These strain gauges are intended for measuring strain on concrete surfaces and on structural steel members like arches, struts, reinforcement bars or sheet piles. The measurements are used to determine structural loads and stress.
The reliable VW-technology enables the sensor to be applied in projects where long-term stability, robustness and insensitivity to electromagnetic interference are required.
Since we are dealing with a frequency transmission, sensors may be read remotely, more than 500m away from their location, without any loss of information due to long cables.

The sensors are based on the vibration wire principle, where a prestressed wire is fixed between two end blocks. The mounting blocks are either welded on a steel surface or are fixed with rebar bolts, bonded in drill holes.
Changes in strain between the mounting blocks will compress or tension the wire. The strain state is measured by plucking the wire and determination of the resonant frequency of the stressed wire using an electromagnetic coil.
Since the resonant frequency is slightly dependent on temperature and to monitor the temperature of the embedment, which probably also effects the stress, a thermistor is integrated.
