Color MattersThree simple ideas helped create a palette thatworks. By looking at the color or hue, the value fromlight to dark, and the range a color has to crossover color families, our hard surface offering createsa common color logic shared across material types.
Wherever you find inspiration, our hard surfaceoffering has a choice for you: warm or cool; red, green, blue or yellow; light to dark.
As color theory goes, the closer a color gets toneutral the greater its ability to cross over multiplecolor families. Our neutral palette does that. Addsome metallics to the mix and you have neutralcolors that work in any space.
Choice MattersIt all works together. And we meant for that tohappen. Finishes coordinate - laminate colors andpatterns are created to match with or coordinatewith paint and plastic colors. Our textiles weredesigned to work with our hard surfaces.
Choose any architectural elements for a space, andour surfaces will coordinate with them.
Creativity MattersAt the end of the day, it's all about you.
At first glance, the hard surfaces offering mayappear to be a group of simple beiges and greys. Itis; this offering of crisp, clear neutrals is designed tohelp the design professional by facilitating, notinhibiting, design freedom in their environments. Awide range of textiles offer the ability to make astatement and add color within a space. Anything ispossible - well, almost anything - and if there is aneed for a unique solution that our regular offeringdoes not address, our Custom Surfaces programcan help satisfy your creativity.
The Earth MattersWe live by a set of environmental design objectivesto guide our product development work. Theseobjectives include product durability, recycledcontent and recyclability, elimination of harmfulmaterials and indoor air quality impact, use ofsustainably harvested woods, reduction of energyuse, and product end of life strategies. These objec-tives are intended to drive us forward so that eachnew product will have stronger environmentalproperties than the one it replaces.

Our Surface MaterialsWe have revamped our offering into an easy tounderstand availability framework.- Steelcase Surfaces- Select Surfaces- Custom Surfaces
Steelcase SurfacesTimeless, tried and true.
These are the surface choices that make upour standard offering. Steelcase Surfaces arecategorized into three life cycle categories:
1) Active: Current surfaces that we activelypromote. Classics - our “go to” designs, made forstandardization, with a minimum 10 year avail-ability and 12 year warranty. Inspire - surfacematerials with unique attributes, like aesthetics, environmental properties, etc., with a minimum 5year availability and 12 year warranty.
2) Established: Surfaces that have been retainedto support customers who have standardized onthese colors. No cull date is established.Longevity varies.
3) Transitional: Surfaces with an identified end oflife timeframe. Whenever possible, cull dateshave been established.
Select SurfacesTrend-driven choices. More leading edge materials.Ease of use.
We have expanded our ability to offer choice bypartnering with “best in class” companies to usetheir products on ours in a facilitated way. Notesting, no calculating yardage, and no adding a lineitem for the extra textile cost; all of this has alreadybeen done. It is our plan to continue to grow thisoffering so that we continue to make it easy andbeautiful to use Steelcase.
DesigntexIt all starts with Designtex. We’ve had a “Graded-In”program with Designtex for years, but found that theprocess of introducing them to work like a standardtextile (by assigning a Steelcase finish number, forstarters) was inhibiting the ability to offer more oftheir textiles on more of our products, and to do somore frequently. All Select Surfaces products fromDesigntex, including finishes formerly supportedwith four digit Steelcase finish numbers, are nowordered only via the Select Surfaces model. Pleasesee ordering information on page 8 for specifics.
GabrielOne of two new offerings under Select Surfaces is acollection of seating fabrics from a niche companythat develops, manufactures, and sells upholsteryfabrics out of Europe. With the addition of Gabriel tothe Select Surfaces offering, we extend our designchoice and improve global consistency.
KvadratThe second of the new offerings comes fromKvadrat. Also a European supplier, Kvadrat createshigh quality, contemporary textiles, and textile-related products. This collection of seating uphol-stery fabrics builds on our global offering andleverages industry leaders on a global scale.
PollackPollack, a boutique company and one of the originalsuppliers in the Select Surfaces offering, continuesto play a key role in the offering. With Pollack’sunique design approach to textile development, weoffer a beautiful collection of seating upholsterytextiles. The ordering information can be found onpage 8.
Accent PaintsAccent paints allow customers to add trend-drivencolor to painted surfaces. These Price Group 3 pre-matched selections are available without thePerfectMatch registration fee. If one of the colorsphases out of the program, customers can continueto specify these finishes without being charged aregistration fee. It is our intention to evolve thiscollection often, to ensure that fresh new colors arealways available. That is one of the hallmarks ofSelect Surfaces - offering trend-driven, leading edgematerial choices in a facilitated way to enhancespaces that work.
Signature PlasticsSignature Plastics allow customers to create spacesolutions that are consistent with their own brand. These plastic color choices are available for use onNode and Move for an additional upcharge. Thenine new finish options were developed to matchsome of the most commonly used colors inuniversity and corporate logos. These pre-testedcolors can be ordered using standard finish codes, but may have extended leadtimes.
Composite VeneersNew wood composite veneers are now available toorder. These composites have established pricing(Wood 1 price group) and have been pre-tested andpreapproved on select Steelcase product lines. Ordering Select Surfaces – CompositeVeneersTo order a Composite Veneer available in the SelectSurfaces offering, use the following steps:
1) Fill out a COMPOSITE request form for thedesired finish, making sure you indicate howlarge your project will be using units or dollarvolume at list. The COMPOSITE request formsare available in printed form on Adstock and inelectronic form on The Village or Steelcase.com.The (normal) $425 fee does not apply if you areordering a composite with a clear-coat finish.Incomplete forms will be rejected as therequested information is critical to the orderprocess for these materials (this step is used toestimate how much veneer is required tocomplete your job). Please sign the form afterreading about the characteristics of compositeveneers and submit to the Steelcase Finish Lab.The size of your project may affect leadtimesbased on availability of the requested material
NOTE: If you desire a stain to be placed on theselected composite, you must use the standardCUSTOMIZ request process.
2) After submitting your request to the SteelcaseFinish Lab, you will receive authorization to usethe particular finish, which features a clear-coatfinish.
3) After being authorized, place your order as younormally would for any other veneer finish, calling out the appropriate finish code. See belowfor a list of finish codes available through theoffering.
NOTE: Solid nosings or wood integral pulls arenot available for use with composite veneers -specify edgeband solutions only. For example, specify Elective Elements’ square edgeworksurface instead of the solid-nosing waterfalledge.
The following finishes are now available through theComposite Veneer offering:
Wood Group 13HGX QC/OP Oak Composite3HVX QC/OP Walnut Composite3JDX FC/OP Oak Composite3JEX QC/OP Maple Composite3JFX FC/OP Maple Composite3JGX QC/OP Cherry Composite 3JHX FC/OP Cherry Composite 3JJX FC/OP Walnut Composite
Note: To understand more about composite ordering, leadtimes, and pricing, please consult the compositesign-off sheet available through Steelcase adver-tising stock, form number 14-0000141. A sign-offsheet is required prior to orders being accepted forcomposite projects.
Note: Known for their color consistency, compositeveneers feature a clear coat finish applied in thefinishing process. Because the veneers are sourcedin large lots, overall color within a specific purchaseorder should have minimal color inconsistency. However, composite customers should know thatcolors may vary slightly from dye lot to dye lot. Thisinconsistency may be noticed when replacementpieces are ordered that may be from different dyelots, or when a new project phase is installed. Alsonote that composite veneers tend to fade andlighten overtime, especially with sun exposure.

