July 26, 2002; through July 28, dawn to dusk
'Arizona's largest hamfest, features major manufacturers, swapmeet, seminars, classes and Saturday night dinner. Dry camping on campgrounds.'
" I'll keep it short and sweet. It was great, as always. "
2.2) Phoenix
Apache Reclamation & Electronics Inc. 313 W. Apache St Phoenix, AZ Tel: (602) 2540613
(From The Arizona Republic, by Sue Doerfler, Mar. 15, 2003)
'Beatup commercial kitchen equipment, chairs, salvage parts, marine supplies and more. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.'
(From Ran Talbott, 2004)
Apache Reclamation is a very small shop, which appears to be mostly based on selling stuff they've skimmed from loads they bought for scrapping and recycling. There are some odds and ends of new items (mostly oddball software and tools in 1 and low2digit quantities) that appear to have been picked up at store bankruptcy auctions, or maybe from a fleamarket vendor who retired.
Lots of electrical and electromechanical bits. Mostly used, some "new (very) old stock". Most of the electronic components look like they came from a few notveryrecent buys of engineering labs and/or early production inventory of very small startups. Not a great deal of variety, but what they do have tends to be cheap, even by surplus standards: I picked up a handful of Motorola pressure sensors (about 4 different types, with 84xx date codes) for a quarter apiece. If even 20% turn out to be good, I'll be way ahead.
In a nutshell: worth stopping by if you're in the neighborhood, but likely to disappoint if you make a long special trip. Robot builders may disagree, since there's more in the way of electromechanical junque to sift through.

(From Ran Talbott, 2004)
The ComputerSurplus.com folks are no longer in the retail storefront biz :( Not too surprising: given the way computer prices have been plummeting, it's hard to build an inventory that doesn't deflate to less than what

Murphy's Electronic & Industrial Surplus Warehouse 401 N Johnson Ave. El Cajon, CA 92020 (Near San Diego) Tel: (619) 4447717 Fax: (619) 4446750 WWW: http://www.murphyjunk.com/
8,000 sq. ft. of military and industrial electronics, communications, and misc electronic equipment.
(From Don Davis)
Murphy's is one of the great, oldfashioned military electronic surplus stores. The last one in Southern California! The "front" part of the store is old, musty test equipment. Some radios & aircraft stuff. Good prices on some items, a little high on others. Some components & tubes also.
The "back" room: call for appointment with Murphy. Bring big cash$$$. Nice Watkins Johnson radios, many PRC, VRC radios, test equipment, Janes books, radio guides, antennas, radar sets, transmitters, amps, etc. A real playground. Only for the "serious" browser / purchaser, however. In fact, I don't know why I'm giving up my personal best bet shopping spot to everyone in the world....
3.4) Hayward
Fort Apache Electronics Trading Company, Inc. 31902 Hayman Street Hayward, CA 94544
Vacuum surplus, electronics, and optics are represented in Fort Apache's catalog. If they don't have what you want, you are invited to keep a want list with them.

ECSC is more than a super surplus store... it is a marketing concept in merchandising electronics. We buy and sell surplus, excess and discontinued new and used parts, assemblies and systems. We sell to the general public, and also wholesale in larger quantities. Due to our many years of experience in the industry, we have developed extensive worldwide contacts with major corporations, allowing us to acquire large and varied quantities of inventory. Look for great deals on hard drives, memory, motherboards, CD Roms, software, electronic parts, etc.

It is a wonderful place. More electronic and electrical stuff than most imagine at first. Also lots of valves, gears, motors, fittings, speciality bolts and hardware and all the other stuff they are famous for.
Not really surplus but they have a cool selection of stuff you can't really find anywhere else. They have a good catelog.

This is a nice walk in store with in depth stock of all types of parts, i.e. resistors, caps, wire, transformers, etc. It's a great place to go, but they don't do any mail order.
They have been around since the beginning of time, and most of the staff is very friendly and helpful.
They are located just east of Foothills Parkway, and about a block south of Valmont Ave. If you are in Boulder, this place is worth the trip.

