POWDER-FREE MEDLINE’S SYNTHETIC POLYMER COATINGS ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR POWDER

COStLY AND HARMFUL RISKS OF POWDERDespite being easy to don and low in price, research has uncovered numerous risks and complications associated with powdered gloves. Powder easily detaches from the surface of gloves, acting as a vehicle for bacteria and latex proteins. This contaminated powder can easily find its way to the patient. Documented risks and complications related to powder include:

• Adhesions

• Anaphylaxis

• Asthma

• Blocked Vessels

• Conjunctivitis

• Contact Dermatitis

• Delayed Wound Healing

• Enhanced Bacteria Growth

• Granulomas

• Instrument Contamination

• Joint Inflammation

• Scarring

• Surgical Site Infections

tRANSItION tO POWDER-FREE FOR A SAFER OPERAtING ROOMYears ago, surgical gloves dusted with medical grade powder were the only option. The powder coating would act like millions of miniature ball bearings, allowing the glove to easily slide over the hand. As the only option for decades, surgeons around the world became accustomed to using powdered latex gloves.

A CHANGE FOR tHE bEttER Today, the market continues to evolve with new powder-free technology. Powdered surgical gloves are banned in many hospitals around the world and countries including Germany, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the UK are almost entirely powder-free. The use of powdered medical gloves around the world continues to decrease every year, substituted by safer powder-free options. One study concluded that the cost of washing the powdered gloves prior to use is at least seven times higher than the cost of using powder-free gloves.1

A SAFER ALtERNAtIVE tO POWDERMedline offers a comprehensive range of powder-free gloves with synthetic polymer coatings that bond to the inner surface of the glove and create a smooth surface for effortless dry or damp hand donning. They also undergo additional protein and chemical leaching stages, decreasing the sensitizing potential compared to powdered latex gloves.

Organizations advocating the use of powder-free gloves

• American College of Surgeons

• Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses

• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

• American Nurses Association

• National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health

• Health and Safety Executive United Kingdom

“the cost of washing the powdered gloves prior to use has been reported as being at least seven times higher than the cost of using powder-free gloves.”1

ALOEtOUCH

In 1999, Medline changed the industry by patenting a process to bring the moisturizing properties of aloe vera to medical gloves.

INNOVAtION tHAt SOOtHES HANDSHealthcare providers must constantly wash their hands and wear gloves as an infection control measure. Repeated glove use and exposure to harsh chemicals can lead to skin irritation. Glove powder can dry out skin and make these problems even worse. Lotions and creams can help, but many health care workers must visit occupational health and dermatologists, and may be forced to take time off to allow their skin condition to improve, costing hospitals money. Thankfully, there’s another way to keep your hard working hands healthy.

How it worksIn 1999, Medline changed the industry by patenting a process to bring the moisturizing properties of aloe vera to medical gloves. Aloetouch technology works by extracting 100% pure organic aloe vera gel directly from the plant, freeze-drying it, and evenly applying it to the inner surface of the glove. The glove wearer’s body heat activates the aloe coating to create a therapeutic moisturizing experience.

the preferred glove of hospitalsIn hospital surveys, respondents preferred Aloetouch gloves to their current glove and noticed a significant difference in how their hands felt after the trial period.2 Independent clinical studies have also proven the efficacy of aloe coated gloves in moisturizing and improving skin condition.3 Today, Medline is the world’s leader in therapeutic medical gloves, with billions of aloe-coated exam and surgical gloves used since their introduction in 1999.

LAtEx SAFEtY MEDLINE IS THE ONLY SURGICAL GLOVE COMPANY TO MAKE IT’S OWN RAW MATERIAL POLYISOPRENE

It is estimated that as many as 17% of healthcare workers may be allergic to latex compared to 1 to 6% of the general population.

REAP tHE bENEFItS OF GOING LAtEx-FREEConcern over the complications of latex allergies is driving many healthcare facilities to eliminate the latex products, particularly gloves in their hospitals. Although powder-free latex gloves can help avoid many complications, even low-protein powder-free latex gloves are not completely safe. the only way to truly eliminate latex-related risks is to avoid using latex entirely and switch to synthetics. When all of the risks, commonly overlooked hidden costs, and the latest synthetic options are considered, implementing a 100% latex-free environment is easier to justify than you think.

