After 15 months of construction and nearly $10 million in expenditures, on Monday, February 27, 2012, Mercy’s four brand new, state-of-the-art operating rooms were fully supplied, staffed, and put into use! A total of 20 surgical cases were completed during their very first day of “operations” (pun intended!) The new operating rooms are part of a 16,500 square foot addition just added on the south side of Mercy Hospital. The addition also includes new patient recovery areas, a central sterile processing department, and various staff work spaces. “The new addition is just amazing,” said Rachel Chase, OR Manager. “Our operating rooms are state-of-the-art and include features such as full electronic integration, in-room supplies and storage, improved lighting, and ceiling-mounted equipment booms, which create more space and eliminate our old problem of having electrical cords strewn across the floor.” Chase added, “Since our move into the new ORs, surgeons and staff alike have told me how impressed they are with the new facilities and how easy they are to work in.” Lisa Jacobson, DO with Cadillac ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery agrees with Chase’s sentiments. “The enhanced technology, layout and spaciousness of the new ORs are wonderful and welcome assets. Additionally, I’ve noticed the lighting and décor in the recovery areas are very soothing and are sure to enhance our Volume I Spring 2012 patients’ and their families’ overall experience.” The success realized by this project is due in large part to careful research and planning, which involved many stakeholders. According to Mary Neff, Chief Operating Officer and senior leader responsible for the overall project, “We did our homework and visited a number of other hospitals’ ORs prior to designing and constructing our project, so that we could incorporate room layouts, equipment, and other features that would best meet our needs.” Neff added, “Many people worked long and hard to make this first phase a big success. Pastor Ed Gilbert is no stranger to music or the guitar. In his younger days, before he entered the pastorate Ed worked in Nashville, Tennessee as a professional studio musician, playing the bass guitar. He often played with Grand Old Opry stars when their regular band members were unavailable to perform. Unfortunately, it was during his Nashville career that Ed nearly lost everything by developing a substance abuse addiction. Through his recovery Ed discovered an ability to connect and communicate with children, especially through music. Using his talent in the classroom, Ed worked in an intermediate school district for several years, providing counseling and educational lessons to developmentally disabled children.

This experience led to Ed’s next segue in life, serving as a substance abuse therapist in an inpatient hospital setting. It was during this time that Ed also realized his calling to the ministry. After completing his education, Pastor Ed worked as a minister and planted several small churches here and there before moving to Cadillac in 1998. Pastor Ed joined Mercy Hospital in 2001 and since then, has provided chaplaincy and spiritual care services to patients, families and Mercy associates alike. Pastor Ed’s musical talents became evident early in his Mercy career, through his occasional appearances at meetings with guitar in hand, but there never seemed to be enough time to play

regularly. Additionally, while he owned and played several guitars, he didn’t have a classical model, which plays quietly and is best suited to the small hospital room setting. Finally, after some convincing by Bob Doering, Director of Mission Services, Pastor Ed agreed it was time to incorporate his guitar-playing talents into his regular spiritual care activities at Mercy. Upon hearing about this development and the need to purchase a classical guitar, donors Katy and Chris Huckle decided to put “Operation Mercy Guitar” into action! Within a week of their donation, a classical guitar was acquired, just in time for Pastor Ed and his wife Phyllis to sing Christmas carols to Mercy patients and their families on Christmas morning. Delighted with his new tool, Pastor Ed is now sharing his musical gift throughout the hospital. He plays for groups at special events and inpatient rooms upon invitation, when his extraordinary musical ministry is just what the doctor ordered. He says, “In the last month I’ve left my office door open and started playing. People have stopped in and commented how the music has ministered at just the right time to them.” John MacLeod, President and CEO at Mercy commented, “Consistent with our mission, at Mercy we believe in healing the spirit, as well as the mind and body. Thanks to Chris and Katy’s thoughtful gift, a musical talent has been rediscovered at Mercy that is bringing joy and peace to many.”