Paint brings color to metal surfaces andprovides them with a high-quality finish thatis fade and chip resistant.
• Smooth paints provide saturated colorto painted surfaces. Gloss levels rangefrom 25% to 40%.
• Textured paints provide a subtle visual and tactile enhancement to paintedsurfaces. Textured paints have a 6% glosslevel.
• Metallic paints bring richness topainted surfaces by the inclusion in thepaint of tiny pieces of reflective material.Metallic paints are available, in mostcases, with an upcharge. Please seeindividual product specification guides forthese Price Group 2 upcharges. Metallicpaints have a 40% gloss level.
• Architectural paints are specificallydesigned for use on Privacy Wall. ThesePrice Group 1 paints have a 20% glosslevel.
• Accessory paints are available onselect product lines and accessory parts. These Price Group 2 high gloss finishesoffer an elegant appearance through agloss level of 85%.
Laminates are constructed by uniting twoor more layers of resin-saturated papertogether and sealing them with heat and/orpressure creating an attractive yet durablework surface. Note: Due to the naturalvariation of woodgrain color and texture, thematch between woodgrain laminates andwood finishes will be a commerciallyacceptable match, rather than an exactmatch.
• High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) is made up of a paper-thin layer of adecorative or solid impregnated sheet witha clear overlay and three to five additionalpieces of impregnated kraft paper. Thesematerials are fused together forming a solidlaminate sheet. High-Pressure Laminate isbonded to board substrate using a water-based adhesive. These laminates meet orexceed all NEMA test standards for high-pressure laminates.
• Low-Pressure Laminate (LPL) is made up of a paper-thin layer of adecorative or solid sheet fused to particle-board or medium density fiberboard. Low-Pressure Laminates do not meet NEMAspecification requirements, scratch resis-tance, or ball drop tests.
Plastics are used for many product parts, ranging from seating shells and table edgesto grommets and wire managers.
• Systems plastics include a widevariety of product parts. Some of theseparts appear on the product in closeproximity to laminates. This is especiallytrue of filler strips, edge bands, andgrommets. For this reason, these systemsplastics are available in colors to match or coordinate with laminates and paints.Additional systems plastics are designedto coordinate with the textiles, paints, andother surface materials in the program.
• Seating plastics are designed for seating shells, including stacking chairs. These plastics are strong, durable, andare available in integral colors tocoordinate with other finishes in theSteelcase Surface Materials Program.
Coatings provide color choices for metaland fiberboard substrates.
• Seating coatings are high-wear coatings that provide color choices for the metal components of select seating products.
Metal finishes are designed for use onspecific metal parts such as hardware onselected Steelcase product lines. They offera high-aesthetic, high-value appearance, and are available in colors to coordinatewith other finishes in the Steelcase SurfaceMaterials Program.
Woods include Cherry, Maple, Oak, andWalnut veneers and solids in a palette oflight, medium, and dark tones. Additionalwood finishes on exotic veneer areavailable on select products. Wood is anatural material and variations will occur incolor, grain structure, and texture.
Premium VeneersA selection of Premium Veneers in thiscollection are available on most Steelcasebrand products. The collection is Graded-Inas Wood Group 2 and Wood Group 3,and supported like standard veneers tomake ordering easy. Please see theSteelcase surface materials section onvillage.steelcase.com for sample informationand product line availability. All PremiumVeneers are in clear-coat.
Wood Finishes
• Full-fill finish is a medium-glosswood finish that fills the grain texture, yet allows the grain pattern to be seen. The wood has a lustrous, satiny lookand it is smooth to the touch. Full-fillfinishes are available on worksurfacesonly. Finish numbers that end with a 4have a full-fill finish.
• Open-pore finish is a medium-glosswood finish. The woodgrain texture isvisible to the eye and distinguishable tothe touch. Finish numbers that end witha 2 have an open-pore finish.
Veneers and solids• Wood will develop a deep, rich patina
over time as the wood ages. Mineralstreaks, gum pockets, and pin knots aresome of the unique characteristics that arevisible in veneers and solids.
• A solid wood furniture componentis, as the name implies, natural woodthroughout the whole wood part. Panel topcaps and end trim and worksurface edgesare examples of solid wood components.
• A veneer is a thin sheet of wood that is used as the outer surface material toachieve a wood aesthetic.