Get the Facts About Latex Allergies

• As a healthcare worker, continued exposure to latex increases your risk of developing the allergy and there is no cure.

• It is estimated that as many as 18% of healthcare workers may be allergic to latex compared to 1 to 6% of the general population.

• In addition to healthcare workers, children with spina bifida, people with urinary tract abnormalities, and people who undergo multiple surgeries or medical procedures are more likely to develop a latex allergy due to more frequent exposure.

• Symptoms include watery or itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, wheezing, hives, welts, rashes, itching, and swelling.

• Severe reactions (anaphylactic shock) can cause breathing problems, chest tightness, swelling of the throat or tongue, and other health risks.

• Powder-free latex gloves may be low in proteins but can still cause reactions and should never be used on anyone with a latex allergy.

the Hidden Costs Of Latex

• Additional OR teardown costs

• Contaminated disposable products and implants

• Idle OR time while room is decontaminated

• Re-sterilization for reusable products

• Occupational health visits and medical treatment for staff

• Worker’s compensation claims

SENSICARE

9www.medl ine.com

Today, the SensiCare portfolio continues to evolve with standard and specialty options to suit virtually any clinical tasks. With so many choices, going latex-free is easier than ever before. In fact, the average clinical acceptance rate for SensiCare is over 95%. It’s no wonder that SensiCare continues to outgrow the latex-free market segment and is used by some of the most prestigious hospitals in the world.

ISOLEx™ RAW MAtERIAL — MADE IN USA Medline is the only surgical glove company that manufactures its own raw material polyisoprene. Unlike other companies who rely on third party suppliers for their polyisoprene needs, Medline’s advantage is its control over research and development, quality, supply, and cost as a result of vertical integration.

In an effort to create awareness for the latex allergy, Medline offers its BE FREE DAY. At no cost to the facility, we’ll provide a day’s worth of SensiCare surgical gloves. This is a no pressure opportunity to introduce surgeons and staff to the latest latex-free surgical glove technology.

SENSICARE® – AS CLOSE tO LAtEx AS LAtEx-FREE CAN bEIn the late 1990s, SensiCare revolutionized the industry as the first synthetic Polyisoprene surgical glove in the world. Compared to first generation synthetic gloves made from Neoprene which are commonly used only for patients and staff with documented latex allergies, Medline’s proprietary Isolex™ formulation provides exceptional comfort and performance to natural rubber latex. For the first time in history, hospitals searching for an alternative to latex surgical gloves were able to achieve an important safety initiative while satisfying the clinical requirements of the surgical staff.

DOUbLE-GLOVINGDECREASE CROSS CONTAMINATION RISKS DURING

SURGERY WITH UNDERGLOVES FROM MEDLINE

WHY IS DOUbLE-GLOVING IMPORtANt?

The risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens is a major concern for surgeons and operating room staff. Although often undetectable to the human eye, even microperforations in surgical gloves are large enough to allow pathogens to pass between the glove wearer and the patient and cause infection. A recent study reported that over 80% of all surgical glove perforations go unnoticed.4 Another study showed that the incidence of glove microperforations increased with duration of wear.5 A proven method to reduce these risks is to double glove with a dark colored underglove.

Medline Underglove Features & Benefits:• Low-protein latex and synthetic polyisoprene options available • Powder-free and coated with pure aloe vera to moisturize skin • Synthetic polymer coating for effortless damp hand donning and double gloving • Constructed on our surgeon preference-inspired formers to minimize hand fatigue • Thinner than standard gloves to enhance sensitivity

HOW DOES tHE DOUbLE GLOVING SYStEM WORK?

• The wearer dons the specially designed darker colored underglove as the first layer in protection followed by a light colored or translucent overglove.

• In the event that the outer glove is breached during surgery, blood and other fluids seep between the two glove layers, and the contrasting color of the dark green underglove alerts the wearer to change gloves.

• Changing gloves immediately following the breach minimizes the risk of transmission of pathogens between the wearer and the patient.8

bEttER PROtECtION. FAStER IDENtIFICAtION.

• A study by the American College of Surgeons showed double gloving reduces the risk of exposure to patient blood by as much as 87% when the outer glove is punctured.6

• According to a clinical study in the AORN Journal, when using a contrasting color underglove, 84% of perforations were recognized in an average of 22 seconds, whereas 8% of perforations were identified in 47 seconds when using a single glove.7
