads are clogged with cars. With an even larger
walk zone, we anticipate even more cars around the school. We think
a smaller walk zone and more buses would reduce this congestion. We
would be willing to pay for the bus service, given the
alternative.

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
- Why is the walk zone so large for the RR/RO Middle School, as
the school is now going to include grades 4-9. A large percentage
of the walk zone area will be greater than the 1.6 km for gr 4-6
children. - Also, having the walk zones different for RO elementary
does not make sense as a lot of families will have children at both
schools - while one child will be able to take the bus, the other
may need to be driven to school.- Our family lives on Rockcliff Bay
- there is a bus trap (where Rockyvale Dr meets Rock Lake Dr) -
which blocks our access to Rock Lake Drive. Rockyvale Dr/Rock Lake
Drive road & sidewalks are not cleared of snow from Rockcliff
Landing to Rockcliff Pt in the winter (which is most of the school
year). - The actual distance for any child living on Rockcliff Bay,
Rockcliff Landing or Rockyvale Green to get to the new school will
be 3.1 km because they will need to walk along Rockyvale Drive to
Rocky Ridge Blvd then up Rocky Ridge Road to Royal Oak Way. 3.1 km
is TOO FAR for young children to walk to school.- Rocky Ridge Road
is a VERY busy 2 lane arterial road that does not have controlled
intersections, and now young children will have to cross.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Please consider removing Rockcliff Landing, Rockcliff Bay &
Rockyvale Green from being included in the walk-limit for Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle School due to the fact that we have the bus
trap separating us from a viable access/walking route, and puts our
streets outside the actual walk zone limits.

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky
Ridge/Royal Oak Middle - William D. PrattSchool
Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
The route used to determine the walk zone included a bus trap
that vehicles can not use is not acceptable and the routes our
children will have to use are 3.1km from the school. This is
unexceptible for children at a middle school age. The congestion
between the elementary and middle schools will be greatly increased
increasing the safety of our children.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Drivable roads (bus traps being present) and cleared walkways
for children - are they cleared during the winter months and are
they safe to travel on. Both are present in Rock Lake. We are able
to use RocK Lake Drive as a bus trap is present between Rockyvale
Drive and Rock Lake Drive NW. These walkways are not cleared by the
city or HOA.

It makes sense to me, I just worry about anyone who has kids
that have to cross Rocky Ridge Rd, as it doesn't seem the most
pedestrian friendly road, with it being 4 lanes wide and a 60kph
zone.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

Please look into ease of crossing Rocky Ridge Rd to ensure
safety of the younger kids, grade 4, 5, 6 seems a little young to
be crossing that road to get to school.

walking and crossing let alone children. And with another 100
houses being built in this area it will become worse
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
light at crosswalk - pedestrian or traffic (more practical)

Q2: In which new school project(s) are you interested? Rocky

Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
I am very concerned that young children are being asked to cross
Rocky Ridge Road NW to get from Rocky Ridge to Royal Oak. This road
has no controlled intersections (other than at Country Hills Blvd,
which few kids would use). The crosswalks are very poorly lit, do
not have flashing overhead signage, and span up to six lanes (if
you include the two turning lanes). Given the significant amount of
[speeding] traffic that the LRT station generates on this road,
this is very dangerous for kids and adults alike. Significant
upgrades to the crosswalks would be required before I would be
supportive of the proposed walk zone.

It is a long way to walk for the rocky ridge kids especially
grades 4, 5, and 6 who still need to be supervised!

House is outside the walk zone currently for royal oak
elementary school, and my daughter gets the bus in gr4. For the new
middle school, the same house is now inside the walk zone. This
will be a very long walk across major roads at morning rush hour
and is not acceptable
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
Continuity between schools that are basically on the same site.
The cost of 1 bus won't change if it's supplying 2 schools, the bus
will be fuller with children and therefore more cost effective

Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

It's not reasonable to expect a child in grade four to walk from
Rocky Ridge to the school and cross a major thoroughfare with no
walking lights. Consider the number of low-visibility days (e.g. #
days with dense fog are considerably higher at the top of the hill
than in the valley bottom), how difficult it is to stop on this
road after a snowfall and the number of pre-dawn walks these kids
will have to make.
At a minimum, until there are a couple of controlled
intersections on a flat section of Rocky Ridge Rd, any child below
grade 7 level should be bussed in from Rocky Ridge.

Will there be a cross walk at the North end of Royal Birkdale

Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
The walk zone is far too big. While it is fine for children in
grades 7-9, it is far to big for children in grades 4-6. These
large walk zones are causing a lot of traffic/safety issues around
schools as parent drive their children due to the large walk
zones.

I think it is just a huge walk zone and the cut off for some of
it (between having to walk and not) doesn't seem to have reasoning
behind it. (One side of the street the walk and the other they
don't)
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk

Use more definite roads and definitive points as the cut off

Will the walk zone be reevaluated given the school will now

grade 4 falls under elementary walking distances not middle
school

the school is grade 4 to 9 not 5 to 9.... That means 9 year

Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what

Why is the walk zone so large?
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
It is unbelievable that students in Grades 4-6 are expected to
walk that far. Especially the grade 4's. They are too young. What
are grade 4 students treated differently from Royal Oak Elementary
to William Pratt? They would not be expected to walk that far if
they were still able to attend the elementary school. You need to
consider the dangerous roads they are also expected to cross on
their way there. Rocky Ridge road is a high-speed death trap as
commuters are rushing to the LRT. There are no lights or even lit
crosswalks for them to cross safely. You need to reconsider the
walk zone. And the city needs to immediately implement lit
crosswalks/lights along Rocky Ridge road in order for commuters to
slow down and change their practices well before the 2016 school
year begins.

We are excluded but live in royal oak, it seems that 95% of
royal oak is included, we walk to the elementary school which is
adjacent to the middle school. In fairness all of royal oak should
be included.

With the walk zone covering a rather large area of Royal
Oak/Rocky Ridge, it can be anticipated that many kids will be
driven by parents. Has there been enough consideration put into the
issues which will most definitely arise because of high traffic
volume? Traffic issues are already a huge concern at Royal Oak
School and with William D. Pratt just up the hill, I would hope
that plans have been put into place to work with the large volume
of traffic which these two schools will produce.

Q3: After viewing the walk zone for your community, what
questions do you still have regarding the designatedzone?
We are just outside the borderline of the proposed walk Zone. My
daughter who currently attends Royal Oak school would hate to leave
her friends behind who live within the walk zone. The walk zone
should be extended to Royal Terrace. We currently walk everyday to
school from that area and think that if they must be a walk zone in
place, the area should be equally disbursed from the school. If you
compare the distance, it currently favours Rocky Ridge area.
Q4: Is there anything else we need to consider regarding walk
zones as we move forward?
A Walk zone does make more sense, but kids who are already
attending Royal Oak school should be given priority to the middle
school. However moving forward, Royal Oak school(elementary) should
give priority to students within the walking distance.