Taber Abrasion Test
Purpose: To establish that Steelcasestandard textiles meet or exceed industrystandards for wear.
General Description: The TaberAbrasion test is used in the contractfurniture industry, but not as often as theWyzenbeek test. Steelcase fabrics aretested with both methods to meet allindustry standards.
The test measurement is given in cycles, which indicate how many abrasive revolu-tions can be applied to a fabric before thefirst yarn or fibers begin to break.
The Taber Abrasion test is used both forseating upholstery and vertical surfacefabrics.
• Steelcase seating upholstery fabrics mustpass a minimum of 300 cycles. ManySteelcase fabrics have Taber readingsthat are much higher, indicating a highcapacity for wear.
• Steelcase vertical surface fabrics mustpass a minimum of 150 cycles. Thesefabrics are not subject to the same degreeof wear as seating upholstery, and aTaber reading of 150 cycles is acceptable.
Procedure: The test is performed on aTaber Abrasion machine. A square of thefabric to be tested is mounted on a flat, circular specimen holder, which is thenrotated against a pair of abrasive wheels. A vacuum system removes abradedparticles, and a counter indicates thenumber of revolutions completed. After a predetermined number of revolutions (or cycles), the specimen is removed andexamined for pilling and wear under amicroscope. The number of cycles isincreased until the sample shows signs of yarn or fabric wear.
Test Results:cSee pages 80–88 for test results forspecific fabrics.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories.
Test Standards
The Taber abrasion tester is used for bothseating upholstery and vertical surfacetextiles to test fabric wear.
Fabric
June 2015
Surface Materials Reference Manual cTest Standards, continued 73
Purpose: To establish that Steelcasestandard textiles meet or exceed industrystandards for wear.
General Description: The Wyzenbeektest is the most commonly used abrasiontest in the contract furniture industry.Steelcase fabrics are tested with both thismethod and the Taber Abrasion test to meetall industry standards.
The test measurement is given in doublerubs, which indicate how many abrasionscan be applied to the fabric before it beginsto show loose threads or other signs ofobvious wear.
The Wyzenbeek Abrasion test is primarilyfor seating upholstery fabrics, but it can alsobe used to test vertical surface fabrics.
• Steelcase vertical surface fabrics aretested with the Taber Abrasion test only.Wyzenbeek testing for vertical surfacefabrics is available only on request.
Procedure: Four specimens of the fabricto be tested are mounted on a foamsubstrate. Each sample is rubbed by anabrading surface on an oscillating cylinder. The abrading surface is wire screen meshor cotton duck. Two specimens are tested inthe warp direction, and two are tested in thefill direction.
A counter indicates the number of doublerubs (cycles) completed. The specimen isexamined for wear at 3,000 double rubintervals. Testing continues until the sampleshows signs of wear.
Steelcase performs this test using cottonduck; results for wire screen mesh tests are available on request.
Test Results:cSee pages 80–88 for test results forspecific fabrics.
Testing Facility: Tests are performedin either the Steelcase laboratories orindependent laboratories.
UL Flammability Test
ASTM E-84, UL Standard
Purpose: To establish that Steelcasevertical surface fabrics meet or exceedindustry standards for fire safety. Important:This is a complete product assembly test. Therefore, an individual fabric alone is nottested by this test method.
General Description: The FlammabilityASTM E-84 test determines the compar-ative burning behavior of exposed verticalsurface textiles on assembled products. Thetest measurement is given as the maximumdistance and time a flame travels across anignited sample and the extent that smoke isgenerated.
All Steelcase vertical surface fabrics aretested, and must meet or exceed the UL or Building Code standard. When COMfabrics are specified, Steelcase makes no claims of flammability resistance andassumes no liability, unless the fabrics aretested in UL laboratories. Steelcase will notapply any vertical surface fabrics toproducts unless they meet UL requirements.
Procedure: Textiles are tested on actualproducts.
A vertical surface textile sample is placedon the product in a fire test chamber 25 feetlong. Two gas burners then deliver flamesupward against the surface of the sample. The fabric is allowed to burn for ten minutesand is observed through windows in thechamber’s sides.
Test Results:cSee pages 80–88 for test results forspecific fabrics.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories or independentlaboratories.
Test Standards
Wyzenbeek Abrasion test is the mostcommon abrasion test used in the contracttextile industry. Steelcase uses theWyzenbeek method for seating upholsteryto test fabric wear.
Purpose: To establish which Steelcaseseating model combinations and standardupholstery meet California Technical Bulletin133 (TB 133) requirements. Important: This is a complete product assembly test. Therefore, an individual fabric is not TB 133 approved.
General Description: CaliforniaTechnical Bulletin 133 (TB 133) is a fullscale fire test for seating products manufac-tured for use in certain public buildings. The test measures the amount of heatgenerated and the rate at which it isgenerated. In addition smoke opacity, carbon monoxide generation, and temper-ature are measured in the test room, as well as the weight loss of the product beingtested. Test criteria have been developedthat set limits on each of the measurementsthat are listed.
When COM fabrics are specified, Steelcasemakes no claims of flammability resistanceand assumes no liability unless the fabricsand seating model are evaluated inindependent laboratories. cSee page 117 for more information on fire code seating.
Procedure: TB 133 tests furniture thatincludes all of its essential features. Afinished piece of furniture is placed in a testroom and ignited by a gas ignition burner.
Testing Facility: State Department ofConsumer Affairs, Bureau of Electronic andAppliance Repair, Home Furnishing andThermal Insulation.
California Technical Bulletin117–2013
Purpose: To establish that all standardSteelcase seating textiles meet or exceedindustry standards for flammability.
General Description: This is a simpletest that takes place in a standard flamma-bility cabinet. All Steelcase textiles mustpass this test. When COM fabrics arespecified, Steelcase makes no claims offlammability resistance and assumes noliability, unless the fabrics are tested inSteelcase laboratories.cSee page 117 for more information on fire code seating.
Procedure: The material is evaluated byplacing the fabric over standard polyure -
thane foam. A lighted cigarette is placed inthe crevice formed by the vertical back andhorizontal seat cushion. Smoldering resis-tance is measured by certain criteria todetermine compliance.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories.
Weight of Woven Fabric Test
Purpose: To determine the weight offabrics per linear yard.
General Description: Steelcase weighswoven fabrics to ensure that they meet orexceed industry standards and to ensureproduct consistency. Fabric weights mayvary slightly from lot to lot due to productionand processing variations.
Procedure: Fabric is cut to a one squarefoot size, folded, weighed to the nearest 0.1 ounce, and the weight is recorded.Weighing occurs under standard controlledconditions for temperature and humidity.
Test Results:cSee pages 80–88 for test results forspecific fabrics.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories.

Purpose: To establish that the dyes fromtextiles will not be transferred to othersurfaces, such as clothing and othersurfaces in the environment, by rubbing orrepeated contact.
General Description: This test isapplicable to all colored textiles, whetherdyed, printed, or otherwise colored.Steelcase tests fabrics for two types ofcrocking: dry (color transfer from a dryspecimen) and wet (color transfer from aspecimen that has been saturated withdistilled water).
All Steelcase standard textiles meet orexceed industry standards for wet and drycrocking.
Procedure: The colorfastness to crockingtests require two samples of the fabric to betested (one sample each for the dry and wettests). Both tests use a standard crockmeter, which holds the sample in place and thenrubs it against a white test cloth, for 10 rubs, under controlled conditions.
In the dry crocking test, the sample whitecloth is removed at the completion of thetest, and any color that has transferred to itis assessed by comparison with the AATCC(American Association of Textile Chemistsand Colorists) Chromatic TransferenceScale or Grey Scale for Staining.
The same procedure is followed for the wetcrocking test, only a specific portion of thetest sample is saturated with distilled waterbefore the rubs begin. At the completion ofthe test the white cloth is removed andallowed to dry before comparison with theAATCC Chromatic Transference Scale orGrey Scale for Staining.
Test Results: Test results are availableon request.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories.
Colorfastness to Light
Purpose: To establish that Steelcasestandard textiles will retain their color aftercontinuous exposure to light.
General Description: The colorfastnessto light test is applicable to all Steelcasestandard textiles and for colorants, finishes, and treatments applied to textile materials.
Colorfastness for all Steelcase textiles isClass 4 or better, which meets or exceedsindustry standards.
Procedure: The colorfastness to light test requires one sample of the fabric to betested. The specimen is mounted on aholder and a portion of it is covered, toprovide comparison to the exposed area. The specimen is then continuously exposedto the light of a carbon arc lamp with aspecified output of ultraviolet light at acontrolled distance for 40 hours. At thecompletion of the test the specimen isuncovered, removed, and examined forvisible fade.
Test Results:cSee pages 80–88 for test results forspecific fabrics.
Testing Facility: Tests are performed inthe Steelcase laboratories.
ACT Textile Performance Guidelines
The Association for Contract Textilesaddresses issues related to contract fabrics.ACT member companies focus their busi-ness on the contract interiors market. Thismarket is important to Steelcase and we arean associate member of the Association forContract Textiles.
Steelcase supports the Association forContract Textiles performance guidelines. The surface materials sampling programshows the ACT symbols because our mate-rials meet or exceed the ACT performanceguidelines. Steelcase materials are tested tomeet Steelcase test standards and the ACTperformance guidelines.
The six symbols give end-users perfor-mance information in a visual way. Thesymbols, product application, the minimumtest criteria that the materials pass, and adescription of the tests are all listed on pages 76–78. This information comes fromthe ACT Textile Performance GuidelinesBooklet.