Coming from the north, exit I25s at Fillmore, go east on Fillmore. When you get to Union turn right (south). 2 or 3 miles down will be Palmer Park. Turn left (east) on Palmer Park. OEM is on your right about a mile.
This place was awesome. They had every kind of wire and connector you'd ever need. Tons of connectors and a wide selection of vacuum tubes. Don't miss the old equipment Museum.
(From Douglas Glosson)
This is a store that has a little of everything, both new and used. Kind of a electronic junk store, but interesting to go into. It is all local people.
Take the Fillmore exit from I25, head east approximately 2 to 3 miles, Turn north on Hancock Ave, and go about 1/2 a block. Located on the right in the Venetian Village shopping center.

The 3M Co. in St. Paul has a monthly "silent auction" of equipment from its facilities, held at its Distribution Center at 1080 Hazel Street, Bldg. 410, St. Paul, MN. Basically a mixture of electronic parts, PCs, monitors, office equip., industrial machines, test equipment, shelving, etc. Stuff is placed on pallets, one pallet per bid, (unless it's really huge), with minimum bid of $15. They tend to strategically mix different items together on the pallets in other words, that o'scope you spot may share space on the pallet with a couple monochrome monitors and an office chair. If you win the bid, you've gotta take it all!
The sales are usually the first Mon & Tues of each month, and they contact winning bidders by Thur or Fri of the same week. Contact person is Larry Hendrickson at 6127330282. After you go to one of these, they'll put you on their mailing list and send you a bid list about a week prior to each sale. The auctions draw a lot of buyers from manufacturing people, but the hobbyist can find useful stuff to bid for, and often get it for a reasonable bid.

In the past, they got pallets of test equipment, but recently have been stocking bagged parts and computers. Prices on computers aren't great. Bagged parts are often a good deal, and when they do get in test equipment, it goes for a good price. Feel free to try to negotiate. Sometimes, you get lucky, other times, they are firm. I just wanted to tell you about this place in Albuquerque that anyone with an interest in electronics must visit. It is a surplus/salvage/junk shop that is on the east end of town. This place has tons of dod and doe surplus as well as stuff from the local national labs I also noticed that much of the equipment which had been in use at the (relocated) motorola ceramic filter facility made it to this place as well. the easiest way to find it is to take the I40 exit for tramway and central (first/last exit for Albuquerque's east side then go west on central until you find a large "jones surplus" sign on the n side of the street. You must not miss it.

In east Albuquerque, out the street that runs on the south side of the UNM campus is a surplus/neat stuff kind of store. It's pretty far out east, almost to where the street (Candelaria Street?) meets I40.
If you exit off I25 going east along the south side of campus, you'll come to a 'Y' intersection. Take the south fork and go out to 7800 or so (maybe 7500? I haven't been there in a while) and look for metal rack cabinets in front. The store is in a sixstore building about 100 feet back from the street.

Great for the cold war scavenger or hobbyist. Tends towards fairly old gear; not many newer pieces. All surplus; don't expect shrink wrap and instruction manuals. You kind of missed the surplus scene in NYC by about 10 years. Used to be dozens of places on Canal St. (and below) and on 45th St.
These days there is not much to see. You might want to check out Canal St. anyway, there are still a couple of junk stores and some general weirdness, but nothing like the good old days. Sigh.

WW has been around since 1980, and they have a diverse collection of stuff. It seems to come and go pretty fast, so you can't count on something being there long term. It's not electronic surplus, really, although you'll find some there. They're more of an industrial/retail boneyard, where overstocks and errorsofjudgement go to die. A good place to go if you're looking for stuff to adapt; you might find a kid's toy for ten cents that you can gut for the case and an LED.
They're NOT surplus, just a good source of parts. There's some stuff there that's used or manufacturer's overstocks, but in general it's new parts for sale. They're probably the best available source if you need something specific. They also have stores in Salem and Eugene.
(From Linda Wicklund)
It seems the last few times I tried to buy something from the Beaverton store, on Nimbus, not only were they totally out of stock for hand held tools ( most all of them) but the technical help was completely wrong. Unable to answer any question on several products available. Been going to this store for many many years. It is sad to see it decline this way. I now have outside sources to help me and will only call on Norvac in an emergency.

Like Norvac, a mainline distributor, but with a storefront too. They have a lot of lines, several stores, and used to own some surplus places. Notably, they used to have Western Nut and Bolt in Seattle, but it's since been shut down and dispersed. :( Another good place to go if you need something specific, if it's a line they carry.

