SURVEY METHODOLOGY & SAMPLE CHARACTERISTICS
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms is a survey of partners, associates, of
counsel and contract lawyers with law firms in the United States with at least 25 lawyers.
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms excludes lawyers working for
government, private corporations that are not law firms, law professors, and all law firms
with fewer than 25 lawyers Many Primary Research Group surveys are international in
scope; however, only law firms in the United States are included in this survey.
The survey schema is based on the following formula: 60% of the organizations in the
sample are drawn from law firms with 20-49 lawyers; 20% of the organizations in the
sample are drawn from law firms with 50-100 partners and 20% of the sample is drawn
from law firms with more than 100 lawyers.
480 law firms were randomly chosen as a frame and lawyers in these organizations were
randomly sampled. Not all law firms and individuals are approached to participate in each
study and there is some diversity in the sample from study to study. The sampling is
stratified by the three target size categories above; these categories were further sub-
divided by state, according to the number of law firms found in the state, and served as a
quota system for random selection within quotas defined by firm size and geographic
origin. The sample size for this study was 104 law firms and 256 lawyers.
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms never asks its survey base about
particular cases that a firm has participated in or about particular clients of a firm. Data is
presented in the aggregate or in sub-groupings defined by the characteristics of the
individuals and firms in the sample. Some open ended questions are listed individually but
anonymously.
Names of individual respondents are confidential. The names of the law firms for which
individual respondents work is listed in an appendix to give survey users a better idea of
the types of firms in the sample. However, lawyers are approached individually and not
through any institutional arrangement with their law firm. Listing of a firm does not claim
or imply any decision by an institution to participate in this survey, or imply an
endorsement in any way of our products or findings.
Since the sample is chosen through random selection we cannot honor any requests for
individuals who may want to participate but who have not received an invitation. This is
not a reflection on any individual or firm but simply dictated by the survey methodology.

HOW TO READ THE DATA What percentage of the online legal research that you do is conducted on your laptop? Broken out by Age of Respondent Age of Respondent Mean Median Minimum Maximum Under 30 26,76 20,00 0,00 100,00 30-39 36,02 22,50 0,00 100,00 40-49 42,79 20,00 0,00 100,00 50-59 26,24 10,00 0,00 100,00 60 or Over 30,78 10,00 0,00 100,00 The far left hand column gives you the criteria by which the sample data is being broken out. In the example above, the criteria is Age of Respondent. The data is being broken out separately for different age groups in the sample population. So, row 2, starting from the far left says: Under 30. This means that the data on this row is for lawyers under the age of 30. Then, staying on the same row, the second column, and reading to the right, 26.76% of the legal research by lawyers in this age category is conducted on their laptop computers. Moving down to the third row, on the far left, it says 30-39. Then, reading to the right, 36.02% of the legal research done by lawyers in this age group was done on laptops. If you continue to the right, the next column after mean, or average, is the median. This is the “middle number” and a roughly equal number of lawyers are on each side of this number. So, for lawyers aged 30-39, for half of them less than 22.5% of their legal research is conducted on their laptops; for another half, more than 22.5% of their legal research is conducted on their laptops. Moving now further to the right, you see the columns minimum and maximum. These two columns give the lowest and highest numbers in the sample. So each age group has at least one lawyer who conducts no legal research on a laptop and at least one lawyer who conducts all of their legal research on a laptop.

SUMMARY OF MAIN FINDINGS
Percentage of Firms that Supply Laptops, Smartphones and Tablets to their Attorneys
We compared the percentage of lawyers in the sample who used firm supplied laptops and
smartphones to the percentage using firm supplied tablets. As might be expected more
individuals used firm supplied laptops and smartphones than tablets. 46.48% of the
lawyers in the sample used firm-supplied smartphones with the percentage climbing from
only a bit more than 35% of lawyers under 30 to peak at nearly 55% of lawyers aged 40-49
before falling back somewhat for older lawyers. 51.65% of men used a firm-supplied
smartphone but only 33.78% of women did so. 51% of partners had firm-supplied
smartphones but only about 39% of associates had them. Part of this reflects choice on the
part of the individuals involved rather than the policies of law firms. Only 25% of lawyers
who say that they are “not very proficient with computers or the internet” have a firm
supplied smartphone while more than 49% of those who say “I consider myself pretty tech
savvy” have them.
For tablets, only 10.55% of those sampled said that they have a firm-supplied tablet.
Interestingly these are overwhelmingly lawyers over the age of 50. Use of firm-supplied
tablets also seems more prevalent in smaller law firms as nearly 21% of the lawyers in
firms with from 25-49 lawyers had firm supplied tablets, well more than twice the
percentage in any other law firm size category. Men are more likely than women to have
firm supplied tablets as 12.64% of men have them vs. only 5.41% of women in the sample.
Skill with computers matters a lot as nearly 24% of those who say “I am the technology go-
to-person” have a firm supplied tablet while not a single lawyer who consider themselves
not very proficient with computers” have a tablet. This all suggests law firms still have a
technology training barrier to the proper use of tablets as they are being sought out most
aggressively by the most tech savvy. The use of firm-supplied tablets is also much greater
in certain practice areas than in others, particularly strong in areas in which litigation is
more common. For example, 26.83% of the lawyers in the sample in personal injury and
work predominantly for individuals use a firm-supplied tablet while only 4.65% of lawyers
in corporate, finance, securities and general industry law use firm supplied tablets – an
enormous difference. Also 16.67% of lawyers in health or environmental law use firm