Flame resistance refers to a fabric’sability to resist burning.
The flammability test is dictated by the end-use for the fabric.
The two testing methods most commonlyused to measure flame resistance are theTunnel Test (ASTM E-84) and the CoverFabric Test (used by California Bulletin117–2013).
In the Tunnel Test, the fabric to be evalua -ted is clamped (unadhered method) orglued (adhered method) to a substrate. Thesubstrate is placed on the ceiling of the testchamber and ignited by a flame from below. The fabric sample is then evaluated for thedensity of the smoke formed, the amount ofthe fuel contributed and the extent of theflame spread. Based on these factors, arating is established.
In the Cover Fabric Test, the fabric to beevaluated is placed over standardpolyurethane foam and a lighted cigarette isplaced in the crevice formed by the verticalback and horizontal seat cushions.Smoldering resistance is measured by thefollowing criteria:1 Smoldering cannot exceed 45 minutes of
test duration2 Vertical char length cannot exceed 1.8
inches (45 mm)3 Mock-up specimen cannot transition into
open flame
Testing is completed in triplicate and allthree mock-up specimens must meet allthree criteria in order for the cover fabric topass the Section 1 test.
*Per the California Bureau of Electronic andAppliance Repair, Home Furnishings andThermal Insulation, and the Association ofContract Textiles, existing fabrics (prior toJanuary 1, 2015) that were tested under asimilar test method (ASTM, UFAC, or NFPA260) and passed can be used in uphol-stered furniture and are not subject toadditional testing.

Colorfastness is a fabric’s ability toretain color in various conditions.
Crocking refers to the rubbing off of colorfrom a fabric when subjected to abrasion.
To measure for colorfastness to crocking, the fabric to be tested is rubbed withsquares of white cotton fabric (both wet and dry) under controlled pressure for aspecified number of times. The amount ofcolor transferred to the white test squares ismatched to a control chart and a rating isestablished.

Colorfastness to light refers to afabric’s ability to resist fading when exposedto light.
To measure for colorfastness to light, thefabric to be tested is exposed under specificconditions to a controlled light source whichsimulates the sun's rays. At timed intervals, the test swatch is compared to a gray scaleand the degree of fading is rated.

Pilling is the formation of fuzzy balls onthe surface of a fabric. Pilling occurs whenloose fibers in the fabric are worked to thesurface after the fabric is subjected toabrasion.
The Brush Pill Test uses nylon bristles torub the surface of the fabric to be tested fora specific amount of time. The number ofballs or pills that form on the surface of thefabric are counted and the fabric isevaluated in a 1 to 5 rating system.
Class 5 = no pillingClass 1 = severe pilling
Breaking strength measures a fabric’sability to resist tearing or breaking whensubjected to tension.
To evaluate breaking strength, the fabric tobe tested is gripped by clamps at one endwhile weight is applied to pull it from theother end. This test is performed in both thewarp and the filling directions. The number of pounds required to cause thefabric to break or tear determines the rating.
Seam strength refers to the conditionwhen fabrics pull apart at a sewn seam.
To measure a fabric’s ability to resist seam slippage, a seam is sewn in the fabricto be tested. These sewn fabrics are thenclamped at one end and pulled by weightsat the other end. The test is performed in both the warp and filling directions. The weight is increased until the seamseparates a specified distance. The numberof pounds required to cause this separationdetermines the fabric's rating.
Adhesion of coating is the measure -ment of the force required to separate thecoatings from the substrate.
Tear strength is the measurement ofstress exerted to rip the fabric undertension.
Hydrolysis resistance is the evaluationof a polyurethane fabric's ability to withstandexposure to extended periods of heat andhumidity.
Passes: ASTM D4157 (ACT approved Cotton Duct#10 or wire screen)
Passes: 50,000 double rubs Wyzenbeek method
Abrasion resistance is the ability of afabric to withstand surface wear fromrubbing.
Wyzenbeek test method (modified)
The fabric to be tested is pulled taut andrubbed in both the warp and filling directionsusing a piece of cotton duck fabric as theabradant. The number of cycles, or doublerubs endured before the fabric shows“noticeable wear” is counted. This numberdetermines the fabric’s abrasion rating.

Paint brings color to metal surfaces andprovides them with a high-quality finish thatis fade and chip resistant.
• Accent paints allow you to add a flashof color to painted surfaces. This PriceGroup 3 pre-matched selection of trenddriven colors is available without thePerfectMatch registration fee. The palettewill be refreshed on a regular basis, butshould the color phase out of the program, customers can continue using thesefinishes without being charged a regis-tration fee. Accent paints have a glosslevel of 40%.
Plastics are used for many product parts, ranging from seating shells and table edgesto grommets and wire managers.
• Signature plastics allow customers tocreate space solutions that are consistentwith their own brand. These plastic colorchoices are available on select seatingproduct lines and were developed tomatch some of the most commonly usedcolors in university and corporate logos.
Textiles feature seating upholstery andvertical surface fabrics in a wide range ofdesigns, colors, and prices.
• Woven/Knit textiles are flexiblematerials consisting of a network of inter-lacing natural or artificial fibers.
• Leather/Coated materials are fabric-like materials made of fiber that arebonded together by chemical, mechanical, heat, or solvent treatment.
Wood veneers are slices of hardwoodmaterial applied to worksurfaces, storageunits, and panel skins that provide beautifulcharacter and depth from naturally occurringgrain patterns.
• Composite veneers are an engineeredveneer intended to create consistent grainpatterns and characteristics.
Note: Known for their color consistency, composite veneers feature a clear coatfinish applied in the finishing process.Because the veneers are sourced in largelots, overall color within a specific purchaseorder should have minimal color inconsis-tency. However, composite customersshould know that colors may vary slightlyfrom dye lot to dye lot. This inconsistencymay be noticed when replacement piecesare ordered that may be from different dyelots, or when a new project phase isinstalled. Also note that composite veneerstend to fade and lighten overtime, especiallywith sun exposure.

