REW reached out to Tommy Smythe, co-host on HGTV’s Sarah’s Rental Cottageseries, for some inspiration on turning a rustic space into a fabulous one. The interior designer and frequent TV guest and host, along with Sarah Richardson, recently transformed an Ontario 1950s cabin into the gorgeous showstopper you see in these photos.

Investment in BC new housing construc-tion was up 18.2 per cent year over year to more than $739 million in April, according to Statistics Canada data released June 22.
Growth in duplex construc-tion led the growth again this month, up 28.7 per cent com-pared with April 2014, fol-lowed by single-family homes, which rose 18.2 per cent year over year.
The growth in townhome investment in the province slipped slightly but was still high at 17.3 per cent year over year.
Having started to pick up last month, BC’s annual growth in new condo apartment invest-ment rocketed to 17.3 per cent year over year.
The province’s overall annu-al housing investment growth
was the second highest in Canada, after the Northwest Territories, which posted a 48 per cent year-over-year increase.
Across Canada, the $3.89 billion new housing invest-ment was an annual increase of a much more modest 2.3 per cent, due to signi� cant declines in some provinces and territories.
Nationwide, apartment buildings emerged as the biggest driver of investment growth, rising 7.9 per cent compared with last April, while investment in single-family homes fell by 1.8 cent com-pared with April 2014.
Earlier in June, Statistics Canada reported that the prices of newly built hous-ing in the Vancouver Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) rose both year over year and month over month in April.
New homes prices in the CMA rose by 0.4 per cent year over year, causing the price of new homes across BC to increase
0.3 per cent compared with last April.
Vancouver also saw a rise in the new housing price index compared with March, increas-ing 0.6 per cent month over month. The seemingly modest increase is the CMA’s highest monthly rise in new housing prices since early 2010. This pushed up the price of new homes in the province as a whole by 0.5 per cent month over month.
Well-known Vancouver condo developer Bob Rennie recently told REW.ca that the reason for the discrepancy
between new home and MLS resale prices comes down to timing. The price paid for a new home is only measured when the transaction is com-pleted and registered with the Land Registry, rather than when the home is purchased off-plan. Because of long lead times on home construction, the new home prices regis-tered today are those homes sold many months or even years ago – whereas MLS home prices are much more up to date.

price index continued its slide, dropping 1.5 per cent year over year and 0.2 compared with March.
Of all the metropolitan areas surveyed, Hamilton, Ontario again recorded the largest annual increase in April, with prices up 3 per cent compared with the same month last year.
Nationwide, April’s new housing price index increased 1.1 per cent year over year, and just 0.1 per cent compared with the previous month.