supplied tablets; health law includes many lawyers involved in malpractice defense,
another area with extensive use of litigation.
The data on use of firm-supplied laptops is very different from that on tablets. 55.47% of
lawyers in the sample use firm supplied laptops and the data varied little by age group or
gender and was relatively similar when broken out for partners and associates. However,
lawyers at smaller firms – those with 25-49 lawyers – were significantly less likely than
others to use firm supplied laptops and only 30.23% of them did so.
Level of Satisfaction with Tablet Access to the Law Firm Website
We asked the sample how satisfied that they were with the access that they had to the law
firm website from their tablet computers. It was a multiple choice question and we gave
them five possible answers: Highly dissatisfied Dissatisfied More or less satisfied
Quite satisfied Highly satisfied. Most were more or less satisfied or quite satisfied,
27.34% and 28.52% respectively. However, a substantial minority, more than 18%, were
either highly dissatisfied or dissatisfied, mostly the latter. For whatever reasons,
dissatisfaction was greatest in the largest firms, those with more than 100 lawyers.
Percentage of Legal Research Done with Fixed Workstations, Smartphones, Laptops
and Tablets
We asked the lawyers in the sample what percentage of their online legal research did they
do with their smartphones, laptops and tablets. Smartphone use for legal research was
minimal, accounting for a mean of 2.82%. This was mostly accounted for by individuals
who consider themselves particularly savvy or a “go-to-technology person” and for these
individuals smartphones accounted for 3.36% and 4.3% of their online legal research,
respectively and may be a harbinger of things to come for the general population of
lawyers. Lawyers in corporate/finance/securities and general industry law were more
likely than others to use their smartphones for legal research, and it accounted for 3.84% of
their total research time.
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms: Use of Tablet Computers
19 | P a g e
Perhaps surprisingly, tablet computers accounted for a very small share of total online
legal research, only 7.06%. Most lawyers in the sample still do no research at all on their
tablets but a significant minority to a great deal of their research on tablets and it accounts
for 40-50-60% or more for this significant minority. Male partners and those who consider
themselves a “go-to-person” on information technology matters are more likely than others
to do legal research on tablets. For reasons not completely understood by us, lawyers
specializing in intellectual property are more likely than others to use their tablets for legal
research and tablets account for 12.61% of their total online legal research time. Perhaps
they are more aware of technology developments generally than other lawyers.
Research using laptops accounted for a mean of 33.37% of the online research efforts of the
lawyers in the sample, being especially favored by lawyers in employment law where it
accounted for 43.57% of online legal research.
Fixed workstations still account for most online legal research, if by a narrow margin.
Fixed workstations accounted for a mean of 52.85% of online legal research for the lawyers
in the sample. For most lawyers, fixed workstations still account for most research, as the
median amount of online legal research accounted for by fixed workstations was 70% but a
sizable number of lawyers who have largely left fixed workstations behind for legal
research drove the average or mean down below the median. Who are these lawyers who
are abandoning fixed workstation online research for various kinds of mobile devices?
Well they are not necessarily younger and gender differences account for nothing as both
genders seem to do about the same amount of their research on fixed workstations.
Overwhelmingly it is the firm’s “techies” those who when asked about their information
technology skills chose the description: “I am the technology go-to-person others come to
for help” and for lawyers in this group fixed workstations account for only 28.75% of their
online research. For whatever reasons, attorneys in employment law used fixed
workstations less often for their legal research than did their colleagues in other practice
areas.
Lawyer’s Use of Auxiliary and Detachable Keyboards with Tablets
About 34% of survey participants used some form of detachable or auxiliary keyboard with
their tablet. Younger lawyers were the most likely to do so as more than 47% of them used