Most textile companies will swatch theirfabrics in a warp vertical (woven way, downroll) direction. Some exceptions might bemade to address patterns especially withstripes. Typically, when a fabric is swatchedin a warp horizontal (railroad or across roll)direction, the direction is noted on theswatch card or fabric sample. If in doubt ofa fabric direction, we encourage you tocontact the textile vendor for clarification.
SEATING:
• Dealers must specify fabricapplication direction on all COMorders.
• COMs for seating are most often appliedin the warp vertical (woven way, downroll)direction. Some exceptions includepatterns with stripes, fabrics that aresampled in the warp horizontal (railroad, across roll) direction, and solid vinyls.Helpful hint: COM vinyl requires uphol-stering in the warp horizontal applicationdirection.cSee page 113, Fabric Application

• Use Customiz Stain finish number to placeyour order.
Customiz Stain Notes
Color match from the sample submitted tothe actual production will be within commer-cially accepted tolerances. Wood is anatural material, and variations will occur incolor, grain, and texture. Many woodproducts have a tendency to darken withage and exposure to UV light. However, composite veneers will fade over time whenexposed to sunlight as the dye stains andpigmented glues, used to create thecomposite's unique patterns and colors, lighten over time. This is a natural process, just as natural veneers usually darken overtime. Finished pieces may vary slightly fromthe strike-off, and no guarantee can bemade of exact match.
Composite veneers, known for consistencyin color and pattern, are made from lowerdensity hardwoods than most naturalveneers, making them more prone todenting; however, they will still provideyears of useful life. Composite veneers, justlike paints and fabrics are produced in dyelots, resulting in potential variation betweendye lots within an accepted range. Becauseof this, some color and/or grain differencesmay exist between customer orders placedat different times.
Customiz Stain colors are formulated tomaintain lighting compatibility using aMacBeth Spectralight III. Particular careshould be taken if high-intensity dischargelight is used in the installation because itcan give the appearance of a mismatchbetween sample and strike-off.
Customiz stain takes 10 days to formulate.
Custom veneers are also available andmust be quoted by the Steelcase specialsgroup. Customiz stain on custom veneertakes two to four weeks to formulate.
Environmental restrictions may precludeSteelcase from matching or manufacturingcertain colors.

The cutting method determines theveneer’s figure or grain pattern.
Flat cut Veneer is cut parallel to the flat side ofthe cant at a tangent to the growth ringsof the tree. This produces a cathedralor oval pattern.
Quarter cut Veneer is cut from quarter sections ofthe log, produced by cutting each cantin half. Cutting lines are at an approx-imate 90° angle to the growth rings at thecenter of the quarter. This produces astraight grain or ribbon pattern.
Rift cut This veneer cut is used specifically foroak, to minimize the appearance offlaking patterns in the grain. Cuttinglines are on an arc approximatelyperpendicular to the growth rings. Thisproduces a comb-like straight grain orribbon pattern.

What is the issue? Some textiles are simple and look the same regardless of how you apply them toa product. Many other fabrics are patterned, textured, or have luster that will have adistinctly different appearance if applied indifferent directions on chairs or panels.Because of these differences, and the factthat there are limits to how some fabricscan be applied to Steelcase products, it isimportant to understand fabric applicationdirection standards at Steelcase in order toavoid being disappointed.
Talking about directionFabrics come on rolls. The long yarns thatrun down the length of the roll are called the “warp” yarns. These yarns are used todefine the direction you are viewing thefabric as it is applied to a panel or chair.Fabric directionality is determined by howthe fabric comes off the roll. It is NOT deter-mined by the way the pattern looks on theproduct (i.e., horizontal stripes do not meanthe fabric was applied warp horizontal —itcould have been applied warp vertical).
In the example below, the fabric is appliedwarp horizontal although the stripes appearvertical.
Warp horizontal application is thestandard application direction for mostSteelcase fabrics on Steelcase panel andseating products. Horizontal applicationmeans that as you view the panel or chair inits upright position, the warp yarns of thefabric are running in the horizontal direction.cSee page 116, Fabric Application Directionfor Systems, Casegoods, and Architecturematrix, for details on these exceptions.

Warp vertical application is the standardapplication direction for any panels tallerthan 68"H and a few other exceptions.Vertical application means that as you viewthe panel or chair in its upright position, thewarp yarns are running in the verticaldirection.cSee page 116, Fabric Application Directionfor Systems, Casegoods, and Architecturematrix, for details on these exceptions.
Fabric on panels taller than 68"Hcannot be applied warp hor izontal becausethe height of the product is greater than thewidth of the fabric.
Fabric on panels wider than 68"Wcannot be applied warp vertical becausethe width of the product is greater than thewidth of the fabric.

The combination of tall panels (75"Hwith warp vertical) with short panels (65"Hor less with warp horizontal) will result in the fabric patterns running in opposite directions.
To remedy this situa tion, thefollowing options are available:• Use non-directional fabric. Only a small selection of fabrics are non-directional.• Use fabrics that have standard warp vertical application direction.• Specify warp vertical application onfabrics that are standard warp horizontal.Tip: If you require warp vertical and it is notthe standard, you must specify the warpvertical option on every line in the order.
Railroaded means the same thing aswarp horizontal and is often used whentalking about chairs. Across roll is anotherterm for running the fabric in this direction.
Woven way means the same thing aswarp vertical and is often used when talkingabout chairs. Down roll is another term forrunning the fabric in this direction.

What determines fabric direction?Standard default directions exist for allproducts. You may specify a fabric to be cutin a specific direction if the product allows itto be applied. The purchase order mustclearly state the application direction if it is other than standard. Refer to the followingtables for the standard directions. Tip: If you are changing the applicationdirection of fabric, yardage requirementsmay increase resulting in an additionalupcharge. This upcharge will be applied tothe purchase order.
Structural panels, tackboards, andtiles have standard Steelcase verticalsurface fabrics applied warp vertical or warphorizontal, depending on the fabric. cSee page 113 for the standard directions.
Why do dealers have to specifyfabric application direction?Sometimes COM fabrics have patterns thatlook awkward or inappropriate if they areapplied in the standard direction. Therefore,it is critical to know how the pattern is runon the roll to ensure that Steelcase buildsand ships each order to the customer’sexpectation. Some examples are shownhere.

• Steelcase does not know which way yourcustomer wants to see these patterns ontheir furniture.
• Dealers must specify application directionon all COM orders.
Swatch directionsAll Steelcase fabric swatches and samplesare shown in the warp horizontal direction. Ifyou hold any fabric sample in the orientationshown below, the fabric will be in the warp-horizontal direction.
To see how a fabric will look if it is appliedwarp vertical, turn it 90°.
Note: Fabric direction on samples fromCOM vendors may vary by product. Mosttextile companies will swatch their fabrics ina warp vertical (woven way, down roll)direction. Some exceptions might be madeto address patterns especially with stripes.Typically, when a fabric is swatched in awarp horizontal (railroad or across roll)direction, the direction is noted on theswatch card or fabric sample. If in doubt ofa fabric direction, we encourage you tocontact the textile vendor for clarification.

