Surgical Skills for Dental Nurses Aims •To improve dental nursing skills in surgical dental procedures. •To boost confidence in preparing for and assisting in surgical procedures. Objectives •To provide training in the theory and practice for effective nursing in minor oral surgery for Dental Nurses, including care planning, instrument and surgery set-up. •To discuss the rationale behind peri-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing oral surgical procedures. •To discuss the basic understanding of oral anatomy and get familiar with surgical instruments and purpose in order to play an integral part of the surgical procedure. Learning Outcomes •Explore fundamental principles of care planning and patient management for safe and effective hard and soft tissue surgery, in general dental practice. •Reflect and carry out appropriate action to help Dentists involved in minor oral surgery procedures, to improve surgical outcome. •Able to communicate with patients in an effective manner and give appropriate, informative advice and reassurance. •Understanding oral anatomy. •Oral surgical instruments and their intended use. •How to set up a basic surgical tray for surgical extraction. •How to assist efficiently in surgical procedures. •Tips for suctioning. •How to give advice to the patients over the phone before and after tooth extraction. •Understanding patients concern and how to provide appropriate advice. •Post-op instructions – how to make sense. •How to help your dentists in dealing with bleeding. •Dry socket - breaking the myth. •Medical problems which have an impact on oral surgery.