a detachable or auxiliary keyboard with their tablet. Partners were much more likely to use
detachable or auxiliary keyboards and both were much more likely than lawyers of
counsel, generally older lawyers.
How Much Word Processing that Lawyers do on Tablets
We asked the lawyers in the sample how much word processing and writing do they do on
their tablet compared with other devices. This was a multiple choice question and we gave
them five possible answers: 1) None or Almost None- 2) Just Emails and Notes- 3) Starting
to transition from my laptop or desktop- 4) I do most of my writing on my Tablet now.
45.7% of survey participants said that they did none or almost none (word processing and
writing) on their tablets; another 39.06% said that they used it for note taking and emails
while 4.3% said that they were starting to transition from my laptop and desktop (implying
some word processing or writing with their tablets) while 1.17% said that they did most of
their writing with their tablets now. Who were those making the transition? There was
little difference by age or gender. However, one factor stood out. All those in the sample
choosing the answers indicating that they were doing some or most of their word
processing and writing on their tablets were partners; not a single associate in the sample
chose an answer that suggests that they were doing some or all of their writing on their
tablets. In addition, most were individuals who described themselves as tech savvy or tech
experts.
Tablet Brands Favored by Lawyers
Overwhelmingly, the lawyers in the sample owned iPads as their tablet of choice. Only
6.64% owned a Samsung tablet which were favored by lawyers over age 60 (14.55% had a
Samsung tablet) and by those who considered themselves the go-to-guy in their firm for
tech advice and 19.05% of them had Samsung tablets.
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms: Use of Tablet Computers
21 | P a g e
66.02% of those surveyed had an Apple tablet. More women than men had an Apple tablet;
71.62% had an apple tablet while only 63.74% of men had one.
Only 1.56% had a Google tablet; 5.88% of lawyers under 30 had a Google tablet. All Google
tablet users in the sample were female. All were in employment or real estate or insurance
law.
0.39% (less than 1%) of the lawyers in the sample had an Asus tablet.
0.78% (less than 1%) of the lawyers in the sample use a Lenovo tablet; all were male
partners at the largest firms and all working in employment law.
Use of Office for Android and Office for iPad
We asked the lawyers in the sample if they used Office for Android or Office for iPad. These
are mobile versions of the Microsoft Office suite; their use may indicate a tendency to use
tablets for word processing or spreadsheet analysis or presentation preparation or other
tasks that are now often done on laptops or desktops.
Only 0.78% of lawyers sampled, less than 1%, used Office for Android. Office for iPad, on
the other hand, was being used by 18.75% of the lawyers in the sample. Its use was
particularly popular at the largest firms, those with more than 200 lawyers, and 22.22% of
the lawyers in the sample that worked for such firms were using Office for iPad. Use rose
with the individual’s self-perception of information technology prowess; the more capable
the individual felt in the technology realm, the more likely that they were to use Office for
iPad.
Use of Google Drive, Dropbox and Box.com
Since tablets are often used with cloud storage services since they have limited storage in
the devices themselves, we asked the sample if they used any of three popular cloud-based
storage options: Google Drive, Dropbox or Box.com.
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms: Use of Tablet Computers
22 | P a g e
21.88% of the lawyers in the sample used Google Drive; its popularity was largely inversely
proportional to age as younger lawyers were more likely to use it than older ones. 23.63%
of men in the sample used Google Drive vs. 17.57% of the women. Associates were about
twice as likely as partners to use Google Drive 34.72% to 17.77%.
Dropbox was used by 45.7% of the lawyers in the sample. Its use was highest at smaller
firms with between 25 and 49 lawyers where 65.12% of the lawyers sampled used
Dropbox. Once again men were much more likely than women to use Dropbox; 50% of
the men but just 35.14% of the women used Dropbox. Box.com, on the other hand, was use
by 6.64% of lawyers sampled. For whatever reasons use was particularly high by lawyers
who spent little work time on litigation. Personal injury and other lawyers with mostly
individuals as clients were by far the greatest users of Box.com and more than 17% of them
in the sample used the service.
Does the Use of Tablets Increase Billable Hours?
We asked the lawyers in the sample if their tablet computers had helped them to increase
their billable hours. 27.73% of the lawyers in the sample said that they had. The youngest
lawyers were the most likely to say that their tablets had helped them to increase their
billable hours: more than 47% of them said yes. Trial related lawyers, such as those in
personal injury and medical malpractice defense were more likely than others to say that
their tablets helped them to increase their billable hours.
Uses of the Tablet
We asked the lawyers in the sample what did they use their tablets for at work. Apart from
email, the most prominent and important use was its use of the road. The tablet allowed an
important minority of lawyers to make much better use of their travel time and this
sometimes resulted in less downtime and more billable hours while in transport. Another
use was work from home. Only a small percentage used it for word processing but many
more used it for basic legal research, particularly while on the road, and especially as a
The Survey of American Lawyers at Major Law Firms: Use of Tablet Computers