Outens leave $200,000 bequest to Mercy Hospital Cadillac Foundation A bequest is an extraordinary gift, given by special people who desire to make a difference in the lives of others. A bequest transcends the lives of its donors and demonstrates an ultimate commitment to a non-profit organization’s mission and services. Many times, a bequest is also preceded by a direct connec-tion or experience between the donor and the organi-zation. So it was with the bequest received by Mercy Hospital from the estate of John and Mabel Outen in 2008. John Outen was a patient at Mercy Hospital in the early 1990’s. At that time, John and his wife Mabel were both retired and living in Reed City, Mabel’s home town. As a boy, John experienced an abdominal injury that had long ago healed, but resulted in com-plications that were now causing serious problems. Then in his early 80s, John was sent by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in need of emergency surgery, which was performed by Dr. Glenn Verbrugge. According to his niece, Wava Woods, “Uncle John never forgot the great care that he received from Mer-cy Hospital and his physicians, Dr. Verbrugge and Dr. Stehouwer. At Uncle John’s age, they weren’t sure if he would pull through the surgery, but he did and then lived another 20 years to reach the age of 102!” John and Mabel Outen spent their working lives liv-ing in the Pontiac area. Following the Great Depres-

sion, John worked for many years in the automotive industry. Mabel was an elementary school teacher for 36 years. Both were also very active with a variety of hobbies. John was an avid gardener, investor, and en-joyed home improvement projects. Mabel loved art, music, sewing, and crafting projects by hand. Mabel passed away before John in January 2004 but before her death, a passion for helping others had al-ready been demonstrated by the college scholarship program she and John established at the Osceola County Community Foundation. Before his passing in 2007, John identified several charities to benefit from his and Mabel’s lifetime of hard work. Remembering his experience at Mercy, John elected to leave a $200,000 gift to the Mercy Hospital Cadillac Founda-tion. The Outen bequest was combined with the Pell be-quest and is now endowed. Together, these funds are invested to produce earnings, which are distributed to Mercy Hospital annually to fund nursing scholarships, equipment for the Pell Imaging Center and other facili-ty and medical equipment purchases as needed. “I’m sad that Uncle John and Aunt Mabel aren’t here to see the difference their gift is making at Mercy Hos-pital, but I know they would both be very proud of how it has been invested to generate earnings for the benefit of Mercy and its patients,” said Woods.

hours making sure there was always a smooth interface between current hospital operations and the new construction.” Now that the addition is complete, work has shifted to renovating space in the old surgery department. When it is finished, all functions will be grouped together for “one-stop-shopping” on the hospital’s first floor. That means a patient and his/her family will enter the department on the first floor and stay there the entire time for his/her outpatient surgical experience. According to Mary Rosser, Patient Experience Manager, “The new center offers our patients and families what matters to them most - a seamless surgical experience in a warm and healing environment that supports comfort, privacy, and convenience.” Completion of the entire project is expected by August, 2012. A public open house is planned to celebrate the new combined facilities at that time.

Please join us for the 9th annual Mercy Golf Ball on June 9, 2012 Spring is nearly upon us and before we know it, the ninth annual Mercy Golf Ball will be here. If you’ve yet to join us, we’ve heard from a number of repeat par-ticipants that the Mercy Golf Ball is one of Cadillac’s premiere golf tournaments. Perhaps 2012 will be your opportunity to discover why the Mercy Golf Ball is a favorite of over 130 golfers! In addition to offering outstanding golf tournaments, great camaraderie, and coveted bragging rights, the Mercy Golf Ball is the foundation’s one and only fund-raising event of the year, generating critical dollars to update medical equipment and facilities. All proceeds from this year’s Golf Ball will be used to purchase up-dated infant warmers for the obstetrics department. Golfers may choose from two venues, each with their own unique tournament. At McGuire’s Resort, die-hard golfers register as two-person teams and play 27 holes organized by flight. Because McGuire’s is home to the 18-hole Spruce and 9-hole Norway courses, all 27 holes are played just once. Those looking for 18 holes of play will enjoy the four-person team scramble at the Cadillac Country Club (CCC.) The CCC was founded in 1910 and features a par 70 course that challenges golfers of all skill levels. Each tournament awards prizes to the winning teams, as well as a variety of proximity prizes, such as longest drive and closest to the pin. Golfers and non-golfers alike are encouraged to join the casual after-golf reception at McGuire’s Resort, located in the Terrace Room restaurant. This is a great opportunity to join friends and unwind after a fun-filled day of golf. At the reception, tournament winners and proximity prize winners are announced. A limited silent auction is also available, featuring golfing packages and