The black and white label is on all standardupholstered seating. It means that the fabricand foam have been tested separately andsatisfy California Technical Bulletin117–2013. The fabric actually may have abetter flame retardance performance buthas not been submitted for testing beyondCal TB 117–2013. cSee page 74 for a complete description of this test.
The red label is on all FCS modified uphol-stered seating. It means that the chair hasbeen built and labeled to be in compliancewith the California Technical Bulletin 133(Cal TB 133). This is the highest flameretardance rating available on Steelcaseseating products.
Modifying Steelcase SeatingUpholstery to Meet Fire CodesSteelcase offers Fire Code Seating modifi-cation (FCS) on some seating models. Themost rigorous fire codes in the nation havebeen developed in California, and theSteelcase FCS modification is designed tomeet those codes.
Fire Code Seating (FCS) indicates that aproduct is constructed to meet the strict firecode requirements of high public occupancyareas such as theaters, meeting rooms, andlobbies.
The FCS standards will meet the State of California Technical Bulletin 133(Cal TB 133). Boston adopted the CaliforniaTechnical Bulletin TB 133 test standard in1992. cSee page 74 for a description of theCalifornia Technical Bulletin 133 tests.
Fire Code Seating with SteelcaseTextilesA wide variety of Steelcase Textiles are available for use on models with the FCSmodification. Some chair and fabric combi-nations will not pass the test criteria for FireCode Seating. Often, this is due to the chairconfiguration, large surface areas thatsupport combustion, and the fiber content of some fabrics.cSee page 121,Fire Code Seating Matrices, for availability and exceptions.
Fire Code LabelsThere are two different fire code labels. All upholstered Steelcase chairs have oneof these two labels in clear view (usually on the underside of the seat pan).
No additional leadtime is required for FCSmodification.
Fire Code LiabilitySteelcase assumes no liability for flameretardance if the customer modifies the FCS product. This includes any topicaltreatments or attachments applied to theproduct after it is manufactured.
Fire Code Letters
The following pages contain letters for bothCal TB 117–2013 and Cal TB 133. Theseletters can be photocopied and presented toa fire marshal to demonstrate fire codecompliance.cSee page 119 for Cal TB 117–2013 letter.cSee page 120 for Cal TB 133 letter.

FIRE CODE SEATING is the terminology adopted by Steelcase North America to identify productmanufactured to be in compliance with the requirements set forth by the State of California Department ofConsumer Affairs, Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation,Technical Bulletin 133 (Cal TB 133): Flammability Test for Seating Furniture for Use in Public Occupancies.
All Steelcase FIRE CODE SEATING uses interliner or protective barrier technology, whereby a separatelayer of flame-resistant barrier material is included just beneath the surface upholstery fabric. The inclusionof this barrier material creates a level of flame resistance sufficient to satisfy the requirements of Cal TB 133,which is the test protocol required by law for public occupancies in the State of California, as well as otherstates and municipalities.
As required by law, it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to label each item of seating furniture manufacturedto be in compliance with the requirements of Cal TB 133. Each unit of Steelcase FIRE CODE SEATING has ared label affixed to the underside of the product, as follows:

What are EstablishedSurface Materials?Established surface materials include popularhard surfaces and textiles from previousSteelcase surface materials programs. Thesesurface materials are available to customers thathave standardized on these finishes.
Finishes in the Established category may not beavailable across all materials or product lines. Please refer to the product specification guidesfor availability by product.
What are TransitionalSurface Materials? This Transitional section contains surface materi-als that are being maintained for existingcustomers only and are likely to be phasedout over time. It is expected that each of theseTransitional items will enter the existing deletionprocess when and if a decision is made to discontinue production. These surface materialsare indicated with a S. Surface materials thathave a specific culling date are indicated with anG, followed by the last order entry date. A list ofsurface materials identified for deletion isincluded on Product Info. See the “Culling ListWith Alternatives.” Product Info is an electronic collection of specification guides in Acrobat PDF(Portable Document Format). With Product Info, you can scan, search, and print any page on virtually any computer. You can access these files at the steelcase.com web site orvillage.steelcase.com. New customers orexisting customers with new projectsshould be selecting other surface materials.
The idea is to give you—our customers, design-ers, specifiers, and dealers—additional time toprepare for change. With this kind of advancenotice, we’ll be able to help you:– make smooth transitions to alternative selections – avoid selections that may be phased out over time– be more informed and confident about the long-term plans for our surface materials
With the exception ofoak, wood tops and tablebases in these transitionalfinishes use flat-cutveneers. Oak veneers areflat cut for tops and rift cutfor bases. If oak veneersare specified for both thetops and bases, the samewood finish will be appliedto both, resulting in match-ing wood color but not ingrain pattern.