quick and easy way to pull up key documents. For many it plays a role in depositions and
supplemental internet searches. A quick ability to tap into a firm’s databases was also an
appreciated end use. The home office uses of the tablet also were important to many in the
sample.
Favored Apps
Some of the apps most favored by the lawyers sampled were: GoodReader, Dropbox,
BigHand, NetDocuments, iAnnotate, FlightTrack, Evernote, Regoster, Textius, Dictadroid,
Aderant “On the Go”, and others.
How the Tablet Can Help Increase Billable Hours
About 27% of the lawyers sampled said that their tablets help them to increase their
billable hours. Overwhelmingly they said that tablets helped them to add billable hours
while traveling. The term “traveling” here is meant broadly and can include commuting to
and from work or to and from local destinations. Another factor was that the tablets faster
start up time can save time for lawyers who must respond to many emails. The search
capability of tablet also reduces the amount of time spent searching through paper
documents or lugging them from place to place.

Compare your tablet to your laptop or desktop computer as a platform for document preparation.
1) Tablet isn't capable of document preparation 2) I only use a laptop 3) Not Applicable 4) desktop is better 5) Poor 6) I like it better 7) laptop is best 8) Even though my tablet has MS Office on it, the desktop is far superior for document
preparation. 9) N/A 10) Desktop is best 11) The laptop remains the workhorse for initial document preparation while the tablet
is used primarily for document review and approval. 12) At one point, I tried integrating an iPad into my work, but it was cumbersome and,
at that the, the options for productivity and document management software suitable for legal work was inadequate. My firm issued laptop is loaded with crapware and is locked down to an unreasonable degree, so it is not much more functional except when the IT office is open to provide admin credentials whenever I need to access the setting on my computer of gain access to a website that gets blocked by the firms' firewall. In sum, my laptop is set up to facilitate document preparation in accordance with the firm's policies and document management system. The systems are not great and, for the most part, are more difficult to access or use on mac laptops or any mobile device.
13) I do not use tablet for document preparation. 14) No tablet. The laptop and desktop are identical, as I have access through Citrix that
provides the same information I have at my desktop computer 15) more difficult to use 16) Don't use it for that. 17) n/a 18) Not nearly as good for drafting but great in all other respects 19) Not as convenient or easy to use most of the time. However, it is more convenient
when I am traveling only for the day or to a place that will not have space or electrical capacity for a laptop.
20) I do not prepare documents on tablet 21) Idon't use a tablet 22) I generally have my secretary prepare my documents. 23) Not an acceptable substitute 24) I use a laptop 25) I use it through Citrix 26) Desktop is superior, then a laptop. I stopped using a tablet. 27) I do little document preparation, but what I do is pretty much exclusively from my
desktop computer 28) do not use tablet for document preparation (only emails) 29) don't use tablet for this 30) tablet is portable but laptop has more power and is more flexible

and am able to prepare documents with ease via remote access, MS Office 365 and my Bluetooth keyboard.
38) The tablet is too small, and without a keyboard, would be difficult to use. In addition, the tablet has less capabilities than my desktop -- for starters, I can't draft and revise documents using Microsoft Word.
39) I prefer a laptop/desktop 40) N/A 41) Do not own a tablet 42) It doesn't. I need a real keyboard. 43) Not nearly as good without a fixed keyboard or mouse 44) Desktop is my first choice, laptop second, tablet last 45) Always prefer desktop or laptop, due to better keyboard. 46) Laptop and desktop fairly similar. Desktop has far better large dual display. No
tablet at all. 47) Difficult. Has improved but cutting and pasting and managing multiple documents
simultaneously is difficult 48) I only use my desktop 49) Don't use a tablet 50) Not applicable 51) I rarely use my tablet for document preparation. I am more efficient with my laptop
because it has a traditional keyboard. 52) I do not have a tablet. 53) almost all doc prep is done on a laptop 54) Adequate 55) Tablet does not work well with firm software 56) It's very difficult to use for document preparation. It's slow, formatting is hit or

Most documents are in
Word and my tablet does not have that capability. 103) I do not use the tablet 104) N/A 105) inferior; lack of software 106) Not very functional in comparison. 107) My desktop is a laptop with monitor. I use it to prepare documents. 108) I prefer using my fixed workstation computer for document preparation.
Both the screen and keyboard are much bigger than on my lap top, so I prefer doing serious typing with it.
109) not applicable 110) I do not use my tablet in this fashion. 111) Laptop is slightly easier because I dock at my desk with standard keyboard

If your tablet has helped you to increase your billable hours how did it do so?

connected to my practice. In addition, I can use the tablet while in an airport, on a plane, when in the car with someone else driving, etc. and make use of what otherwise would be non-billable or less productive time.
5) small amount of work after hours 6) sometimes easier to travel with it and do billable work while traveling 7) allows me to work and bill from outside the office 8) I do not use a tablet. 9) Working from home 10) Yes, a distraction. 11) Not yet, but recent acquisition of BigHand may lead to dictation during travel, added