But don't bother calling and asking for anything. This is one place that is impossible to catalog and inventory. Stuff comes and goes on a daily basis.
Probably the largest surplus store in the world. Excellent supply of machine parts, end mills, drill bits, rotary files, lathe bits, air tools, and tons of office supplies including furniture, computers, monitors, modems, cables, aircraft fabrics and adhesive tapes, etc. Located just outside of Seattle, Washington, about a 3 hour drive off the Tsawassen ferry.
(From Heinz Breuer)
They have new reduced opening hours: Wednesday and Friday: 11 to 5 Saturday: 10 to 4
They now also take credit cards.
30.3) Seattle
(From Tom Bruhns)
Boeing Surplus sells wire by the pound: $1.25/lb, even for Teflon coax, if they have it. Real pot luck. They also have decent prices on tools. Some tools are new, some used. Look very carefully at the used ones. Boeing can be a good place to get drill bits (but not circuit board size). Decent selection of aluminum sheet, sometimes some aluminum extrusions in useful shapes (like round tubing) but more commonly very special extrusions.
Also, Radar Electric on Western near Seattle Center has some misc. surplus electronics components, and upstairs in the back, some electro mechanical stuff.
(From Mark Zenier)

30.5) Tacoma
(From Mark Zenier)
Electronic Dimensions Puyallup Ave Tacoma, WA
The best for your purposes (and probably the most fun to browse, (especially if you ask for something wierd and he lets you into the back room)) is Electronic Dimensions on Puyallup Avenue in Tacoma, about 30 miles to the south. A wide variety of stuff from 1940's to present. Test Equipment, Radio, components.
(From Marc Olson, 2002)
I was in Electronic Dimensions on March 2, 2002. I had a chance to talk to (owner) Glen Galati; nice guy. He did not complain about a lack of business.
(From Mark Zenier)
In Seattle, there's a store that specializes in Antique Radios. Radio Steve's Old Technology Shop. Just north of Green Lake on Aurora North. Old Electronics and Antique Tools. (Irregular hours.)
Scrap yards With an occasional pile of electronics are:
Boeing Surplus in Kent Some clapped out test equipment. They quit retail sales in the electronics section and now sell most of that by bid lot at auction. Test Equipment, Computers.
Pacific Industrial Seattle, south of the Kingdome on 4th Ave South. and Pacific Iron and Metals a couple of blocks north of Pacific Industrial.
Both are scrap yards that may have something electronic and always have a high entertaiment value if you're into that sort of thing. Or you just want to buy metal decking, ax handles, or a new power block for your purse seiner.
Sci.Electronics FAQ: Surplus: USA 51 of 53

Finally, some of the local new stock distributors have a fair amount of surplus on display or in a side room. Components only for the most part.
Radar Electric Seattle, by the Seattle Center. Best place in town for electronics tools.
Supertronix in Kent, by the Boeing Aerospace facility, a couple miles west of Boeing Surplus. Sort of a Radio Shack on Steroid, similar to Active Electronics.
Electronic Supply just west of the I5 Freeway on North 45th St., west of the University of Washington. Consumer Electronic Repair parts, Batteries.
Electronic Supermart (The folks from United Products) north of the city, in Lynnwood, southwest of the Alderwood Mall. More new parts, less surplus than the old United Products.
Amateur Radio Supply north of Boeing Field on Corson Ave. A little bit of used Ham Gear.
There are also about 4 or so Ham Swapmeets a year in the area, a regular commercial monthy computer swapmeet that rotates between 3 different sites, and a couple of guys that sell test equipment out of their garages. (Anyone know if the guy that sells old Tek stuff in Redmond or Woodenville still has a store?)
30.6) Tukwila
(From Keith Lofstrom)
There is a semiinteresting used software place named "Bruno's" in Tukwila, at the south end of Seattle; worth a stop on the way through.
If your travels take you 25 miles south to Tacoma, there is a surplus store (Electronic Dimensions?) with a lot of military and RF test equipment I found the owner a little disagreeable, though, so I don't have more info.
I have second hand information about a place up in Snohomish county called Electronics Mall; when they were down near Lake Union, they had appropriately decaying electronics gizzies. It is sad that they moved, because they were a couple of blocks from Archie McPhee's on Stone Way, the best Inappropriate Toy Store in the world. Since I bought "electronic surplus" there (a foam plastic rock that makes the sound of shattering glass when it hits something) I will mention Archies as a source of surplus. You need a glowinthedark plastic slug, don't you?