Remove as much soil or staining materialas possible by carefully vacuuming, brushing, or scraping with a dull instrument.
Cleaning codes apply only to the outerpart of your fabric. Do not over-wet thefabric! If you do, you may damage theupholstery’s filling materials.Special finishes or laminations, such as aprotective coating (e.g., C-1TM) or a flame-retardant treatment, may modify a fabric’scleaning code due to the adhesive typeused in lamination (e.g., “WS” code maychange to “S” or “W” code).
W – Clean only with water-based shampooor foam upholstery cleaner. (Water-basedcleaning agents are often sold as upholsteryshampoo. They are usually sold as foams, concentrated liquids, and dry compounds.Do not over wet. Do not use dry cleaningsolvents. Pile fabric may require brushing torestore its appearance. Remove cushioncovers to launder.
S – Clean only with dry cleaning solvent.Do not saturate. Do not use water. Removecushion covers to launder.
WS – Clean with a mild detergentshampoo, foam, or dry cleaning solvents.Do not saturate with liquids. Pile fabric mayrequire brushing to restore its appearance.Remove cushion covers to launder.
X – Do not clean with either water orsolvent-based cleaner. Use only vacuumingor light brushing.
Cleaning Code WFollow these directions for removing water-borne, non-greasy soil or stains (suchas coffee, milk, soft drinks, fruit juices, washable ink, etc.):1 Gently apply a water-based cleaner, thatis specifically made for cleaning fabric, tothe soiled area using a clean cloth orsponge, such as an upholstery shampoo.2 Work the cleaner into a lather or foam, if possible, to minimize soaking the fabric.Using light brushing motions, work from theoutside of the soiled area toward the centerto prevent rings.3 Allow fabric to dry completely, thenvacuum thoroughly.
Cleaning Code SFollow these directions for removing oil-borne soil or stains (such as salad dressing, grease, lipstick, ball-point ink, etc.):1 Gently apply a dry-cleaning fluid to thesoiled area using a dampened, clean clothor soft-bristle brush.2 Using quick, light, rubbing or brushingstrokes, work from the outside of the soiledarea toward the center to prevent rings.Avoid soaking the fabric. 3 Gently blot with a clean, absorbent clothto soak up and remove dampened soil.4 Allow fabric to dry completely, thenvacuum thoroughly.
Large AreasWhen large fabric areas must be cleaned, such as complete panels, it is recommendedthat you employ a professional cleaning firmthat uses a dry-foam upholstery shampooand an immediate wet pick-up vacuumsystem, that does not exceed 170F.
Do not steam clean or use othermethods that soak or heat the fabric.
Regular and proper maintenance of yourupholstery fabric permits less frequentcleaning.
Maintenance is routine, on-going care whichreduces soil buildup on a fabric’s surface.Maintenance also includes treating spotsand stains promptly.
Vacuum regularly with a proper upholsteryattachment to remove air-borne dust andlint thoroughly.
Clean periodically to remove accumulatedgrime and retain the fabric’s originalappearance as much as possible.
Clean protective arm covers and head restsso they do not look different from the rest ofyour upholstery. Promptly treat spots andstains. (An International Fabricare studyconfirmed the detrimental effects of allowingstains to age, when they could have beensuccessfully removed, if treated immedi-ately. After one week, 20% of stains couldnot be removed. After 3 weeks, 50% ofstains could not be removed. If stain hasoxidized, or totally hardened, it forms aninsoluble product that cannot be removed).Turn and rotate loose cushions to equalizewear and soiling.
Vertical Surface Vinyl
Remove as much soil or staining material aspossible by carefully vacuuming, brushing,or scraping with a dull instrument. Uselukewarm water and mild soap to removemost soil and stains. Work up a thin latheron a clean, damp piece of cheese cloth andrub it gently over the soiled area. Wipe offthe soap with a fresh piece of cheese cloth.Finish by wiping with a soft, dry cloth. Neveruse furniture polishes, oils, solvents, alcohol, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, or ammoniawater on leather. Never use furniturepolishes, oils, solvents, varnishes, abrasivecleaners, or ammonia water on vinyl.Naphtha or mineral spirits may be used withcaution (they are flammable) to removechewing gum, grease, or other greasy soilsand stains that cannot be removed withsoap and water.
Fire Code Seating on Molded Foam
Because of the heat application used toadhere the fabric to the foam substrate, donot use steam in cleaning the Fire CodeSeating (FCS) fabric. This heat could meltthe adhesive and loosen the fabric.Use a dry-shampoo application that has a wet pick-up. A wet pick-up minimizesmoisture in the foam that may cause futuremildew or breakdown in the foam.
Care of Surface Materials
June 2015
Surface Materials Reference Manual cCare of Surface Materials, continued 131
Dusting with a clean, dry cloth is the recom-mended routine cleaning method for ananiline-dyed, full-grain leather. For spotsand spills, wipe excess liquid immediatelyand let air dry. If necessary, use lukewarmwater and mild non-detergent soap, workinto a thin lather with a soft cloth, rinse withclean water, and buff to restore luster. The use of any other product could causereactions with the solvent-free chemicalsused in the tanning process.
Part of leather’s unique appeal is thesophisticated aging process that occursover time. Soft, comfort wrinkles can appearupon use and are considered common.Comfort wrinkles are a normal characteristicof leather and are part of the naturalqualities and softness that leather provides.Leather has naturally occurring markingsfrom the everyday activities of an animal’slife and as a result, some of these markingscan show on an upholstered chair. Thesemarkings are what give each chair uniquecharacter and premium quality.
Polyurethane Upholstery
For regular maintenance, use lukewarmwater and mild soap to remove most soiland stain. Do not over-saturate the materialwith water.
For stubborn stains, remove as much soil orstaining from the material as possible bycarefully vacuuming or brushing with a dullinstrument. Lift most stains with an alcohol-based cleaner. Disinfect using 5:1water/bleach solution. Thoroughly rinse allcleaning solution residue with water and letair dry. To remove ballpoint pen, addressthe stain immediately by wiping withisopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Not allink stains can be removed.
Never use furniture polishes, oils, solvents, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, or solutions ofammonia and water on polyurethane.
Vinyl Upholstery
Remove as much soil or staining materialas possible by carefully vacuuming, brushing, or scraping with a dull instrument.Use lukewarm water and mild soap toremove most soil and stains. Work up a thinlather on a clean, damp piece of cheesecloth and rub it gently over the soiled area.Wipe off the soap with a fresh piece ofcheese cloth. Finish by wiping with a soft, dry cloth.
Never use furniture polishes, oils, solvents, alcohol, varnishes, abrasive cleaners, orammonia water on vinyl. Naphtha or mineralspirits may be used with caution (they areflammable) to remove chewing gum, grease, or other greasy soils and stains thatcannot be removed with soap and water.
Acrylic
Dust with a soft, damp cloth or chamois.Clean only with mild soap, detergent andwater, or Pledge. Do not use window-cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, grittycloths, leaded or ethyl gasolines, or strongsolvents such as alcohol, acetone, carbontetrachloride, etc. To remove tar, grease, paint, etc., use naphtha or kerosene. Rinsewell and dry with a soft, damp cloth orchamois. Polish acrylic by applying a thin, even coating of automobile paste wax witha soft cloth. Do not use a cleaner-waxcombination. Remove minor surfacescratches by waxing. Remove deeperscratches by sanding lightly with 400-grit,“wet or dry” sandpaper and buffing with aclean, muslin wheel dressed with a goodgrade of fine-grit buffing compound. A 1⁄4"electric drill with a 4" buffing wheel hassufficient RPMs. Buff lightly with a cleancotton flannel or jersey cloth.
Avoid aromatic solvents and abrasives.Acrylic is combustible, so observe fire and safety procedures appropriate forcompatible forms of wood. Do not expose to excessive heat or flame.
Markerboard Writing Surfaces
Use dry erase markers only. Remove dry-erase markings with a markerboard eraseror soft cloth as often as possible. Changeerasers, as they become dirty. Dirty eraserswill leave ink residue on the surface.
For daily cleaning, or as needed, use a dryerase cleaner, or a non-abrasive householdcleaner, such as glass cleaner. This may bedone with a soft cloth or sponge. Dry thesurface with a soft cloth prior to writing. Allmarkings should be removed weekly.
Caution:• Do not use permanent markers on marker-
board surfaces. In the event a permanentmarker is used, removal of markings maybe attempted by using dry erase cleaner,or by writing over the marking with a dryerase marker and erasing with a marker-board eraser or soft cloth.
• Do not use abrasive cleaners or solventtype cleaning solutions, such as Ketones(Acetone, MEK, etc.) lacquer thinner, nailpolish remover, etc. because they mayremove the finish from the markerboardsurface.
For all laminate tops, painted and plated metals, and plasticsWiping with a damp cloth will removegeneral soiling and water-borne stains. Ifneeded, use a hard-surface, all purposecleaner such as Formula 409, Fantastic,Top Job, Mr. Clean, etc. Follow themanufacturer’s instructions for generalpurpose cleaning. To prevent staining, inkshould be removed as soon as possible. Donot use paint thinners, naphtha, or solvent-based fluids. To fill scratches in woodgrainlaminate tops, use an oak, walnut, ormahogany putty stick which can bepurchased at paint supply and hardwarestores.
Clean metal finishes with a non-abrasivecleaner. Apply the cleaner sparingly, makingsure that it does not come into contact withany wood surface. Wipe the hardware drywith a clean, soft cloth.
Protecting Wood SurfacesUse desk pads and coasters to help protectthe finish against dents, scratches, moistureand hot and cold liquids. Do not use deskpads that have plastic backing. Use felt orleather pads on the bottoms of officeequipment and accessories. Periodicallymove desk accessories and other objectskept on the worksurface to ensure evenaging. Lift objects when you move them, instead of pulling or pushing them acrossthe surface, to avoid scratching the surface.Avoid leaving vinyl binders on worksurfacefor long periods. If you use a protectiveglass top, insert felt pads between the glassand the worksur face, to create an air spaceand allow the wood to breathe. Keep yourfurniture away from direct sunlight. Avoidextreme temperatures and humidity.Maintain temperatures between 60 and 80degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levelsbetween 30 and 50 percent.
Cleaning Wood SurfacesKeep a supply of soft, clean, absorbentcloths handy for wiping up spills and regulardusting. To dust, wipe with a slightly damp, soft cloth, using another soft cloth to dry.Always wipe the surface in the direction ofthe woodgrain. Use a quality cleaner or flaxsoap formulated especially for use on woodsurfaces. Do not use oils or ammonia.Dilute the cleaner as directed by themanufacturer. Dampen but do not saturatea soft cloth with the diluted cleaningsolution. Wipe the surface in the directionof the woodgrain to remove dirt and finger-prints. Wipe the surface clean with a soft, dry cloth. Quality spray wax may be appliedsparingly twice a year. Excessive waxingmay result in a wax build-up which feelssticky and attracts an unusual amount ofdirt. For information about how to removethis wax, contact your facilities departmentor Steelcase dealer. Wood is a “forgiving”material which can usually be repaired. Ifyour worksurface is damaged, call yourfacilities department or Steelcase dealer.

Laminates canbe applied to several surfaces in the officeenvironment.LightfastnessThe ability of a color to remain true andunfaded after exposure to light. MemoA 7" x 8" surface material textile sample. Natural veneerVeneer that comes directly from theunprocessed log. Grain patterns are theresult of natural tree growth.PaletteA given range or a set of colors developedfor a specific purpose.PatternA design that is woven into the structure ofthe textile or applied after weaving bydyeing or printing. Pattern repeatThe measurement, in length and width, of asingle unit of a repeating pattern.PerfectMatch A program that allows the customer tocreate a custom paint color for Steelcaseproducts. cPage 99

Piece dyeThe process used to dye fabric after it iswoven. PillingA form of textile wear in which abradedfibers roll up and appear as small balls onthe surface of the textile. Plain weaveA textile produced using the simplest weaveformation. A one up one down warp andfilling weave arrangement creates a verysimple, plain fabric. Price groupAll Steelcase fabrics are arranged in pricegroups. They range from price group onethrough price group ten. Price group one isthe least expensive and price group ten themost. The price group of a fabric is basedon the cost to manufacture it. Quarter cutA veneer cutting technique that produces astraight grain pattern.Railroaded Pattern CuttingWhen the roll of fabric is horizontal forcutting, with selvages at the top and bottom. If you think of railroad tracks, theselvages represent the long rails, andthe ties represent the width of the fabric.Rift cutA veneer cutting technique that produces acomb-like straight grain pattern.Seating upholstery, seatingtextiles, and seating fabricsTextiles and other materials that are appro-priate for use on seating, including bothwoven and non-woven (leather and vinyl)upholstery.Soil retardant treatmentA coating or other treatment applied to afabric to improve soil and stain resistance. cPage 133Solid laminateLaminate that is a single color without a pattern.Speckle laminateLaminates with a subtle, random patternmade up of tiny dots of color in varyingcolor values.StrengthThe ability of a textile or yarn to withstandstress without breaking. Surface materialAny material that can be specified for appli-cation to Steelcase products in order toachieve an aesthetic effect. Steelcasesurface materials include paint, laminate, wood, vertical surface fabrics, seating
upholstery, systems plastics, seatingplastics, seating coating, metals, and otherfinishes. Surface Materials Binder SetBinders containing surface material specifi-cation tools. The set includes the HardSurfaces, Steelcase Textiles VerticalSurface Fabrics, and Steelcase TextilesSeating upholstery Binders.SwatchA sample of a surface material that is usedas a specification tool and/or on presen-tation boards.TaberA test that establishes whether textiles meetor exceed industry standards for wear. TheTaber Abrasion test is used for both seatingupholstery fabrics and vertical surfacefabrics. The test measurement is given incycles, which indicate how many abrasiverevolutions can be applied to the fabricbefore the first yarn bundles, or fibers, beginto break. Steelcase fabrics are tested withboth the Taber test and the Wyzenbeektest to meet all industry standards. cPage 72TextileA material that can be used as seatingupholstery or for vertical surface applica-tions. In the Steelcase Surface MaterialsProgram the words textile and fabric areused interchangeably.
3" x 3" sampleA three inch square sample of a hardsurface material that can be used for speci-fication or on presentation boards.Transitional category Transitional surface materials are beingmaintained for existing customers and are likely to be phased out over time. TweedA woven textile characterized by mixedcolors and a textured surface caused by thenovelty yarns used to make tweed fabrics.
TwillA woven textile with a distinct diagonalpattern. Ultraviolet (UV) stabilityThe fade-resistance of a textile or finish. ValueThe relative lightness or darkness of a color.VeneerA thin layer of fine wood that is used as the outer surface material to achieve awood effect. Vertical surface fabricA fabric suitable for use on furniture panelsand other vertical surfaces, such astackboards. WarpThe vertical threads of a woven fabric.WeavingThe process of making textiles using aloom. Filling (horizontal) threads are runover and under warp (vertical) threads tomake a length of woven textile. Patternscan be created by using the yarns indifferent sequences. WeightMeasurement of textile weight is given inounces per linear yard and represents theweight of one linear yard of fabricexpressed in ounces. Woodgrain laminatesLaminates that duplicate the colors andpatterns of wood veneer.
WoolenYarns characterized by bulkiness andsoftness, created by spinning fibers togetherusing the woolen spinning system.
WorstedYarns characterized by smooth surfacesand luster, created by spinning togetherlong fibers using the worsted spinningsystem.
WyzenbeekA test that establishes whether textiles meetor exceed industry standards for wear. TheWyzenbeek Abrasion test is primarily forseating upholstery fabrics, but it can also beused to test vertical surface fabrics. The testmeasurement is given in double rubs, whichindicate how many abrasions can be appliedto the fabric before it begins to show loosethreads or other signs of obvious wear.Steelcase fabrics are tested with both thismethod and the Taber Abrasion test, tomeet all industry standards. cPage 73YarnFibers twisted (plied) into a single, continuous thread. Yarn dyeingThe dyeing of yarns before weaving, whichmakes it possible to create multicoloredtextiles.
